DEPARTMENT : EEE
Students : I YEAR II Sem EEE ‘A’ Section
Subject Code &Name : EEPC10 & CIRCUIT THEORY
DATE & TIME OF EXAM : 30.07.2020 & 03.00 PM to 05.00PM
Note to Student: TIME MANAGEMENT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY

ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS Marks :30

1. The power factor of a DC circuit is always_____________. (1)

2. The r.m.s value of a sinusoidal AC current is equal to its value at an angle of _______degrees. (1)

3. The r.m.s value and average value is the same in the case of _____________waveform. (1)

4.Four branches terminate at a common node. The reference direction of each branch current (i1,i2,i3
and i4) is toward the node. If i1 = 100 cos(wt+25o)A, i2 = 100 cos (wt+145o) and i3 = 100 cos (wt-
95o)A, find i4. (2)

5. A university student is making coffee while listening to a Buck’s game on the radio. At the same
time, her roommate is watching the packers on a solid-state TV. All these appliances are supplied
from a 120V branch circuit protected by a 20A circuit breaker. If the roommate turns on a portable
heater, is the circuit breaker tripped? will the roommate able to use the heater if the coffeemaker is
unplugged? (2)

6.Find the reading of each wattmeter in the circuit shown in Fig.1 if ZA =20 ∠300, ZB =60∠00, and ZC
=40∠-300. Show that the sum of the wattmeter readings equals the total average power delivered to
the unbalanced three phase load. (3)

7. A series RL circuit has a constant voltage V applied at t=0. At what time does VR =VL ? (2)

8. A constant voltage is applied to a series RL circuit at t=0. The voltage across the inductance is
20V at 3.46ms and 5V at 25ms. Obtain R if L=2H. (2)

9. A 4500 VA load at power factor 0.75 lagging is supplied by a 60Hz source at effective voltage
240V. Determine the parallel capacitance in microfarads necessary to improve the power factor to (i)
0.9 lagging (ii) 0.9 leading. (3)

10. Derive the Q of the series RLC resonance circuit. (3)

11. A certain network consists of large number of ideal linear resistances, one of which is designated
as R and two constant ideal sources. The power consumed by R is P1 when only the first source is
active and P2 when only second source is active. In both sources are active simultaneously then
the power consumed by R is _____________. (2)

12. A circuit with a resistance R and a lossless inductance in series is connected across a supply (V)
of known frequency (f). A capacitance C is now connected in series with RL, with V &f being
constant. Justify the following statement with reasons. The current in the circuit normally
increases with the introduction of C. Under what condition, the current may also decrease explain
the condition with reason. (2)

13. The three coupled coils shown in Fig.2 have coupling coefficients of 0.50. Obtain the equivalent
inductance between the terminals AB. (2)
