Tutorial 3

Use Kirchhoff’s Laws to solve the following problems:

1. In the circuit of Figure 1, find the currents in the resistors R1, R2 and R3. [Ans:
10/11 A, 3/11 A, 13/11 A]

2. Find the currents in resistors R1 and R3 (see Figure 2). [Ans: 6 A, 4 A]

3. In the circuit shown in Figure 3, determine the magnitude and direction of current
in each battery. [Ans: 8A, 4A, 12A]

4. In the unbalanced Wheatstone bridge shown in Figure 4, the galvanometer has

resistance of 4 Ω. Find (i) the current through the galvanometer (ii) currents in the
four branches of the bridge (iii) potential difference across AC and (iv) effective
resistance between A and C. [Ans: 2/67 A, IAD = 46/67 A, IAB = 96/67 A, IBC
=94/67 A, ICD = 48/67 A, VAC = 528/67 V, RAC = 3.72 Ω]

5. In Figure 5, find “V” and the magnitude and direction of the unknown currents in
the branches XN, YN and ZN. [Ans: 8.42 V, 1.684 A, 4.21 A, 2.1 A]

6. Find Vs in Figure 6 using Kirchhoff laws. [Ans: 41 V]

7. Find the current and power delivered by each battery in the circuit shown in
Figure 7. [Ans: 0 A, 0.667 A, 0W, 1.33 W]

8. Find the values of R and Vs in Figure 8. Also find the power supplied by the
source. [Ans: 2 Ω, 12 V]

9. Compute the value of battery current I in Figure 9. [Ans: 6 A]

10. A battery of unknown e.m.f. is connected across resistances as shown in Figure

10. The voltage drop across the 8 Ω resistor is 20 V. What will be the current
reading in the ammeter? What is the e.m.f. of the battery? [Ans: 0.7 A, 67.3 V]
