What I Need To Know

Hello! Do you know that planting , just like cooking requires

systematic way of doing things. It requires a step by step procedure
on how to select and prepare the soil, the seedlings, the tools, and
the location for planting. However, caring for fruit trees is the same
as caring for other trees. Orchard tools and equipment play a very
important role in systematic process of plant preparation. Their
availability makes the work easier and helps in the proper
execution of the different procedures.

With these requirements, all that is needed is a thorough

knowledge and skills on how to do the planting process and the
manner on how plants are to be taken care of.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

Demonstrate Scientific Processes of trees and fruit- bearing

trees.TLE6AG-0d-5

Processes

What’s In

Where ever to look, there are so many trees and fruit trees that can be found
anywhere in our home, school or even in streets. Can you name it? Do you know
that there are different scientific ways in propagating trees and fruit trees?
.

What’s New

Modern technology and research have gone a long way especially in the field
of Agriculture. There are different agricultural products today that did not exist
long ago. We now have seedless grapes, oranges, and watermelons. There are also
various plants with leaves and flowers of different colors that come from just one
plant. Fruit bearing trees are able to bear fruits within a very short span of time.
-

Some can bear fruits all year round. These advancements are possible because of
an agricultural technology called plant propagation
Are you excited to know our lesson today ? I know that you are curious
about the activities that we are going to discuss.

1.What are the different scientific ways of propagating trees and fruit trees that
are shown in the above pictures?
___________________________________________________________________________

Activity 2

In this activity, you will

Learn the different scientific ways of propagating trees and fruit trees and
know the following steps.
1. Cutting- the leaves are removed and the stems are cut 10 inches long.
One- half of the cutting is inserted into the soil. Example is sinigwelas and
kamoteng kahoy

2. Marcotting or Air Layering- induces the stem to develop roots while it’s
still growing on the mother plant. The steps are as follows;

a. Select a healthy branch

b. Remove a ring- like layer of soft bark about 2 to 3 inches long until you
reach the bark..
c. Apply sphagnum moss around the cut surface..
d. Cover securely with a piece of plastic sheet
e. Tie both ends to prevent drying of the rooting medium. Keep it moist
f. Cut the marcot just below the ball of sphagnum moss when sufficient roots
develop
g. Remove and place the potted in a cool and shady place.

5
3. Grafting- a plant propagation method that involves inserting a scion into a
stock so that they will for a union and grow together.

Steps in Grafting:
a. Preparing the stocks
b. Preparing the scion
c. Inserting the scion
d. Securing the graft

4. Budding – the process of transferring a lateral bud taken from the scion to
the stocks of the same family.

6
After doing the activities, ask the learners how did they feel about the
demonstration?

After knowing the different ways of scientific ways of propagation,

What do you think is the easiest way of trees and fruit propagation?

What is it?

What are the scientific ways of propagating trees and fruit trees?

The major methods or scientific way of a propagation are cuttings, layering,

division , budding and grafting. Cuttings involve rooting a severed piece of the
parent plant, layering involves rooting a part of the parent and then severing it; and
budding and grafting is joining two plant parts from different varieties. Marcotting
which is a type of vegetative plant propagation is commonly known as air layering
that involves rooting of a part of the stem while it is still attached to the parent
plant.
Propagation of fruit bearing trees by Air Layering or marcotting:

. Step 1: Tools and Materials required. The following tools and materials are
required to do layering
.Step 2: Selecting the right branch
.Step 3: Make deep cuts… Wrap with ball of soil…..
.Step 4: Wrap with plastic sheet….
.Step 5: Tie the ends……
.Step 6: See the roots through the plastic sheets

Propagate plants from cuttings

7
1. Cut a 4-to 5 inch long (10 to 12 cm) stem just below a leaf, and remove all
but two or three leaves at the top.
2. Dip the cut end into rooting hormone.

3. Insert the cuttings into a box or container, filled with about 3 inches of
moistened pure builders sand, vermiculite or perlite.
4. Slip the container into a self- sealing plastic bag.

5. Place the covered container in indirect light.

Day 2 @ 3

Appropriate Tools and Equipment and their Uses

In this activity, the teacher shows pictures of tools and some equipment used in

plant propagation.

8
What are the appropriate uses of tools that you shown in this pictures?

In this activity, you will match the pictures with the phrase.

9
_______ 1. Water container with small holes on the spout and used for water
the plants.
________ 2. Used to transfer soil plants and other materials from one place to
another.

_______ 3. Used for loosening the ground and taking up small plants.

_______ 4. Used for cutting tools suitable for making cutting from all plant
material.

_______ 5 Used for budding, grafting and fine cutting work.

Caring for fruit trees is the same as caring for other trees. Orchard tools and
equipment play a very important role in systematic process of plant preparation

Their availability makes the work easier and helps in the proper execution of the
different procedures.

1. Hoe – a tool used in digging and loosening hard, dry soil.
