II. Answer the following questions:

1. Who was Meena? What was strange about her?
Ans: Meena was a good friend of the author, Sudha Murthy. She was an LIC
officer earning a good salary.
She was very strange as she seemed to be forever unhappy. Whenever the author
met her, the author felt depressed, Meena’s gloom and cynicism had a way of
spreading to others. She never had anything positive to say on any topic or about
any person.

2. How did the narrator know that Meena had changed completely?
Ans: Many years later, when narrator met Meena on a rainy day, she looked very
cheerful and happy and asked the narrator to have tea with her. The author
grumbled about the weather but Meena did not complain about anything. This
attitude of Meena was completely unexpected as she was too pessimistic when
she had met her many years back. As such the author came to know that Meena
was a completely changed person.

3. Describe the scene that Meena saw through the window.

Ans: One monsoon day when she looked out of the bedroom window and started
cursing the rain, she noticed the beggar and his granddaughter who lived in front
of her house, playing in the rain on the road because there was no traffic. They
were laughing, clapping and screaming joyfully, as if they were in the paradise.
Hunger and rain did not matter. They were completely drenched but totally
happy. She envied their zest for life.

4. How did the transformation come about?

Ans: Meena was astonished by the sight of the beggar and his grand daughter,
playing in the rain. That scene forced her to look at her own life. She realised that
she had so many comforts, none of which they had. But they had the most
important of all assets- they knew how to be happy with life as it was . Meena
felt ashamed of herself for having been grumpy all the time when she had more
to be grateful for, than most people could imagine. That day she decided to
