By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:
4.1.1 Explain and evaluate i) visual, ii) read, iii) heard information by identifying which final
paragraph answers the task question and summarises the writer’s opinion and answering 3 questions
LEARNING OBJECTIVES about the essay in Activity 3.
2.1.4 Explain and justify the point of view of classmates or others by justifying with 1 reason
the 3 stated opinions in Activity 1 and justifying their opinions about illegal downloading of music
with at least 1 reason.
What I’m looking for (WILF)
1. Pupils can identify which final paragraph answers the task question and summarises the writer’s
opinion.
SUCCESS CRITERIA 2. Pupils can answer 3 questions about the essay in Activity 3.
3. Pupils can justify with 1 reason the 3 stated opinions in Activity 1.
4. Pupils can justify their opinions about illegal downloading of music with at least 1 reason.

ACTIVITIES
1. Pupils work in pairs and decide what information should come in the final paragraph of a bias
argument (i.e. an argument giving one point of view as opposed to a balanced argument giving both

sides of an argument).
2. A few pairs share their discussion with the class.
LESSON DEVELOPMENT 3. Pupils turn to page 78 English Download and read the information on essays and writing good
conclusions.
4. Pupils read the instructions, the 3 words in the orange box and 3 summaries in Activity 1.
5. Pupils complete the 3 summaries with the words in the orange box.
6. Pupils compare answers in pairs before discussing as a class.
7. Pupils remain with their partners to discuss the 3 stated opinions in Activity 1 and justify them. with
at least 1 reason for each opinion. (Complementary Skill)
8. Pupils read the instructions, statement and the writing task in Activity 2.
9. Pupils circle the correct words to complete the statement in Activity 2.
10. Pupils think whether they think it is a good or bad thing for the music industry and later justify their
opinions with at least 1 reason to a partner using the notes given. (Complementary Skill)
11. Pupils remain with their partners to think of 1 additional idea to be added to the notes.
12. Pupils read the information in Download box, and later one pupil is chosen to explain the tip in his or
her own words.
13. Pupils read the Language Bank and also the essay and the 2 final paragraphs in Activity 3.
14. Pupils identify the writer’s opinion in the introduction and in the 3 main paragraphs and later
compare them to see which conclusion is closer to the opinion expressed in the essay.
15. Pupils identify which final paragraph answers the task question in Activity 2 and also summarises the
writer’s opinion. (Main Skill)
16. Pupils check their answers in pairs before discussing as a class.
17. Pupils read the instructions and 3 questions in Activity 4.
18. Pupils answer 3 questions about the essay in Activity 3.(Main Skill)
19. Pupils check their answers in pairs before checking as a class.
Differentiated Actvities:
Less proficient pupils: Group them together with more proficient pupils during the activities

20. Pupils review their learning in this lesson by participating in a class discussion on a topic which is both
POST-LESSON national and global. For example: Why do they think there is less crime in Malaysia than in
America/Europe? Do teenagers in Malaysia do the same things as teenagers in the West?
