 Chalks or Markers  Duster  CSS Elementary Standard Computer for class 7
Background: The purpose of this unit is to help the students to highlight the basic concept of computer.
Students will have prior knowledge about a computer.
Introduction:
 Ask a student to describe basic concept of computer system.
 Explain to students that there are two types of Personal Computer (PC) according to their shapes.
Classroom Activity: The teacher will announce that we are going to study the Chapter 1 of CSS
Computer 7 at page # 3 and 4 today. After that announcement, the teacher will write the name of chapter
and the topic on the writing board. The teacher may ask the students about:
 What is computer?
 What do you know about the system unit?
 Do you know how many types of system unit according to their shapes?
After asking these questions and getting the responses from the students, the teacher will tell the
students that all the above questions are studied at this page. The teacher will explain the concept of
system unit, desktop PC and tower PC.
At this the teacher will explain that a System Unit is a boxlike case that houses the computer’s main
hardware components such as, main circuit board, processor, storage devices, memory, power supply,
cooling fan, etc. It is responsible for all events inside the computer. All input and output devices
connects with system unit to work together.
Usually in personal computers, System Unit can be found in two shapes.
Desktop PC: A computer that is flat and usually sits on a desk is known as Desktop PC.
Tower PC: A computer that is upright-it look like someone took a desktop PC and turned it on its side
is known as Tower PC.
Conclusion: After explaining the page # 3 and 4 of the book, the teacher will conclude the session.

part of a computer that can be thought of as the "backbone" of the computer system. All devices are
attached with motherboard. It allows all components of computer to communicate with each other. It has
many sockets into which the Processor, memory (RAM and ROM), cards (sound, graphics, network
interface, etc.) and peripheral devices are connected. It is also called Mainboard/ System board.

6
Teacher Resource Pack Guide Computer 7

Materials required:
 Writing board (Black or White)  Chalks or Markers  Duster
 CSS Elementary Standard Computer for class 7
Introduction: 5 minutes
 Ask a student to describe basic concept of processor.
 Explain to students that today we will be learning about the Control Unit and Arithmetic & Logic Unit.
Class Activity:
The teacher will revise the last day work in 5 minutes and may ask some students about the last
day lecture. The teacher will announce that today we will study and understand the Chapter 1 of CSS
Computer 7 on page # 5 and 6. After that announcement, the teacher will write the name of chapter and
the topic on the writing board. The teacher will do the reading and explanation about the topic.
At this the teacher will explain that a processor is also called Central Processing Unit (CPU), is like the
brain of the computer. A Processor is generally a 2 inch ceramic square with a silicon chip located
inside. The chip is usually about the size of a thumbnail. It consists of Control Unit (CU) and Arithmetic
& Logic Unit (ALU).The Control Unit (CU) controls the operations of all the different parts of a
computer. It regulates the step-by-step operation of all the parts of a computer. The Arithmetic logic unit
(ALU) is responsible for performing calculations, making comparison and processing data into
information. In a human body, all major decisions are taken by the brain and the other parts of the body
function as directed by the brain. Similarly, in a computer system, all major calculations and
comparisons are made inside the CPU and it activates and controls the operations of other units like
Hard disk, Printer etc. of a computer system.
Control Unit
The Control Unit controls, co-ordinate and directs all the operations performed by the computer. It
regulates the step-by-step operation of all the parts of a computer. It is the "brain within the brain", as it
controls what happens inside the processor, which in turn controls the rest of the computer.
Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU)
All arithmetic (mathematical) and logical (decision making) activities performed in arithmetic and logic
unit. ALU further has two parts, AU (Arithmetic Unit) and LU (Logic Unit).
Arithmetic means all sorts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
For example: 6 + 5 = 11 or 12 – 10 = 2
The logical operations performed in this unit make it possible for computer to make decisions by
comparing one item with the other and give answer in the form of True or False.

7
Teacher Resource Pack Guide Computer 7

For example:
6+5=8 (False) or 7 – 3 = 4 (True)
9 > 15 (False) or 6 > 2 (True)
Conclusion: 5 minutes
The teacher will explain and differentiate the control unit and ALU, and will conclude the session.
 A few students will revise the given text in correct pronunciation.
 The teacher will correct the mistakes of the students (if any).
 The teacher will write the difficult words of the topic on the board and explain these words to the
students.
Lesson 4
Teaching objectives:
 To know about the memory.
 To recognize and explain RAM and ROM.
Key vocabulary: Instruction, erased, switched-off, binary system, megabyte, volatile, non-volatile
Materials required:
 Writing board (Black or White)  Chalks or Markers  Duster
 CSS Elementary Standard Computer for class 7
Introduction: 5 minutes
 Ask a student to describe the concept of memory.
Class Activity:
The teacher will revise the last day work in 5 minutes and may ask some students about the last
day lecture. The teacher will announce that today we will study and understand the Chapter 1 of CSS
Computer 7 on page # 6-7. After that announcement, the teacher will write the name of chapter and the
topic on the writing board. The teacher will do the reading and explanation about the topic.
At this the teacher will explain that a memory is used to store data and programs. Memory is best
storage part to the computer users to save data, information and programs etc. The data and instructions
that are entered into the computer system through input units have to be stored inside the computer
before the actual processing starts. It is the working space of the computer.
Memory has two types:
I. RAM (Random Access Memory):
RAM is used to store data and instructions that are currently being processed by a computer’s CPU. It is
attached to the motherboard. Data is temporarily stored in the RAM till it is saved to the hard disk. The
data in RAM is erased when power is switched off that’s why RAM is known as volatile memory.
RAM (Random Access Memory) is also called main memory. RAM is measured in megabytes (MB) or

8
Teacher Resource Pack Guide Computer 7

gigabytes (GB). A bit is the smallest unit of data in computer processing. It represents a digit in the
binary system. A bit is the smallest unit of storage.

A bit may be 0 or 1. One byte is made up of 8 bits.

II. ROM (Read Only Memory):
ROM is a permanent or non-volatile memory. Once data has been written onto a ROM it cannot be
removed even the computer is switched-off. It contains start up instruction of the computer and
information about its hardware devices. It is fixed on motherboard.
RAM ROM
Random Access Memory. Read Only Memory.
It is Volatile or temporary memory. It is Non Volatile or permanent memory.
Fast memory. Slow memory.
Conclusion: 5 minutes

the last day lecture. The teacher will announce that today we will study and understand the Chapter 1 of
CSS Computer 7 on page # 7-8. After that announcement, the teacher will write the name of chapter and
the topic on the writing board. The teacher will do the reading and explanation about the topic.
At this the teacher will explain that an expansion card (expansion board) is a small circuit board that is
used to connect devices such as modems, sound cards, graphics cards, and network interface cards to the
computer. Basic purpose of an expansion card is to enhance the capability of the computer and/or
provide connections to peripherals. There are four major types of expansion cards.
