Analyzed and researched by Mary Bleseiur Sevilla

EVENT:
When Noli Me Tangere was written by Jose Rizal and was successfully
published in 1887.

Relevance
Noli Me Tangere that was written by Jose Rizal played a crucial role and is vital in the political
history of the Philippines. It was relevant to the people at that time and still even in present
times. Whereas this book is regarded as romantic, its nature and character makes it more
socio-historical. The majority of the subjects and issues covered in this novel are still present in
contemporary. During the time of Jose Rizal, Spaniards looked down on Filipinos and they were
snatched with freedom. Aside from this, graft and corruption were present until today. Jose
Rizal’s aim was to defend fellow Filipinos from accusations made by foreigners, pointing out
Filipinos having lack of knowledge and idiocy. Additionally, he wants to show how the Filipino
people lived during the Spanish colonial period, including the cries, abuse and cruelties. Because
of this, it results in Filipino nationalism, which leads to the Philippine Revolution of 1896. Noli
Me Tangere not only awoke dormant Filipino awareness, but it also paved the way to
independence. At present time, some foreigners still look down on the competencies of Filipinos
and sometimes regarded as slave of foreigner employees. Regarding the government issue, graft
and corruption are almost transparent to the eyes of Filipinos but it seems like they have no idea
and are turning blind eye to it. That is why, Noli Me Tangere is still relevant today and that
Filipinos should read this novel again in order to open their eyes to see the truth and reality.

Resonance
When Noli Me Tangere was published, the majority who read the book were affected. These are;
fellow Filipinos who were awakened by the truth and reality, Spanish authorities who felt
insulted, provoked and regarded the book as subversive and anti-government, Catholic leaders
who treat the novel as heretical. Students who read the book were also affected because they
learned the truth behind the history and what can be prevented in the present and future times.
The importance of the event is that fellow Filipinos then and now were convinced and pushed to
fight freedom, democracy and false government with no physical revenge and use of abuse.
Thus, Jose Rizal and his novel taught fellow Filipinos to use our knowledge and voice through
education.
Remarkable
Because of the event, it was now attached to the mind and hearts of the majority then and now. It
is considered as the turning point that at last, the majority now know the truth and have the urge
to fight for everyone's democracy.

Remembered
The event was embarked on the hearts and minds of writers, activists, present political officials,
students and especially fellow Filipinos. For the record, Emilio Aguinaldo recognized the
greatness of Jose Rizal and his novel. He included the name of Jose Rizal in his speech during
the declaration of independence on June 12, 1898. C. He issued his first proclamation declaring
December 30 as Rizal Day and ordered for the half mast of the Filipino flag from 12:00 noon on
December 29 until 12:00 noon of December. Senator Leila de Lima in 2019, urged Filipinos to
continue valuing the national hero’s principles by calling out and speaking out against abusive
leaders who promote and tolerate inequality, injustices, and treason.

Revealing
Noli Me Tangere acted as the eye opener of the majority from the darkness of lies and abuse. It
reveals the dark side of the past during the time of Jose Rizal and the dark side of the past is still
occurring at present.

Resulting in change
It has consequences for the future, the consequences might be good or bad. If the objective of the
novel was applied and understood by the majority, then there will be good consequences such as
unity, good governance, developed country etc.

Durability
Because of the event, fellow Filipinos have been affected then and now. When the novel was
published, it took many years before the 1896 Philippine Revolution. Even though the novel was
published a long time ago, this event and novel will still live forever in the hearts and minds of
Filipinos. That is why many good political officials still mention how great the novel is to
Filipino citizens.

Quantity
According to a legitimate online source, the book indirectly influenced the Philippine Revolution
of independence from Spain which was also the plan of Andres Bonifacio that time, along with
Rizal, they advocated direct representation to the Spanish government and an overall larger role
for the Philippines within Spain's political affairs. The citizens of the Philippines and some
Spanish officials were affected by the event.
Profundity
There was a deep effect on the affected people. Back then, poor Filipinos had no right to study,
especially the English language due to the social status that only patriarchs have the right to
access education. After the novel was spread, unity and equality were applied for everyone thus
having an access to education is visibly present. Fellow Filipinos already have no fear of
speaking up about what is right because of democracy.
