Introduction

Caterpillar introduces the first C Series hydraulic excavator,

the 320C. Increased work tool options, improved cycle
times, and ease of operation lead to increased productivity
and lower operating costs on the 320C. This document
compares the Cat 320C to the Komatsu PC200-6.

Cat 320C Specifications

In job study comparisons with the Komatsu PC200-6, the Cat

320C performed substantially better in trenching and truck
loading.
Hard material tests were conducted on a prepared site of
well-compacted, red sandy clay and rock mixture. The
compacted material density was 1780 kg/m3 (3000 lb/yd3).
The buckets used for these tests were similar in capacity
and width. This chart shows how each machine was
equipped.

Cat 320C Trenching

Trenching tests were conducted by digging a single bucket

wide trench 2.5 m (8 ft) deep. Trench volumes were
calculated by measuring trench depth at about 1 m (3 ft)
intervals. Cycle times were timed using a portable computer
and stopwatch. A portable fuel tank was used to measure
fuel consumption.
The Cat 320C outproduced the Komatsu PC200-6 in hard
trenching by 14%. This production advantage was
accomplished through higher payloads and faster cycle
times. Because the material was very well-compacted,
bucket fill factors were relatively low for both machines.
The PC200-6 has a slightly higher fuel consumption. The
PC200-6's higher fuel consumption combined with the
higher productivity achieved by the 320C, resulted in a 17%
fuel efficiency advantage for the 320C.

Cat 320C Truck Loading

Truck loading tests were conducted by loading 11 mt on-

highway trucks at the same level and at a 90-degree swing
angle. Each truck load was timed with a portable computer
and stopwatch, and weighed on electronic scales.
The Cat 320C was 15% more productive than the Komatsu
PC200-6. Although the 320C carried slightly lower payload,
the faster cycle times gave the 320C a substantial
advantage against the PC200-6. The PC200-6's higher hourly
fuel consumption combined with the higher productivity
achieved by the 320C, resulted in a 17% fuel efficiency
advantage for the 320C.
