C. LESSON CONTENT:

NATURE AND PURPOSES ON ONLINE PLATFORMS

Online platform is a specially developed platform using Internet technology. Online

platforms have revolutionized access to any information. In our daily life today, we used Internet
in doing such things and in our learning purposes. Here are some examples of Online Platforms:

1. Social Media Platforms – Websites like Facebook allow you to create not only personal
accounts but also pages and groups where you can share content. The only downside of
this is that you are restricted to Facebook’s “one-size-fits-all” design. (note: It has low
customization but backed up by popularity.)

a. Facebook-
Facebook is the biggest and the most popular social platform in the
Internet. It is commonly used by students and is a gaining ground among
professionals too.

 Marketplace – allows users to post, read and respond to classified ads.

 Groups – allows users who have common interests to discover each other and
interact.
 Events – allows users to publicize an event, invite others users and track those
who plans to attend.
 Pages – allows users to create and promote a public page built around a
specific and chosen topic.
 Presence technology – allows users to see which contacts are online and
possible to chat asap.

b. Instagram- is an online mobile media-sharing site that allows users to share

pictures and videos either publicly or privately on the app. Journalist commonly
uses this online platform.

c. Twitter- is an online news and social networking service where users post and

interact with messages, “tweets,” restricted to 140 characters. Registered users can
post tweets, but those who are unregistered can only read them.

2. Blogging Platforms – Websites like WordPress, Tumblr, and Blogger focus on content
and design. It typically looks like a newsletter where you are given options to change the
design to your liking. Though you can manipulate the design, social media platform’s

2
popularity is still unrivaled. The amount of customization in blogs is also unrivaled
depending on the content management system implemented by the provider. (note: it has
high customization, popularity depends to the user to maximize the use of blogs.)

4. Content management System (CMS) - is a computer application (sometimes online or

browser-based) that allows you to publish, edit and manipulate, organize and delete web
content. CMS is used in blogs, news websites, and shopping.

TECHNIQUES

A. LESSON OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students are able to:
1. create a web page using Microsoft word;

B. LESSON OUTLINE:
5.1 Web page creation using template
5.2 Web page design using an online WYIWYG platform

C. LESSON CONTENT:

WEBPAGE CREATION USING TEMPLATE

How is basic? Imagine the way our ancestors do fishing. They used fishing rod or spear
to catch a fish. Huge companies rule the fishing industry with their huge fishing vessels with
huge nets to catch fish by the truckload. Unfortunately, those fishing vessels are not affordable
so we will be still using our fishing rod or spear.
However, that is not the case in web page creation. First of all, the internet is free.
Secondly, it is of free courtesy of many website providers that provide basic functionalities for
our website to function. Back in the day, you actually have to learn the HTML (Hypertext
Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) to be able to create a descent website.
Definition of the acronym WYSIWYG
WYSIWYG is the acronym for what you see is what you get. This means that whatever
you type, insert, draw, place, rearrange and everything you do on page is what audience will see.
Lie using the Microsoft Word, WYSIWYG, shows and prints whatever you type on screen.
Ways of Accessing the Web:

 Dial-up connection – is established when two or more communication devices use a

public switched telephone network (PSTN) to connect to an Internet service provider
(ISP).
 DSL provides high-speed networking over ordinary phone lines using broadband
modem technology. The technology behind DSL enables Internet and telephone service
to work over the same phone line without requiring customers to disconnect either their
voice or Internet connections.
 Cable internet uses the existing lines for your cable TV to provide fast, reliable service,
meaning you can browse the web and watch your favorite TV shows at the same time, all
over a single cable and through a single provider.
 Wireless Internet enables wireless connectivity to the Internet via radio waves rather than
wires on a person’s home computer, laptop, smartphone or similar mobile device.

 A Dedicated line is a telecommunications path between two points that is available 24

hours a day for use by a designated user (individual or company). It is not shared in
common among multiple users as dial-up lines are. A dedicated line can be a physical

12
path owned by the user or rented from a telephone company; in which case it is called
a leased line.
Others Ways to Create a Website
As a mention earlier, people use HTML codes to create page CSS codes to design them.
If you have taken up these coding skills before, it will help you in creating pages using
WYSIWYG. If you have not, WYSIWYG is designed for anyone who has not or does not have
prior coding skills.
Creating a Website using Microsoft Word
1. Open Microsoft Word
2. Type anything on the page like ‘’Welcome to my Website’’
3. Click on File > Save As> Browser
4. On the Save As dialog box, locate your activities folder and create a new folder named’’
Sample Webpage’’.
5. Specify the Filename’’ Sample Web page’’.
6. On the Save As type, Select ‘’Web Page (*.htm, *.html)’’.
7. Click the Change Title button.
8. Input the title as seen below, then click OK then Save.
9. Check the files on your Sample Web page folder. you will see a new folder generated
including your htm. or html file.
10. Open the Sample Web page.htm file and you will see that you just created a web page
using MS Word.
Tip: any file inside the Sample Web Page files folder is generated by MS Word.
These are the files that make HTML files display visual elements correctly.
You have just created a web page using Microsoft Word – a technique you can also use
using Microsoft Excel. These office applications can be used as WUSIWYG platform. The next
step is uploading these files to a web server. However, we will skip that step because we are
going to use a much easier approach in creating website. We are going to use an online
application that is actually to design to create website.

C. LESSON CONTENT

TEAM STRUCTURE AND DYNAMIC FOR ICT CONTENT

Web Portal- A web portal is a website that contains information from different sources and
places them in a one location in a uniform way. An example of a web portal is Google.
   Top 10 Web Portals
Myspace
 Baidu
 Wikipedia
 Blogger
 MSN
 Facebook
 YouTube
 Yahoo
 Google

 Portlet- Interactive elements that gives information to the user.

 Online Collaboration- Simply put, online collaboration lets a group of people work
together in real-time over the internet

 Web Conference- provides live audio/video communication between two or more

locations to conduct meetings, training, or presentations via the Internet.

 The difference between Online Collaboration and Web conference is that Online
collaboration is sharing information to each other to come with a way to achieve the
group’s goal. While in Web Conference is more like a meeting to discuss about a certain
topic.

 Encryption- additional layer of security that makes content unreadable for people with
malicious intent.

 SSL (Secure Socket Layer)- is the standard security technology for establishing an
encrypted link between a web server and a browser.

Online Collaborative tools

A collaboration tool helps people to collaborate. The purpose of a collaboration tool is to

support a group of two or more individuals to accomplish a common goal or objective.[1]
Collaboration tools can be either of a non-technological nature such as paper, flipcharts, post-it
notes or whiteboards. They can also include software tools and applications such as collaborative
software.

22
Three aspects of collaboration: communication, coordination and cooperation can be used
to categorize collaboration tools.

1. Communication – Communication tools provide exchange of information

between individuals
a) E-Mail – The invention of email as a collaboration tool changed the way we used to
communicate in the workplace. It is the easiest method to make contact within an
organization and is well established. Especially for organizing daily correspondence,
email can reach various people with just one click.

Although email is still the most common used tool in communication collaboration it is
not very efficient on a big scale and other forms of communication seem to take over.
Besides its flexibility it is not very good for group conversations as they grow too fast.
[citation needed] There is no way to be sure that a person has the latest version of a
document that has been sent to them and it is impossible to always track via their email
what tasks need to be done and by which deadline.[12] As Cisco states in their Cisco
Blog about the “Future of Email”, emails “will improve productivity by organizing your
data for you” [13] and try to bring more transparency in their work with email.

b) Voicemail – Voicemail as a collaboration tool is more and more integrated in services

such as Google Voice. As pointed out in an IBM future scenario the role of voicemail
could be that of what email is for us today.

c) Instant messaging (IM) – Through instant messaging as a collaboration tool we are

able to reach people within an organization in real-time. In the future instant
messaging is not a stand-alone software anymore, but very well integrated in bigger
solutions such as Unified Communication.

d) VoIP (voice over IP) / video call – Voice over IP as a collaboration tool has quickly
gained popularity among companies and is part of their communication portfolio. As
a report from Eclipse Telecom is pointing out, the VoIP is moving towards the state
to totally replace our telephones in our offices and also integrate in existing
collaboration service environments.

2. Coordination – Coordination is defined as “the deliberate and orderly alignment or

adjustment of partners’ actions to achieve jointly determined goals”. Collaboration tools
supporting this are the ones who allow a person to set up group activities, schedules and
deliverables.

a) Online Calendars – Online calendars are part of professional behavior at work and
fully integrated in other systems. As a research paper from University of Bath
explains, online calendars could in the future be much closely linked to other data
such as social media and have even a larger effect.

b) Time trackers – Time trackers are especially used to measure the performance of
employees. Its effect on productivity is discussed as being controversial.

c) Spreadsheets – Spreadsheets are like emails very popular within the corporate
environment and as a collaboration tool essential for financial analysis or modelling.
Although very popular, several studies found out that many spreadsheets contain
inaccurate data and are therefore inefficient.
3. Cooperation – Cooperation tools allow groups to have real-time discussions and to shape an
idea or thought together. Trends in terms of collaboration target on helping to maintain the
“main idea” within big organizations and make connections visible. Also, the idea of
bringing people who are not working in a company on a regular basis into the organization
and make use of their knowledge.

23
a) Video conferencing – In most cases video conferencing is part of the overall
communication and collaboration strategy of organizations. Especially now when all
services are cloud-based and therefore implementation costs became more affordable.
The long-term vision for video conferencing lies in the correct usage of computer
processing power, data storage or mobile bandwidth speeds to further decrease the
obstacles of collaboration
