INSTALLATION OF FIRE ALARM SYSTEM

1.0 PURPOSE

This method statement describes the sequence and methods to be adopted for the installation of
Fire Alarm System.

2.0. SCOPE

The scope of work is installation of Fire Alarm System. This method statement gives guidelines
contained herein so as to ensure that the job execution complies with the requirement of the
specification and the authorities concerned and serves the intended purpose to satisfactory level.

This procedure is to be read in conjunction with the relevant ITP, outlining the responsibility
and the quality verification to be performed by various parties.

10.1 Project Manager shall be responsible for overall project execution, he will coordinate with
client and head office, progress monitoring, attending review meeting, resource
management, overall he will be responsible for timely completion of project in accordance
to all contractual requirements.

10.2 Project Engineer shall be responsible for co-ordination and monitoring construction
activities and construction groups and ensure that work is done as per specification and
approved drawings and all safety measures are implemented. Allocation of manpower and
machineries in consultation with construction manager
 Achieving target progress, backlog if any, he will consult with construction manager for
its recovery action plan.
 Monitoring whether work is going on as per approved method statement/drawing/
specification etc.
 Monitoring lines, levels as per approved drawings.
 Monitoring timely materials supply at construction location.
 Raising RFI and other necessary inspection and test records and forward to QA/QC
Engineer for further process.

10.3 Electrical Engineer


 Preparing daily progress repot / site report
 Engagement of manpower and machineries in work as required.
 Verifying line, level etc.
 Supervising every individual activity.
 Initiating for RFI and other necessary inspecting records.

10.4 Foreman shall be responsible for checking & setting out alignments, levels and installation
etc.

10.5 Surveyor shall be responsible for checking & setting out alignments, levels etc.

10.6 HSE Incharge

 Assist to implement, monitor the Health Safety & Environmental implementation


and ensuring safe system of work have been adopted.
 Provide advice on HSE issues to make recommendations to site management team.
 Prepare task specific risk assessment and advising project management team for
mitigation controls at the workplace.
 Ensuring that permit to work system is obtained for the activity and all required
controls mentioned have been implemented so far as reasonable practicable by the
project management team.
 Coordinate with Client/Consultants to rectify any deficiency found in safety at the
workplace related to activity.

 Investigate incidents, determine root cause and develop corrective actions to


prevent reoccurrence.
 Advising the project management team for the implementation of required task
specific PPE’s.
 Advice project management team regarding the regulatory requirements and its
implementation.
 Has the full authority to stop/Suspend any unsafe / hazardous activity or situation
which does not meets the legal and other requirements.

10.7 QA/QC Engineer:


 Monitoring whether the activities are in accordance to approved method statement / IFC
drawing /specification.
 Raising and closing internal NCR if any.
 Documentation in accordance to approved PQP / ITP.

11.0 METHODOLOGY

11.1 Pre-Work
11.1.1 Any discrepancies, damages, etc. should be notified and reported for further action.
11.1.2 Ensure all Pipes for installation are new, straight, no defects and in good condition.
11.1.3 All installations/inspections/testing works shall be carried out in accordance with
approved method statement and shop drawings, specifications, ITP and
manufacturer’s instructions.
11.1.4 Work shall be carried out by the site technicians under the guidance of Electrical
Engineer Engineer/Supervisor/Foreman/Surveyor and shall further be checked and
approved by QAQC Engineer for Inspection Request (IR).

11.2 Re-work
 Sign off permits with full team
 Check up for closing
 Refer to clause in HSE

11.3 Material Inspection


11.3.1 Upon delivery/receipt of Pipes QA/QC Engineer/Electrical Engineer will be
inspected for physical damages and as per approved material submittal.
11.3.2 QA/QC Engineer will offer Request for inspection to the consultant for Approval.

11.4 Pre-Commencement Requirements


11.4.1 Prior to installation ensure all relevant material submittal, material inspection,
method statement, ITP and shop drawings are approved and available to the
installation team.
11.4.2 Ensure necessary resources in terms of labour, plant, equipment, tools and task
lighting are arranged to carry out the job.
11.4.3 Proper access and egress to the work area to be provided.
11.4.4 Ensure all permissions and consents are obtained from authority.
11.4.5 Ensure Drawings are approved.
11.4.6 Discuss method statement/risk assessment with all concerned parties.
11.4.7 Ensure the operatives are trained on method statement.
11.4.8 Barricade the area needs improvement using safety barricade tapes / hard barricade
as per the EHS and project safety regulations.

11.5 Procedure

11.5.1 Handling and Storage


On receipt of the Fire alarm system materials at site necessary precautions shall be
taken for unloading, shifting and storage, as follows

 Material shall be stored in a covered / dry space at all the time to avoid being
damaged.
 All materials received at site shall be inspected and ensured that the materials are as
per approved material submittal.
 Any discrepancies, damage etc., found will be notified and reported for further
action.
 Material found not suitable for site use will be removed from site immediately.

11.5.2 Pre-Installation Checks


 Ensure that all safety requirements are in place in accordance with the project safety
plan.
 Ensure that the correct revision of the approved (code A or B) working drawing is
being used. Note that any areas on the drawing are subject to revision, work should
not proceed in these areas until an update drawing has been issued.
 Ensure that all materials used have passed receiving inspection in accordance with
QA procedures and are not damaged or defective. Any non-conforming materials
must be labeled and returned to the quarantine area in accordance with procedures.

 Ensure that all electricians and helpers are aware of the correct materials handling
and installation procedures to ensure the best quality of workmanship.
 Ensure that all building surfaces to which final fix devices are fixed are completed to
acceptable tolerance and are in a suitably clean and dry condition. Any
unsatisfactory conditions are to be reported and installation shall not proceed until
corrective action has been taken
 Ensure all GI trunking, GI conduits, cable pulling work and power sockets are
completed as per approved shop drawings and Cable Continuity is already approved
by company and ready to be terminated.
 Select suitable access method (i.e. steps or tower) according to height of the final fix
device above finished floor level. This should also take into account the maximum
height needed for any soffit fixings required.

11.5.3 Installation Procedure


 Power supply for the FACP shall be through an un-switched SPUR outlet located
above the FACP concealed above false ceiling. The un-switched SPUR switch shall
be a separate branch circuit from UPS DB.
 The power cable to be terminated in the P, N terminals of the panel and the earth
cable to be terminated in the designated terminal.
 The sounder circuits to be terminated in the A+, A- and B+, B- of the NAC cards.
 The loop cables to be terminated in the IDNET Terminal block. Cables to be
terminated in the A+, A- , shield and B+, B- , shield.
 All installations shall be carried out as per approved shop drawings.

Smoke detector installation:


 Ceiling-Mounted Smoke Detectors: Not less than 100 mm from a sidewall to the
near edge. On smooth ceilings, install not more than 9 m apart in any direction.
 The selection and placement of smoke detectors shall take into account both the
performance characteristics of the detector and the areas into which the detectors are
to be installed to prevent nuisance alarms or improper operation after installation.
Smoke detectors shall not be installed in areas where air velocity is greater than
1.5m/sec, and shall not be located in a direct airflow. If sitting of detectors in such
areas is unavoidable, use detectors specifically designed for use in such conditions.

Detector installation on Slab:


 The fire rated loop cable to be installed on the concrete slab fixed by clips each at a
distance of 30cms. Circular G.I back box to be installed on the slab to mount the
detector base.

 The cables are entered in to the circular G.I. back box and then terminated in the +ve
and –ve terminals of the detector base.
 All surface mounted back box shall be of GI Box, UL Listed.
Detector installation on false ceiling:
 The fire rated loop cable to be installed on the concrete slab. Circular G.I back box
to be installed on a steel rod/ thread above the detector location in the false ceiling.
 The loop cables to be brought down to the G.I. mounting box on the false ceiling.
Extra lengths of cable to be considered for relocation.
 The detector base to be installed on the G.I. mounting box on the false ceiling and
the cables are terminated in the +ve and –ve terminals of the detector base

Heat Detector: Control panel to select alarm to be per sensor as fixed temperature, or
rate-of-rise temperature, or the combination of both.

Manual Stations: Mount semi-flush in recessed back boxes. Manual call points to
be installed as per the locations shown in the shop drawings and not to be
installed more than 1400mm from the finished floor level.
Water-Flow Detectors and Valve Supervisory Switches: Module is Located near
each sprinkler valve station and/or water flow detector that is required to be
supervised. The module shall be mounted inside a back box and wired to the
sprinkler valve station and/or water flow detector via GI flexible conduit.
Third party systems: Module is installed near third party systems like AHU/FAHU,
Lifts, Access control system, motorized dampers, lighting control system,
central battery system etc. which is to be connected to fire alarm system.
The module shall be mounted inside a back box and wired to the equipment.
Audible Alarm Devices (Speakers): Install the speakers and sounders not more
than 2300 mm above the finished floor as indicated on the fire alarm
drawings. Install speakers and Sounders on flush-mounted back boxes with
the device-operating mechanism concealed behind a grille. Combine
audible and visible alarms at the same location into a single unit.
FACP: Semi-recessed mount with tops of cabinets not more than 1800 mm above
the finished floor. Wires must be terminated through recessed 50mm PVC

conduits. Panel Module installation shall follow manufacturer


recommendation.
Electronic Sounders: Install the semi recessed sounders not more than 2300 mm
above the finished floor as indicated on the fire alarm drawings.

Telephone Circuits:
Installation of Remote Telephone Jack in Stairs/ Lobby

 The fire man telephone circuit cable shall be pulled to the 2 X 4 GI back
box concealed in the wall.
 Fire Cables shall be terminated into Remote telephone Jack using fire
rated glands in the 2 X 4 back box as per manufacturer’s recommendation.
 Install Remote telephone Jack not more than 1.4 Meter above the finished
floor as indicated on the Approved fire alarm drawings.
 The cables are made to enter the 2 X 4 GI back box and then terminated in
the +ve and –ve terminals of the Remote telephone Jack.
Installation of Remote Telephone Jack in Lifts

 The fire man telephone circuit cable shall be pulled to the 2 X 4 GI back
box in the lift car.
 Fire rated travelling Cables shall be terminated into Remote telephone
Jack using fire rated glands in the 2 X 4 back box as per manufacturer’s
recommendation.
 Install Remote telephone Jack not more than 1.4 Meter above the finished
floor inside the lift car as indicated on the Approved fire alarm drawings.
 The cables are made to enter the 2 X 4 GI back box and then terminated
in the +ve and –ve terminals of the Remote telephone Jack.
 All the cables to be for continuity before installation of the fire alarm
devices.
 The above installation procedure to be followed for installation of devices
for Mock up.

Tagging and Identification:

 Tag/identification materials shall be as per specification and


Consultant/Company approval.
 Mock-up can be done for consultant approval prior to proceed the

12 SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

Health Safety and Environment

a. HSE Induction :
Amana HSE will provide safety induction to all the new employees to help adjust
them with the new tasks and working environment at the project site. Safety induction
will be mandatory for all the employees working on the project site. A record of
safety induction will be kept in the HSE office for reference and audit purpose.

b. Training:
Job specific training shall be provided to all the employees involved in the task in the
form of tool box talks, hazard identification to ensure a safe system of work.

c. Personnel Protective Equipment:


All employees shall be provided with PPEs to protect them from the work related
hazards and risks. Hard hats, eye protection, hi viz jackets, steel toe safety shoes are
mandatory for the employees working at the project construction site.

First aid arrangements shall be ensured at the project site to give immediate first aid to
person suffering from work related injury if any. Trained first aider shall be available
on the project site at all times during the course of work. Fully equipped first aid room
shall be provided and manage at the project site.

e. Heat Protection:
Air condition rest room shall be provided to employees with sufficient rest time
during the hot season. Mandatory UAE midday break shall be strictly observed on
site.

f. Permit beyond working hours:


Working permit beyond the normal working hours shall be obtained from Amana
HSE and authority if required.
It will be ensured that all permit requirements are implemented as mentioned in the
permit system.

g. Emergency:
Adequate safety measures shall be followed in case of any emergency as per the
approved project HSE plan and OSHAD safety guidelines rev.3.0 in case of any
serious emergency situation occurred at the project site.

Emergency contact numbers shall be displayed at the project site at prominent


locations. Emergency procedure shall be cascaded to all employees during the safety
induction.

Safety Hazards & Precautions:

 All the safe practices will be adopted during the course of work.
 Special work permits, wherever required, shall be obtained before
commencing work.
 All necessary personal protective equipment must be used including leather
apron while conducting hot works.
 Ensure competent operatives are performing the task, gas cylinders must be
carried on trolley and flash back arrestor provided for the cylinders and torch.
 Proper access for the labor and equipment shall be provided for the works.

Power Tools:

Ensure the provision of step down transformers to provide and maintained 110 V
power for the power tools. Inspection and colour coding of power tools by competent
person- electrician.

Ensure that basic PPEs and job specific PPEs are worn by the operatives involved in
the use of power tools like hard hats, eye protection, safety shoes, hearing protection,
face shield where applicable.

All electrical lines shall come through ELCB 30 M/amps. Ensure that power tools
shall have dead man switch.

Working at Height Safety Precautions

Fall protection system i.e. the use of double lanyard full body harness with shock
absorber shall be worn by all the employees working 2 mtrs and above height.
Permit to work system for the task. Working at height trained employees shall used
scaffoldings.
Ensure that scaffolding tagging and inspection have been carried by competent and
3rd party certified inspector.
Ensure all scaffolds above 10 meters are erected, altered, used and dismantled in
accordance with the design drawing or manufacturer’s instructions where applicable.
Scaffold ‘fittings’ and other connections shall be securely tightened. Where ‘safety
fittings’ are used.
Ensure that guardrails and midrails have been in place to prevent fall of operatives.
Ensure that scaffolding platform is complete with the trap door always closed when
the platform is being used.
