The document discusses various surgical instruments like forceps, scissors and retractors along with their uses in procedures.

Instruments like Mayo scissors, artery forceps, Kelly forceps and Allis clamps are discussed along with how they are used to cut, clamp and grasp tissues.

Hemostatic forceps like mosquito forceps and Kocher forceps are used to control bleeding and handle blood vessels during surgery.

MAYO SCISSORS CURVED

USES - It used to cut heavy tissue tough structures like skin, fascia, muscle, etc. The curved
style of Mayo scissor is used to cut thick tissues such as those found in the uterus, muscles, breast,
and foot. Mayo scissors used for dissection are placed in tissue with the tips closed. The scissors
are then opened so that the tips open and spread out the tissue during the dissection process.
ARTERY FORCEPS/ HEAMOSTATE

USES - It uses controlling bleeding and retraction of skin and tissue. As well as being used
for haemostatic control, artery forceps may be used as markers on swabs or packs as well as
occasionally being used for blunt tissue resection. A strong artery forceps was used to grip the
fourth edge and twist it inwards so that the impacted rim was freed from the rectal wall and overall
circumference of the rim was reduced.
KELLY HEMOSTATIC FORCEPS/ MOSQUITO/ ROCHESTER PEAN FORCEPS

USES-this surgical instrument used to clamp small blood vessels it’s a straight mosquito and a
curved mosquito according to its jaw angle. All hemostatic forceps, including mosquito forceps,
are used mainly to control bleeding and handle blood vessels during surgery. Mosquito forceps are
one of many types of hemostatic forceps. They also are commonly known as “mosquito clamps.”
ALLIS FORCEPS OR ALLIS CLAMPS

USES- Allis Forceps or allis clamps with sharp Tooth, its uses and designed to grasp and hold
heavy tissue, organs, skin, fascia tissue, soft tissues like bowel and breast tissue, also used in the
clamp and hold operating materials such as tubes and drapes. Allis clamp is a surgical instrument
that is used by the surgeon to hold or grasp heavy tissue. It is also used to grasp fascia and soft
tissues such as breast or bowel tissue.Allis force is used to grasp the cervix to stabilize the uterus,
such as when an intrauterine device is being inserted. Source
BABCOCK FORCEPS

USES-Similar to Allis forceps/Clamp. It is less traumatic due to their wider and rounded edges.
mostly used in laparotomy for grasping tube-like organs or structures like ureters, intestine,
appendices, and other delicate tissue.During appendix removal, it is used to hold the appendix or
the caecum (part of the intestine) During laporotomy (abdominal surgery), it is used to hold the
small intestine. It is used to hold the surrounding organs when two blood vessels need to be ligated
(joined). It is used to hold the fallopian tube during its removal (salpingectomy) in cases of
abnormal pregnancy or cancer. It is used to hold the uterus during its removal (hysterectomy).
TRACHEOSTOMY TUBE

Uses of The Tracheostomy Tube

Deliver oxygen to the lungs in case you are unable to breathe normally.
It allows you to breathe if your throat is blocked by a tumor.
It reduces the risk of food or fluid that enters into the lungs if you find coughing difficult.
BP HANDLE

(Discovered by Charles Russell Bard and Morgan Parker, founders of the Bard-Parker Company)
USES-Generally for making incisions in skin and muscle. Commonly used to cut the skin in
abdominal operations. For precision cutting, stripping, sharp angle cuts and also stencil cutting due
to its similarity to the X-Acto artknife blade. Debriding hard skin for example callus by Podiatrists.
For cutting stencils, scoring and etching. For narrow cuts. For corner cuts, trimming, stripping, and
cutting mats and gaskets.Used in general surgery but also within a Laboratory setting for
Histology and Histopathology
MAYO SCISSOR STRAIGHT

USES- Straight-bladed Mayo scissors are designed for cutting body tissues near the surface of a
wound. As straight-bladed Mayo scissors are also used for cutting sutures, they are also referred to
as "suture scissors". Curved-bladed Mayo scissors allow deeper penetration into the wound than
the type with straight blades, also used for cut suture thread, bandage, and gauze piece.
METZENBAUM SCISSORS/ FINE SCISSORS

USES- Used to cut fine structures like vessels, tendons, and other soft tissue. Metzenbaum scissors
are surgical scissors designed for cutting delicate tissue and blunt dissection. The scissors come in
variable lengths and have a relatively long shank-to-blade ratio. They are constructed of stainless
steel and may have tungsten carbide cutting surface inserts. The blades can be curved or straight,
and the tips are usually blunt. This is the most common type of scissors used in organ-related
operations.
KELLY HEMOSTATIC FORCEPS

USES-An essential component for any tactical medical kit, these sterile, curved 5.5" Kelly
Hemostatic Forceps with a serrated blunt tip can be used to clamp large blood vessels, manipulate
heavy tissue, and dissect soft tissue.
BURLISHEAR

USES-
A Burlishear is used to clamp deep blood vessels. Burlishears have two closed finger rings.
Burlishears with an open finger ring is called tonsil hemostats. It is mainly used during heart
surgery and brain surgrery.
SPONGE FORCEPS

USES- Sponge forceps are mostly used in the surgical procedure to create a surgical site using a
sponge to paint betadine or spirit. Another use of a sponge forceps is to hold the hard surface and
to hold and retract the cervix. Sponge Forceps are used both in non-surgical and surgical
gynecogical procedures. They are able to atraumatically grasp and hold the bladder or cervix
during an examination, and they can be used to manipulate the tissue while the doctor performs
the procedure.
TOWEL CLAMP/CLIP

USES -This Surgical Instrument is used to hold and grasp towels and drapes, to maintain a sterile
field during surgery or any invasive procedure. A towel clamp is a surgical instrument which is
used to secure towels and surgical draping during a medical procedure. In addition to being used
in the operating room, towel clamps are also used in procedures in clinics and doctor's offices
where drapes are used.
KOCHAR FORCEPS

USES -
It has 1×2 teeth on a straight or curved jaw. available in various sizes. It is used for a strong grip.
Mostly used in orthopedics, and general surgery to hold the muscles, ligaments, gallbladder,
thyroid, etc. Kocher Forceps are used to clamp massive tissues. These forceps are also known as
artery forceps. Its unique design help avoids slippage when surgeons try to grip the arteries. These
hemostatic forceps are used during general surgeries and applied during specific procedures such
as removing thyroid or draining of gallbladder.
HEMOSTATIC CLIPS AND APPLICATOR

USES -this Surgical Instrument is used in surgical procedures and other bleeding conditions to
control bleeding by application of a hemostatic clip. mostly used in vascular surgeries. It is
available in various sizes as per usage.
RIGHT ANGLE FORCEPS

USES- Another name is “Mixter”. A right angle is used to clamp hard to reach vessels and to place
suture around the vessel. The right angle with a suture attached is called a “tie on a passer”. Due to
its angle, this instrument may be used in various scenarios, but surgeons may reach for this forceps
in situations when they need to hold or tie a suture around a structure in the body.
MAYO-HEGAR NEEDLE HOLDER

Uses -a needle holder is used to grasp/hold and guide the needle when suturing. Surtex
manufactures all of its Mayo-Hegar Needle Holders from surgical grade stainless steel only or
with combination of tungsten carbide tip. Specialty: Cardiovascular, Dental, ENT, General
Surgery, Gynecology & Obstetrics, Neurosurgery / Spine, Oral & Maxillofacial, Orthopedic,
Stomach, Intestine & Rectum, Urology. Author Name: Mayo-Hegar.
DEBAKEY FORCEPS- SURGICAL INSTRUMENT

USES- It is atraumatic tissue forceps, used for delicate tissue, particularly in cardiovascular
surgery to avoid tissue damage during manipulation.
GELPI PERINEAL RETRACTOR

USES-Which has two pointed ends, it is used to retract small incision. It’s used to retract wound
edges during deep abdominal procedures. Gelpi Retractor is a ratcheted, finger ring retractor often
used in smaller surgical sites. Once the targeted tissue has been held back, the locking mechanism
allows the retractor to remain in place, and does not require someone to hold it during the
procedure.
GOULET RETRACTOR-

USES - It is used to retract shallow or superficial incisions. Surgical Instrument. A Goulet

retractor accustomed retract shallow or superficial incisions. A malleable or ribbon retractor
accustomed to retract deep wounds. These retractors bent to various shapes for the structure to
retract without causing any damage to tissue. A Weitlaner retractor (self-retaining) used to retract
shallow incisions.
