ADVANCE MATHEMATICS 6
Learning Competencies
The learner:
estimates the square root of a whole number to the nearest hundredth;
writes numbers in scientific notation and vice versa; and
represents real-life situations and solves problems involving real numbers.
Overview Trying to take the square root of a number that is not a perfect square? Think you need a calculator? Think
again!
Scientists deal with extremely large and extremely small numbers like the distance from the sun to the nearest star,
Proxima Centauri, is about 24 700 000 000 000 miles and a single streptococcus bacterium is about 0.00000075 meters in
diameter. The large number of zeros in these nuumbers makes them difficult to read and makes them tedious to write.
Scientific notation gives a convenient way to write very large numbers or very small numbers.
Key Question:
How do we estimate the square root of a whole number?
How do we plot irrational number on a number line?
How does standard notation differ from scientific notation?
Let’s Review! Fill in the blanks to make each statement true.
1. A power has two parts, a _______________ and an ____________.
2. The symbol √ ❑ is called a _________________.
3. The number under the radical sign is called the ______________.
4. The inverse of squaring a number is finding its ______________.
a
5. A _______________ number can be expressed in the form .
b
STUDY THIS!
a
An irrational number is a number that cannot be expressed in the form , where a and b are integers, and b is not
b
equal to 0.
SCIENTIFIC NOTATION A number expressed in the form a x 10 n, where a is a decimal number with 1≤ |a| ¿
10, and n is an integer.
Scientific notation is based on powers of 10. Numbers written in scientific notation have two parts:
The first part is a decimal with one non-zero number to the left of the decimal point. The second part is a power of 10.
The decimal number is multiplied by the power of 10. Calculator displays show the decimal part as well as the exponent but
omit the symbol for multiplication and the base 10.
PROCEDURE
Changing Decimal Notations to Scientific Notations
1. Place the decimal point after the first non-zero digit.
2. Count the number of places the decimal point is moved, and use that number as the number exponent.
3. If the original number is greater than 10, the exponent is positive. If the original number is between 1 and 10, the exponent
is zero.
4. If the original number is between 0 and 1, the exponent is negative.
STUDY THIS!
The number 43.5 × 10-8 is not in scientific notation because 43.5 is greater than 10. The number 0.435 × 10-8 is also
not in scientific notation because 0.435 is less than 1.
ACTIVITY TIME!
I. Approximate each irrational number to the nearest hundredth.
1. √ 41
2. √ 125
3. √ 27
4. √ 78
5. √ 32
II. Express each in scientific notation.
1. 380 000
2. 7 000 000
3. 0. 0000000456
4. 809 000 000 00
5. 0.0000000000005032
III. Express each in decimal form.
1. 8.4 × 107
2. 5 × 108
3. 6.49 × 10-9
4. 7.002 × 100
5. 9 × 10-11
IV. Fill in the table by writing the number in standard notation or in scientific notation as indicated.
QUANTITY STANDARD NOTATION SCIENTIFIC NOTATION
1. Diameter of Earth 12 700 000 000 m
2. Diameter of the Sun 1.39 × 109 km
3. Length of an Angstrom 0.0000001 mm
4. Approximate age of Earth 4 000 000 000 yr
5. Wavelength of ultraviolet light 1.36 × 10-6 cm

Background Information for the Learners
