A barometer is a scientific instrument that is used to measure air pressure in a certain


environment. Pressure tendency can forecast short-term changes in the weather. Many
measurements of air pressure are used within surface weather analysis to help find surface troughs,
pressure systems and frontal boundaries.
Advantages:
In fact, an aneroid barometer is found to be less accurate when compared with a
mercury barometer. But the advantage in an aneroid barometer is the quick and easy handling

graduations. As a result, the graduation scale can be very precise--down to a hundredth of an inch
accuracy.

Advantages of mercury barometer:


 It is the heaviest liquid. Therefore it rises to a height of only 76 cm to balance the atmospheric
pressure. 2) It gives more accurate reading as it does not stick to the glass. 3) It is opaque and
shiny and hence can be seen easily through glass.

measurements
3. Mercury hazard, as some older products may contain mercury in the thermometer
components of the instrument
4. Potentially poor resolution, though digital psychrometers offer better resolution than
analog units
