Sneak Peak

Is there a need to borrow information from different sources when you

write a research paper? What do you think?

In writing a research paper, one borrows a certain amount of

information from different sources. When doing so, you have to show
respect for intellectual property rights by citing or documenting sources. You
acknowledge and give credit to the author by preparing a bibliography.

Are you ready for more?

A series of activities are provided in this material to help you

understand and apply the proper way of acknowledging sources through
bibliography writing. To verify your learning, a test, for you to answer, is also
included. Furthermore, enrichment activities are also provided to enhance
your knowledge.

So what are you waiting for? Let us start your exciting journey
towards learning the art of bibliography writing!

Acknowledge sources by preparing a bibliography. (EN10SS-IIIf-1.6.3)

1. Identify the different parts or details in a bibliography entry.

2. Arrange the details of a set of given references into its correct
bibliography format.
3. Prepare a bibliography for a set of given references.

1
DID YOU KNOW?

A bibliography contains a list of books or articles, or both,

relating to a particular subject. In a research paper, a bibliography is
an alphabetical list, sometimes grouped into categories, containing
the names of all works quoted from or generally used in its
preparation. Every formally prepared research paper should contain
a bibliography placed at the end and begun on a separate page.

Citing your sources of information allows readers of your

research to locate a source if they want to read its entirety. Also, with
the sources listed, plagiarism would be avoided.

Here are the standard formats and examples for basic

bibliographic entries following the American Psychological
Association (APA) style which is most commonly used to cite
sources within the social sciences.

BOOKS
FORMAT:
Author’s Last Name, First Initial. (Year of Publication).
Book title. City of publication: Publisher.

EXAMPLES:
Boorstin, D. (1992). The creators: A history of the heroes of the
imagination. New York: Random House.

Nicol, A. M., & Pexman, P. M. (1999). Presenting your findings: A

practical guide for creating tables. Washington, DC:

American Psychological Association.

2
PERIODICALS
FORMAT:
Author's last name, first initial. (Publication date). Title of Article. Title
of Periodical, volume number (issue number if available),
inclusive pages.

EXAMPLES:
Kalette, D. (1986, July 21). California town counts town to big
quake. USA Today, 9, p. A1.

Scruton, R. (1996). The eclipse of listening. The New Criterion, 15 (3),

5-13.

ELECTRONIC SOURCES
FORMAT:
Online periodical:
Author's name. (Date of publication). Title of article. Title of Online
Periodical, volume number. Retrieved month, day, year,
from full URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
Online document:
Author's name. (Date of publication). Title of work. Retrieved month
day, year, from full URL

EXAMPLES:
Devitt, T. (2001, August 2). Lightning injures four at music
festival. The Why? Files. Retrieved January 23, 2002,
from http://whyfiles.org/137lightning/index.html

You will be guided all throughout the tasks.

Are you ready? Great! Have fun!

Basic Rules in Bibliography Writing
 Your reference list should appear at the end of your paper.

 Your references should begin on a new page separate

from the text of the essay; label this page “References”
centered at the top of the page (do NOT boldface, underline, or use quotation
marks for the title). All text should be double-spaced just like the rest of your
essay.

 All lines after the first line of each entry in your reference list should be indented
one-half inch from the left margin. This is called hanging indentation.

 Author’s names are inverted (last name first); give the last name and initials for all
authors of a particular work for up to and including seven authors. If the work has
more than seven authors, list the first six authors and then use ellipses after the
sixth author’s name. After the ellipses, list the last author’s name of the work.

 Reference list entries should be alphabetized by the last name of the first author
of each work.

 For multiple articles by the same author, or authors listed in the same order, list
the entries in chronological order, from the earliest to most recent.

 Present the journal title in full.

 Maintain the punctuation and capitalization that is used by the journal in its title.

 Capitalize all major words in journal titles.

 When referring to books, chapters, articles, or Web pages, capitalize only the first
letter of the first word of a title and subtitle, the first word after a colon or a dash in
the title, and proper nouns. Do not capitalize the first letter of the second word in
a hyphenated compound word.

 Italicize titles of longer works such as book and journals.

11
 Do not italicize, underline, or put quotes around the titles of shorter works such
as journal articles or essays in edited collections.
