I. Objective: At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

Introduce POETRY [ˈpōətrē]


• literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems
collectively or as a genre of literature. (Oxford Dictionaries)
• literature that evokes a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience or a specific emotional response through language chosen
and arranged for its meaning, sound, and rhythm
ELEMENTS OF POETRY can be defined as a set of instruments used to create a poem. Many of these were created thousands of years ago
and have been linked to ancient storytelling. They help bring imagery and emotion to poetry, stories, and dramas.

TONE or MOOD refers to the writer's attitude towards the subject of a literary work as indicated in the work itself. One way to think about tone
in poetry is to consider the speaker's literal "tone of voice": just as with tone of voice, a poem's tone may indicate an attitude of joy, sadness,
solemnity, silliness, frustration, anger, puzzlement, etc.

b. Activity

Directions: The students will be reading the poem “If I can stop one heart from breaking” by Emily Dickenson. They are going to
identify the tone or mood of the poem.

c. Abstraction

“IF I CAN STOP ONE HEART FROM BREAKING” BY EMILY DICKENSON is consist of two stanzas, a quatrain and a tercet. The first stanza
has the rhyme scheme of (abab) and the second stanza has (bbb).
The theme of the poem can be seen in the first stanza itself. It is about helping someone and doing so, a person cannot live in vain.
The mood of this poem is SAD but strong because this is about the speaker wanting to help someone and shall not live in vain, she wants to
be useful, she is making a decision that she will help and nothing can stop her.
The tone of this poem is desperate and affectionate because the speaker really wanted to help others.
