RAIN SEMESTER 300 Level
Maternal and Child Health Nursing/ Family Planning I (NSC310) 3C units
Course Description:
This course is designed to help the students develop and understand the health of the family
during its childbearing and childrearing years, emphasizing the needs of mother and the newborn
during the maternal cycle, as well as the role of the nurse in family planning and genetic
counseling. It also deals with history of midwifery (national and international), application of the
nine tenets of P.H.C. Child welfare and school health programmes

Objectives: - At the end of this course, the student is expected to:


1. Demonstrate an understanding of basic concept and terminologies in maternal and child
health nursing in relation to pregnancy, labour, puerperium
2. Discuss the history of midwifery
3. Identify and discuss problems facing midwifery education and practice
4. Review anatomy and physiology of related systems
5. Explain the physiological and psychological changes in pregnancy
6. Advise women on preconception measures to prepare for healthy pregnancy
7. Discuss the role of the nurse in family planning and genetic counseling
COURSE OUTLINE
Unit 1: Introduction to material and child health nursing
 Basic concept and definition of terms in midwifery
 Nature of maternal and child health nursing.[MCH]
 History and ethics of midwifery
 Role of national and international organization in MCH
 Problem of MCH services in Nigeria
Unit 2: Review of Anatomy and Physiology of Female and Male Reproductive Organs.
 Bony pelvis
 Internal structure [Uterus, cervix, Fallopian tubes and ovaries].
 External genitalia [Vulva.]
 Breast.
 External organs [Penis and scrotum].
 Internal organs [Testis, excretory ducts].
 Spermatogenesis
Unit 3: Prenatal care
 Concept of prenatal care and focused antenatal care
 Diagnosis of pregnancy (Presumptive, Probable, Positive signs)
 Physiological changes in various systems in the body during pregnancy e.g reproductive
system, cardiovascular,respiratory,uninary,integumentary,muscular-skeletal system etc

Unit 4: Introduction to family planning
 Concept in family planning
 Benefits of family planning
 History of family planning (national and international)
 Various factors that affects clients acceptance of family planning ( socio-economic,
religious beliefs, cultural factors, myth and misconceptions)
 Counselling in family planning
 Data Collection for family planning clients (history taking, physical examinations,
laboratory investigations)
 Traditional and modern methods of family planning
 Physiology of menstrual cycle
 Natural family planning methods ( Billing’s method, basal body temperature, calendar
method, symto-thermal)
Unit 5: Available Child Health Services
 Child health clinic
 National programme on immunization
 Control of diarrhoeal diseases (oral rehydration therapy)
 School health Service

IMPLEMENTATION
Length of Course: 4 hours lecture a week (12 weeks x4 hours= 46 Hours)
Method of Teaching: The methods of instruction will include
1. Formal lecture
1. Group discussion
2. Demonstration
3. written assignments
4. simulations and supervised practice,
5. Tutorial
METHOD OF EVALUATION
Formative: 30% continuous assessment which may take the form of class tests, term paper, and
assignments
Summative: 70% of 3hours written examination at the end of the course
Minimum pass mark is 50% of cumulative of CA and final assessment
75% class attendance is compulsory to unite the final assessment in this course
