ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON Students discuss their shopping habits and answer the following
two questions on the board: Do you think shopping is a chore or a
leisure activity? When was the last time you went shopping? What
did you buy?

ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON Students play a game revising the use of modal verbs. For example:
Each student is given a card with a list of challenging activities
such as touch your toes while standing on one leg, speak 5 words
backwards; wiggle your ears etc. The students speak to everybody
in their group to find out about their past and present abilities by
asking 'Can you...?' and 'Could you...? with one activity on their
card. students put a tick on the back of the card each time a
classmate answer 'Yes, I can' or 'Yes, I could'. If possible, the
classmate should also prove their ability by completing the activity
on the card. When ready, collect responses.

1.Students read the first example and discuss what they remember
about the use of the modal verbs may/might/could. Students find
an example of the modal verbs may/might/could + could infinitive
without to in the text and asked what it expresses.

1.Students read the first two examples and discuss what they

sentences 1-7 and they do the activity. The answers checked with

POST LESSON Students asked to make up some amusing sentences using the
structure ‘would rather…. than….’ i.e. ‘I would rather cycle through
a herd of angry elephants than do my language homework.’

ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON Students playing a game. For example: Take a piece of paper and
cut into small squares. Each student receives a small square. On
half the squares put a word / phrase related to shopping. On the
other half put a corresponding definition. Each student receives a
paper. Students stand up and mingle until they find their partner,
i.e., student with word and student with correct definition.
LESSON DELIVERY Activity A (Student Book page 42)
1.Students pay attention to the two pictures and they describe
what a shopping center and an open-air market are. Students read
through the list of the ideas as well as the words/ phrases in the
box and the understanding checked. Students do the activity in
pairs. Some pairs are chosen to report their answers to the class.
Activity B (Student Book page 42)
1.Students look at the two pictures and tell what they show.
Students asked to differentiate department store and shopping
center. Students read and tell what the shop and the department
store have in common. Students pay attention to the coupon that
comes with the advertisement of the department store and explain
how it can be used. Students read through the list of suggested
ideas as well as the suggested phrases in the box and their
understanding checked.
2.Students discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each place.
Then students should imagine that they want to buy a T-shirt for a
friend and they should decide where to buy it from giving reasons
for their choice. Students pay attention to the TIPS and do the
activity in pairs. Some pairs are chosen to act out the dialogues in
class.

Ask the class: is this right? Students respond by showing
appropriate card (red to show No and green to show Yes).

1.Students are asked whether they have ever filled in a
questionnaire, what it was about, what kind of information they
were asked to give, etc.
2.Students pay attention to the first part of the questionnaire and
tell what they think it is about and what kind of information they
are asked to give here. Students are asked two questions. Students
pay attention to the information a-d in the box and they identify
where each piece of information should appear in the
questionnaire without writing anything on the questionnaire as
they should save it for the personal information. The answers
checked with the class.

1.Students read through the rest of the questionnaire and their
understanding checked. Students fill in the questionnaires
individually or in pairs. Students are pointed out that when there
are no given options to choose from, they should provide their own
short answers.

Present Prefect Simple-Present Perfect Continuous (Students Book
page 45)
1.Students read the examples in the grammar box. Students pay
attention to the verbs in bold and they asked the difference
between Present Prefect Simple-Present Perfect Continuous.
Students refer to the Grammar Reference in page 161-
162.Students pointed out that the verbs live and work can be used
in the Present Perfect Simple or Present Perfect Continuous
with no difference in meaning.
2.Students pointed out that the verbs have and know are used in
the Present Perfect Simple to express duration. Students read
through the dialogues below the grammar box and do the activity.
The answers are checked with the class.
POST LESSON Students play a game to revise the perfect tense. Have a list of
words commonly used with the perfect (see list in the materials
column). The class is divided into 2-4 groups (depending on size of
class) Put one of the words on the board. The students must come
up with a sentence using the present perfect and the word on the
board. The first group to do so gets a point but only if the sentence
is grammatically correct. Continue with another word from the list.
The group with the most points wins.

ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON Students revise some of the shopping words / phrases used in the
unit so far. For example, shopping word bingo. Students are given a
piece of paper with a grid of 3 x 3 squares. List the shopping
words / phrases from the unit so far on the board. Students fill
their grid with 9 words from the board of their own choice. When
everybody is ready, give a definition of the words chosen randomly
from the board. If students have that word, they can cross it off the
grid. The first to get a line across or down wins. Make sure to check
they have chosen the right word for your definitions.

ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON Students play the A-Z of jobs. Students work with talk partner(s).
Each pair are given a piece of paper. Students write the alphabet
down the left-hand margin. When ready set a time limit and
students write one profession for every letter of the alphabet (i.e. A
- actor, B - builder…Z- zoologist) Students score a point for every
correct answer but some letters are quite tricky.
LESSON DELIVERY Activity A (Student Book page 47)
1.Students look at the pictures and tell what they show. Students
pay attention to the list of ideas they need to take into
consideration when comparing and contrasting the two pictures
and their understanding are checked. Students do the activity in
pairs and some pairs are chosen to report their answers to the
class.
Activity B (Student Book page 47)
1.Students asked the questions and a short discussion is initiated.
POST LESSON Students are divided into groups and take turns to read their
drafts. The rest of the group listen carefully and feedback on
whether the ideas were organized and clear enough and how
successful the use of persuasive language was.

ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON Write on the board 6 sentences / phrases (3 using formal language,
3 using informal language). Students are asked what is different
about the sentences. Students work with talk partner(s) and
change the formal phrases / sentences to informal and the
informal to formal.
LESSON DELIVERY Activity B (Student Book page 48)
1.Students pay attention to the advertisement and tell where it can
be found. Students tell what kind of job the advertisement is about.
Students read through the advertisement and underline unknown
words at the same time. Students pay attention to the email
following the advertisement and tell what it is. Students read
through the email and underline unknown words at the same time.
Students asked the questions in the rubric. The answer checked
with the class and students asked to justify their answer. Students
asked some comprehension questions.

1.Students read through the sentences 1-9 and their understanding
are checked. Students do the activity and their answers checked

1.Students read through the plan and point out the set phrases
expressions which can be used in the opening paragraph, the main
part and the closing paragraph of a letter / email and check
understanding. Students read out and explain the TIPS. Students
read through the sentences 1-6.
2.Students are explained that these sentences, which correspond to
different parts of a formal letter / email of application, are written
in a rather informal manner and therefore the register is
inappropriate. Students identify which part of a formal letter /
email of application each of the sentences 1-6 can go in and Ss
rewrite them in a more formal manner using the suggested set
phrases / expressions in the plan. Their answers checked with the
class.
