1.

Tell us what higher education means to you

Higher education means stepping forward and challenge ourselves to make a change in today’s world.
We currently face issues in different fields and contexts that require everybody’s attention; therefore,
by participating in a higher education program we empower ourselves with the tools and knowledge that
will help us become the leaders of our communities. University has encouraged me to leave my comfort
zone, question my environment, critique, analyze and be more knowledgeable about my area of study.
Not only that, but also become aware of the impact that being a good professional has in our society. I
strongly believe that the world needs more people who are critical and have the fundamental basis to
take their passion and knowledge to the next level, and that is what higher education provides. It is also
an opportunity to dive deep into what truly inspires us and combine all that drive with discipline,
initiative and responsibility. As a post graduate student, I can ensure that deciding to attend college has
been the best decision I have ever made in my life. It has opened my eyes to the big responsibility we all
have as citizens to devote our time, effort, expertise and talent in order to make this world a little better
than it was before we arrived.

2. Tell us how you overcome challenges to reach a goal

As human beings, we are always facing new scenarios and circumstances that require ourselves to find
solutions and be able to make quick decisions. Personally, I’ve encountered many challenges along my
life which have made me the person that I am today. Firstly, I like to look at everything face to face, that
means not hiding or avoiding the difficult situations I may have in front of me. When I have analyzed the
issue, I think about ways to solve it and what might or might not go well. I plan different strategies and
steps that could help me succeed, but in case it does not work out at the beginning, I never give up and
try until I finally accomplish my goal. For instance, I’d always dreamed about studying abroad but of
course things do not always go as planned. I failed my IELTS test on my first try and at first I thought I
was not going to be able to be accepted by an Australian University. However, I designed a plan, I enrolled
in a preparation course and never stopped listening or reading in English. I worked hard every day in
order to achieve the goal that was so important to me. After many months, I took the test again and
finally passed it with the required score. This is one of the many times that I’ve stopped and thought that
with hard work, motivation, good attitude and discipline everything is possible.

3. Describe a time when you had to take initiative

There have been many times in which I’ve taken initiative in my life. I consider myself as a person who
doesn’t like to sit and wait for things to be done, as we have to be proactive and make things happen.
For instance, when the pandemic started, a lot of things changed and everybody was affected in different
ways. My 10-year-old brother started to show signs of anxiety and depression because he couldn’t
socialize with his friends anymore and he didn’t like his online classes. That’s when I decided to do
something in order to help the kids overcome this difficult time. I organized online sessions so that
everybody could join in a free non-academic context. I invited my brother’s friends to join and I was the
leader of each session. I provided them with games in which they had to go around the house and look
for something and whoever found it first was the winner. We sang, danced, played charades among
other fun activities. Little by little more kids started to join and my brother almost forgot he was in the
middle of a pandemic. Our sessions were held every day in the afternoons and the children’s parents
were thankful about this non-profit initiative. It was the most rewarding thing I have ever done as well
since I feel that I contributed in the children’s wellbeing somehow. I strongly believe that whenever it is
possible we have to take the initiative to do things that contribute our community without thinking about
our own benefit and what we gain from it.
