What I Need To Know
What I Know
Before we start our lesson, may I know what you learned about
different types of an orchard farms, fruits and their location,
climate and market demands by answering the following questions.
3. These are small gardens where grafted trees are needed and
small enough to fit in the garden.
1
4. Include a large variety of facilities that produce nut- bearing
trees.
A. home or backyard orchards B. nut orchards C. seed
orchards D. fruit orchards
5. Most trees like coconut, mango, and santol tree are mostly
planted in.
___ 1. Crowbar
____2. Trowel
____3. Knife
____4.Scissor
____5. Rake
c.use for smoothening the soil and gathering dry leaves,or hay
2
A. seeds B. runners C. marcotting D. cuttings
4. Roots emerged from the surface from which new plant
develops from buds .
What’s In
Where ever to look, there are so many trees and fruit trees that can be found
anywhere in our home, school or even in streets. Can you name it? Do you know
that there are different scientific ways in propagating trees and fruit trees?
.
What’s New
Modern technology and research have gone a long way especially in the field
of Agriculture. There are different agricultural products today that did not exist
long ago. We now have seedless grapes, oranges, and watermelons. There are also
various plants with leaves and flowers of different colors that come from just one
plant. Fruit bearing trees are able to bear fruits within a very short span of time.
-
Some can bear fruits all year round. These advancements are possible because of
an agricultural technology called plant propagation
Are you excited to know our lesson today ? I know that you are curious
about the activities that we are going to discuss.

Activity 1: Where do I belong?
In this activity, you will show pictures of scientific ways of propagating trees and
fruit trees.

1.What are the different scientific ways of propagating trees and fruit trees that
are shown in the above pictures?
___________________________________________________________________________
Activity 2
Learn the different scientific ways of propagating trees and fruit trees and
know the following steps.
1. Cutting- the leaves are removed and the stems are cut 10 inches long.
One- half of the cutting is inserted into the soil. Example is sinigwelas and
kamoteng kahoy
2. Marcotting or Air Layering- induces the stem to develop roots while it’s
still growing on the mother plant. The steps are as follows;
5
3. Grafting- a plant propagation method that involves inserting a scion into a
stock so that they will for a union and grow together.
Steps in Grafting:
a. Preparing the stocks
b. Preparing the scion
c. Inserting the scion
d. Securing the graft
4. Budding – the process of transferring a lateral bud taken from the scion to
the stocks of the same family.
6
After doing the activities, ask the learners how did they feel about the
demonstration?
What do you think is the easiest way of trees and fruit propagation?
What is it?
What are the scientific ways of propagating trees and fruit trees?
. Step 1: Tools and Materials required. The following tools and materials are
required to do layering
.Step 2: Selecting the right branch
.Step 3: Make deep cuts… Wrap with ball of soil…..
.Step 4: Wrap with plastic sheet….
.Step 5: Tie the ends……
.Step 6: See the roots through the plastic sheets
7
1. Cut a 4-to 5 inch long (10 to 12 cm) stem just below a leaf, and remove all
but two or three leaves at the top.
2. Dip the cut end into rooting hormone.
3. Insert the cuttings into a box or container, filled with about 3 inches of
moistened pure builders sand, vermiculite or perlite.
4. Slip the container into a self- sealing plastic bag.
Day 2 @ 3
In this activity, the teacher shows pictures of tools and some equipment used in
plant propagation.
8
What are the appropriate uses of tools that you shown in this pictures?
Activity 2:
In this activity, you will match the pictures with the phrase.
9
_______ 1. Water container with small holes on the spout and used for water
the plants.
________ 2. Used to transfer soil plants and other materials from one place to
another.
_______ 3. Used for loosening the ground and taking up small plants.
_______ 4. Used for cutting tools suitable for making cutting from all plant
material.
Caring for fruit trees is the same as caring for other trees. Orchard tools and
equipment play a very important role in systematic process of plant preparation
Their availability makes the work easier and helps in the proper execution of the
different procedures.
2. Rake- is used for smoothening the soil and gathering loose leaves or hay.
3. Trowel- a tool with a curved blade used for loosening the ground and taking
up small plants.
4. Axe- a tool with a flat, sharp blade fastened to a handle used for cutting
5. Crowbar – a straight, heavy iron pointed at one end, about 4 feet in length,
used for digging holes and for planting seeds.
8. Fork- it is used in digging and preparing the soil for the plants.
10
9.Water Can- used for watering the plants.
10. Wheelbarrow- used to transfer soil plants and other materials from one
place to another.
11. Pieces of wood or bamboo- used as fences of seeds boxes and plots to
protect plants from being destroyed by animals.
12. Secateurs- the main cutting tools suitable for making cuttings from all plant
material.
14.Grafting and budding knife- is used for budding, grafting and fine cutting
work.
11
Day 4
Healthy and safety measures in propagating trees and fruit- bearing trees.

Always wear complete personal protective equipment which includes hairnet, hand
gloves, boots, eyeglass and face mask.
After doing this activity, how did you feel? If you plant/ propagate fruit- bearing
trees like mango, guava etc…. do you know the healthy and safety practices? Is
it good to practice safety measures in propagating plants?
2. Use the right tools for the right purpose. This ensures efficiency of work and
safety for the user
3. Read labels of pesticides and insecticides carefully before using. Follow
instruction as indicated.
4. Wear the proper attire when planting, loose, comfortable and absorbent
clothing gives freedom of movement and a feeling of comfort and freshness.
Wearing a hat protects you from the extreme heat of the sun. Wear a mask
when spraying insecticides. Wear gloves when handling plants, soil and
compost.
5. Use organic fertilizer instead of the commercial fertilizer .It is economical and
safer to use.
6. Get rid of insect and pests that invade the tree or seedlings.
7. Take care of tools and equipment to last long and maintain their efficiency.
- After using, clean or wash the tools before keeping. Oil the metal part of
tools.
- Provide a place for the tools; the place must be out of reach of children.
- If the tools will not be used for a long time, wipe the metal with oil.

3. A process by which a scion is inserted into the rootstock to unite and grow as
one plant.
A. marcotting B.grafting C. layering D. budding
4. This is also a form of grafting using a single bud.
