General Information
Description
This course focuses on some of the important current issues in strategic management. It will concentrate on modern
analytical approaches and on enduring successful strategic practices.
It is consciously designed with a technological and global outlook since this orientation, in many ways, highlights the
significant emerging trends in strategic management.
The course is intended to provide the students with a pragmatic approach that will guide the formulation and
implementation of corporate, business, and functional strategies.
In addition, the course prepares the student to integrate critical current issues in strategic management with crucial
learning from many FEB UNTAR curriculum courses.
It concentrates on casework and a team approach to learning with a focus on critical thinking. It is designed with an
applied perspective and highlights significant emerging trends in strategic management.
It is intended to provide learners with the business skills and knowledge transfer that prepares them for further
baccalaureate learning and on-the-job implementation of corporate, business, and functional strategies

Expectations and Goals

• To develop strategic thinking by learning the concepts, models and tools of strategy analysis and
applying them to actual competitive situations.
• To develop your capacity to think strategically about a company, its business position, how it can gain a
sustainable competitive advantage, and how its strategy can be implemented and executed successfully
using various resources.
• To build your skills in conducting strategic analysis in a variety of industries and competitive
situations and to provide you with a stronger understanding of the competitive challenges of the
global market environment, as well as of the e-business environment.
• To provide a thorough understanding of the strategic planning for organizational resources process,
tools and methodologies, and finally
• To provide a realistic experience in crafting corporate resources strategy, reasoning carefully about
strategic options, using what if analysis (via a business simulation game) to evaluate action alternatives,
and making sound strategic decisions.

Assignment (A) is a group paper, due on or before mid-test

We try to comprehend the Artificial Intelligence Start-ups and compare it with the existing world UNICORN

The format of the paper should be text, exhibits, and a bibliography of sources used. The paper should be no more
than five double-spaced pages of text and 5 exhibits, excluding the bibliography. Length is not a virtue, and students
should "spend the time to make the document shorter."

Choose one among the listed above. Understanding a business model is a pivot point here by using the Business
Model Canvas.

Phase II: Industry Overview


1. Identify the industry in which the organization or division competes or what industry that company
will disrupt
2. Gather information on the disrupted industry
3. Lean the IMPACT of COVID19 PANDEMIC to its business.
4. Analyze the new economy and the disrupted industry. What can you conclude about the
attractiveness of the new economy with AI vs. the disrupted industry over the next three years?
Phase III: Compare with
1. Choose the related world UNICORN
2. Compare and Contrast it.

Assignment (B) Case Studies and Presentation

One case assigned write-ups is required to accompany the power point presentation. In essence, your GROUP paper
should demonstrate that you have carefully analyzed the case, ONLY THE TEXT BOOKCASE, and have a coherent view
on how the company should proceed. Be clear and concise. Your writing style has a significant impact on your ability to
communicate your ideas.

Each team member is expected to contribute his/her fair share of work. At the end of project, a peer review will be
taken in complete confidence to assure that all players contribute equally. Please kindly review pg. 24 of the Text
Book.

Your Group project is to analyze strategic management case study and present it to your classmates after midterm.

Before the presentation at the last two week of the semester, you must finish:

In your presentation, choose the case on the selected case study. Read thoroughly pg. 25, and 386 onward of
the text book as a guidance of Making Oral Presentation. Use appropriate methods and tools to make strategic
analysis of the firm. Give suggestions on the strategic choices and possible implementation steps for the firm.
In order to get a pass mark for your presentation, please ensure you:

• Choose a company/case from selected cases provided.


• Start by introducing the background of the firm you chose. The information which connects to your
conclusions should be highlighted.
• Follow the steps that a strategic management case study normally does: vision and mission statement,
external and internal assessment, analysing potential strategic choices, making strategic decisions and
suggesting implementations.
• Paper work: submit andpresentation material of your case study before your presentation.
• Technology requirement: prepare some ppt. slides for your presentation.
• Time control: the length of your presentation should be in the range of 20-30 minutes, including questions
and answers.
• Due dates: the dates for presentations are after Mid Term.

Class Participation

Due to the COVID19 pandemic, and large scale social restriction, we conduct this course virtually.

Your active participation in the discussion in class is considered very important in this course. Prior preparation of the
cases and assigned readings are essential. By combining your participation into your UAS Grade, your grade will depend
on your participation in class. Hence we hope to encourage you to feel responsible for making this course work. Class
attendance virtually is required.
