f. Coral ecosystems are a source of food for millions: protect coastlines from storms and
erosion; provide habitat, spawning and nursery grounds for economically important fish
species; provide jobs and income to local economies from fishing, recreation, and
tourism; are source of new medicines. There are other ways to protect the reefs such as
discouraging people from collecting coral for ornamental purposes, illegal dynamite
fishing , dumping garbage into the sea.

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef system in the world, and can be seen
from outer space. Encompassing a 133,000-square mile area, it’s comprised of more
than 2,900 individual reefs and 1,050 islands, which stretch out over 1,400 miles
long.
Stretching over 550 miles from Cancun to Honduras, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef
is the world’s second largest coral reef system, attracting some 150,000 people to
Mexico each year.
Located in the Philippines, Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park was declared a UNESCO
World Heritage Site in 1993 due to its pristine coral reef system. Encompassing
97,030 hectares, the park’s two coral atolls are home to 600 species of fish, 360
species of coral, 11 species of sharks, 13 species of dolphins and whales, birds, plus
hawksbill and green sea turtles.
Here in San Juan, Batangas, there is a coral reforestation project constructed in La
Luz Beach Resort last 2017 since San Juan, Batangas is blessed with a long coastal
areas.
