1 - Hector Duarte - Cullerton and Wolcott

Muralist, Hector Duarte was born in Michoacán in 1952 and studied

at David Alfaro Siqueiros’ workshop in 1977, he moved to Chicago in
1985. He has painted more than 50 murals in Chicago area dealing
with topics such as Identity & Immigration. He has exhibited at such
venues as the National Museum of Mexican Art, the School of the Art
Institute, and Casa Estudio Museo Diego Rivera in Mexico.

In the tale, Gulliver’s Travels, Gulliver is washed ashore after a shipwreck and finds
himself a prisoner of a race of tiny people who look much different than him.

Why does the artist uses this tale as a way to speak of the immigrant experience?

The artist honors the lives of people that did not survive the journey of coming to the
United States by placing a skull over his face.

Look closely at the torso and the legs of the man, why do you think he painted them to
look like that? Think about the terrain along the México/USA border
2 - Sentrock - 19th and Wood St.
Joseph "Sentrock" Perez is an artist from Phoenix, AZ. He began as a
graffiti artist and eventually transitioned into a muralist, street artist
and gallery artist. He came to Chicago when he came to art school at
Columbia College. Sentrock is known for using bright colors, intense
lettering and characters that grab the attention of viewer. Perez
allows his surroundings of living in Chicago to influence his latest
works, he often works with youth when creating.

In many of Chicago’s neighborhood’s, you may encounter one of Sentrock’s signature

characters. This figure features a young person with a mask over the face, he calls the
young bird “a symbol of freedom” he says his work is often meant to inspire the
“young Sentrock’s” of the world.

This mural was done in only a handful

of days! Look at the bottom right
corner of the art piece at the credits.

Sentrock had some help from the youth

of Yollocalli, the National Museum of
Mexican Art's youth initiative. The
youth there have painted several
murals in the community.

3 - Alejandro Medina -18th and Wood St

Born in Michoacan Mexico, Alejandro Medina has been active in the
Chicago mural scene for some time. Apart from having work
commissioned by a number of businesses in the neighborhood,
Medina has instructed youth groups such as students at Yollocalli
Arts Reach. The painter says the murals help to preserve the identity
of the Mexicano residents of Pilsen and also help to create certain
aesthetics in the zone.

Located in Morelia, Michoacan, the Fountain of Las Tarascas (behind dancers)

highlights the significant role of women in local indigenous cultures. The fountain is
decorated with shells and three women representing three indigenous princesses.

How can transforming a

public space help the
community preserve its
identity?

Jeff Maldonado studied under Mario Castillo, who is credited with
painting the first Mexicano mural in Chicago. For over 20 years, he
has worked in schools as an artist-in-residence,painting, printmaking,
and mural making. The J-Def Peace project was created in honor of
Maldonado’s son, a young Pilsen artist who wrote about the socio-
political issues and gang violence in his environment. He was killed
in a case of mistaken-gang identity in 2009.

Sometimes a mural’s message can be deciphered if the artist uses text or characters
that viewers can easily identify.

Observe the words found in the mural. What issue does the artist tackle here?

Some murals found outdoors are made with paint and some, like this one are made
of mosaic tile.

5 - Jeff Zimmerman -19th and Ashland Ave
A native of Chicago, Jeff Zimmermann has achieved national and
international recognition for his large scale murals featuring painted
images of contemporary pop culture and sensitively rendered
portraits. Zimmermann incorporates a diversity of people who live
and work in the communities he visits into his murals. Instead of
conclusively stating the significance of the personalities in his
murals, Zimmermann prefers viewers to make their own discoveries.

Zimmerman studied as a graphic artist and was volunteering with Pilsen kids in the
late 1990s when a priest at St. Pius V parish asked him to paint a mural of the Virgen
de Guadalupe (far right) This would be Zimmerman’s first mural.

On the far left panel, Zimmerman depicts what appear to be fairly young professionals
and recent graduates, under significant Latino historical figures. The middle panel
includes a representation of the working class community.

What connections do you think Zimmerman might be making between these groups
of people?

This wall holds only three of the many murals Jeff Zimmerman has painted in the
neighborhood, two of them which were painted over right across the street from this
wall , those murals were painted over in the Fall of 2016.
