PAPER 2

Del Pilar, Lopez-Jaena, and Rizal have overlapping views about colonial society.
Yet, there are also major differences in their arguments. WHICH AMONG THE
THREE DO YOU AGREE WITH THE MOST?

The lives of Filipinos during the Spanish era were difficult since the Spaniards ruled
the Philippines, denying every Filipino citizen independence and justice. I understand
why the Filipinos desired reforms in the Philippines at the time. The Ilustrados were a
well-educated class during the Spanish colonization period in the late 1800s. They are
members of the Spanish middle class, having grown up in Spain and been exposed to
the liberal principles of the country. They are known as Ilustrados because they possess
the knowledge and explicitness of liberalism and nationalism thought.

The Ilustrados of the Spanish period in the Philippines occupy an important role in
society. By authoring books, articles, methods, and spiritual beliefs, as well as on
cultural topics just before to Spanish conquest, the Ilustrados expressed their
dissatisfaction with their portrayal of those Spaniards as uncivilized, as well as their
aggression against any sort of culture. Graciano Lopez Jaena, Marcelo H. Del Pilar, and
Jose Rizal are among the most well-known Ilustrados. These Ilustrados were
forerunners in the Propaganda Movement; their writings neither encouraged nor
inspired the Filipinos to revolt. The concept of oneness as well as individual
identification was principally addressed through them.

According to Graciano Lopez Jaena, the Philippines' backwardness might be

ascribed to the government's preference for repression over stimulation. Governors in
general spent their time putting down rebellions in response to every small attempt of
the native population to throw off the Spaniards' burden. Given this "deplorable state,"
he suggested reversing the repressive approach, which was founded on the erroneous
belief that it would render Filipinos subservient and loyal to Spain. According to Jaena,
the Filipinos' seclusion is robbing them of their ability to think and act independently.

1
The objective is to give Filipinos’ freedom of speech and press, as well as freedom of
assembly and trade. Natural rights will be granted to Filipinos in this manner, instilling
submissiveness and allegiance to Spain. Lopez is advocating for what he sees as
Filipinos' natural rights as Filipinos, rather than those that may be granted to them as
Spanish subjects.

On the other hand, Marcelo H. Del Pilar was convinced, based on personal
experience, that the main impediment to Philippine progress was the Spanish regular
clergy, who used their power in the towns and access to the colonial government's high
councils to prevent liberal reforms from being implemented. He saw no other option for
removing this stumbling block except to evict the friars from the colony entirely. He has
continuously campaigned for this measure. Apart from that, Del Pilar believed that
Filipinos should endeavor to improve their situation by peaceful methods rather than
through violence.

The prehispanic condition of the Indios was the first epoch of Spain's historical
perspective in the Philippines, followed by the arrival of Spain and the spread of its
civilizing influences as the second. Dr. Jose Rizal, an educated indio or mestizo, cannot
accept this perspective of history. As a result, they created a tripartite or three-part
perspective of Philippine history. Dr. Jose Rizal was known for having the most
thorough tripartite view of Philippine history, and from my standpoint, I think I do agree
Jose Rizal’s view the most. The third epoch of the tripartite in Philippine history,
according to him, is one of nationhood, of nationality emerging from ethnic variety. The
second epoch (colonial period) of Rizal's life was not one in which Spain carried out a
"civilizing" purpose. It was a time of deterioration for Filipinos. Dr. Jose Rizal's goal is to
expose the ills of colonial control and propose a solution for future horrors, as well as to
reject colonialists' depictions of Filipino history and provide a different perspective. Rizal
desires a nationalist vision of history in order to educate the populace and foster
patriotism. As a result, he was able to anticipate the inevitability of national
independence and encourage the growth of national consciousness.

On a final note, even though the three Ilustrados have their different views and
arguments about colonial society, never forget that the these have had a huge influence

in our country. Without their assistance and knowledge, the Philippines would remain a
colony. Their political beliefs were revealed to be an analysis and a tool for change.
Because these Ilustrados believed that writing was more effective than violence, their
compositions reawakened Philippine nationalism. They believed that the greatest way to
gain freedom was to avoid using violence. Their words sparked the Philippine revolution
because they served as a wake-up call to us, Filipinos, to struggle for our freedom and
recognize our own identity. They put their intelligence and brilliance to good use. They
had given their lives for the independence of our nation and the unity of all Filipinos.
They have taught us that education is the key to our prosperity and to escaping the
enslavement of ignorance. Their principles will guide us in all facets of life. Recalling
their principles helped me realize how I could emulate them in a way that would benefit
the world. Because we may be able to explain societal change not only by analyzing our
history, but also by evaluating the history and lessons therein, history is a great tool for
bringing peace and progress. A HERO REFLECTS A SOCIETY EXCEPTION.
