Introduction
Hello learners! Welcome to the exciting world of Science.

This module is designed for you to make your home-based learning, interesting and
meaningful as we care for your safety and well-being.

In this lesson, you should learn how the internal organs work together as one and why
is it important to know the parts and functions of each internal organ of the human body.

Have fun and enjoy learning Science!

“Be honest, even if others are not, even if others will not, even if
others cannot” – St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Content Standard:

 The learners demonstrate understanding on how the major internal

organs such as the brain, heart, lungs, liver, stomach, intestines,
kidneys, bones, and muscles keep the body healthy

Performance Standard:

 The learners should be able construct a prototype model of organism

that has body parts which can survive in a given environment

Most Essential Learning Competencies:

 S4LT -IIa - b - 1 : Describe the main function of the major

organs

Formation Standards:

 Active to discover something new

Learning Materials:

 The New Science Links ( Worktext in Science and Technology Revised Edition))

(The Stomach and The Intestines)

Day 1
I. What to Learn

Today, you will learn about…

 The stomach and Intestines (small and large)

II. What to do

You will:

 Identify functions of the stomach and intestines

 Identify the parts of the stomach

Let’s Begin

Good day! Today we will discuss about the stomach and the intestines.
To begin with, let us watch a short video about how your digestive system
works by TED-Ed. Here is the link below:
https://youtube.com/Og5xAdC8EUI

Note: Parents, please guide your child in doing the activity.

What’s New
The Stomach
 It is an elastic, large, muscular, pear-
shaped, and multi-chambered organ
located crosswise in the abdominal cavity
beneath the diaphragm.

 Its main function is for the digestion of

food.

3 IMPORTANT JOBS OF THE STOMACH

1. To store the food you have eaten

2. To break down the food in to a liquidly mixture
3. To slowly empty that liquidly mixture into the small intestine

How the stomach works?

 It produces gastric juices containing the enzymes that break down the
food.
 The stomach churms. The churning action mixes the food, and changing
it into a thick liquid called chyme.
 Peristalsis is the movement produced when muscles of the digestive
tract relax and contract in the digestive tract. It begins in the esophagus,
and continues down the stomach and the intestines. The stomach
secrets hydrochloric acid and enzymes called pepsin.

Let’s Try It
Let’s watch a video on how the stomach digests food. After you watch
the video, answer the following questions below. Here is the link from
Npmmscience.

Note: Parents, please guide your child in doing the activity.

What you have Found Out?

1. What happened to the food after some time?

Day 2

I. What to Learn

Today, you will learn about…

 The Intestines (small and large)

II. What to do

You will:

 Identify the functions of small and large intestines

Let’s Begin

Good day! Today we will discuss about the small and large intestines. To
begin with, let us watch a short clip about the Intestines by MagicBox
Animation. Here is the link:

https://youtube.com/nXB3YH7aTEs

Note: Parents, please guide your child in doing the activity.

What’s New

The Intestines

 It is the long muscular tube

that extends from the lower
end of your stomach up to
your rectum

 This is also called the bowel

or bowels.

 It is divided into 2 sections (small and large intestines)
Small Intestine
 It is an organ made up of three segments. It is formed through a passage
from your stomach going to your large intestine.
 The opening between stomach and the intestine is called pylorus.

Three segments of the small intestine:

1. Duodenum
2. Jejunum
3. Ileum
Please turn your book on pages 98

Large Intestine

 It measures abour 1.5 meters (5feet) long.

 It is much broader than the small intestine.
 Its main function is to absorb water and salts from the material that has
not been digest as food.
 It also helps get rid of any waste products left. Most of digestion and
absorption have already taken place by the time the food is mixed with
digestive juices as it reaches the large intestine.

The large intestine is composed of the following parts:

1. Cecum
2. Colon
Please turn your book on pages 99

Let’s Try It
Let’s have an activity. Turn your book on pages 100. and let’s start
performing Activity 3.6 entitled ‘Round Trip to the Intestines”. Follow
strictly the procedures written on the said page. Then, answer
questions under ‘What have you found out’. Lastly, you have to write
your conclusion. Write all your answers in a short bond paper.

disease?

Dominican Value/s Learned

Every part of our body is created by God. He created it with much love
and care. As children of God, we need to take care of it and use it well
accordingly.
After learning the lesson of Major Internal Organs of the body (stomach
and intestines), what important values have you learned from this lesson that
you think will help you become a better child of God?

As a Dominican pupil, I learned to be_________________________
