Activity: Create face blends

In this activity, you will create a face blend on a part and then add an edge blend.
After examining the model, you will recreate the blends, but will use a different
order to obtain an improved result.

Open the part and specify the Selection bar options

1. Open syn1_face_blend_3.

2. Choose Home tab→Feature group→Face Blend .

3. On the Top Border bar, set the following values:

o Face Rule = Tangent Faces

o Curve Rule = Tangent Curves

Select geometry for the face blend

1. In the Face Blend dialog box, from the Type list, select Two Defining Face
Chains.
2. Select the face as shown.

The direction arrow should point away from the conical surface.

3. Click Select Face Chain 2 .

4. Select the face shown.

Define parameters and create the face blend

1. In the Cross Section group, set the following values:

o Section Orientation = Rolling Ball

o Shape = Circular
o Radius Method = Constant
o Radius = 6.35

2. In the Trim and Sew Options group, from the Blend Faces list, select Trim to
All Input Faces.
3. Ensure that the Trim Input Faces to Blend Faces and the Sew All Faces check
boxes are selected.
4. In the Settings group, select the Add Tangent Faces as Encountered check
box.
5. Click OK.

Define the blend overflow and settings

1. In the Overflow Resolutions group, clear the Roll on Edges (Smooth or
Sharp) check box.

2. In the Settings group, clear the Special Blend At Convex/Concave Y check box.
3. Click OK.
4. Examine the completed blend.

Although technically there does not appear to be anything wrong with the
current blend, this is not the desired visual result. You want to determine if
creating the edge blend first produces a better result.

Create the new edge blend

1. Delete the last edge blend created.
2. In the Part Navigator, right-click Edge Blend (6) and choose Make Current
Feature.

3. Choose Home tab→Feature group→Edge Blend .

4. On the Top Border bar, from the Curve Rule list, select Face Edges.
5. Select the face shown.

The edge of the face is selected.

6. In the Radius 1 on-screen input box, type 4.8 and press Enter.
7. Ensure the following check boxes are still cleared:

o Special Blend At Convex/Concave Y

8. Click OK.
9. In the Part Navigator, right-click Face Blend (8) and choose Make Current
Feature.

The blend between the boss and vertical pad now has a smoother transition.

10. Close the part.

You completed the activity.
