INTRODUCTION
The TechWest TH6 Hydraulic Set Production Packer is a short, economical packer
for low to medium pressure applications. The packer features no downward mandrel
movement during setting, permitting for use in stacked applications and
simultaneous setting. The TH6 packer is ideally suited for running below dual string
packers, and may be set after the well has been flanged up.
The TH6 packer features adjustable straight pull release and large equalizing ports
which open above the elements to wash debris above the packer to aid in retrieval.
The internal lock mandrel contains the pack off force which is not transmitted to the
tubing string, eliminating any loads on the release screws. This makes retrieval easy
even with maximum differential on the packer. The short overall length of the packer
makes it ideal for tight doglegs in the well.

PRE-INSTALLATION INSPECTION
TechWest ships tools with end connections made up hand-tight, indicated by labeled tape. Prior to running
a tool, properly tighten connections to the correct API torque value and inspect to ensure that parts have
not been damaged during shipping. TechWest recommends disassembly and inspection of the tool unless
otherwise stated.
Before re-running a tool, TechWest recommends disassembly, inspection, cleaning of all parts and
replacing all seals, elements, o-rings and shear screws.
Contact TechWest Sales for redress kits and other replacement parts.
STORAGE
For the best results, all tools should be stored vertically in an enclosed environment with static temperature
and humidity. The tool should not be exposed to water, condensation or direct sunlight to the elements.
Low alloy carbon steel tools which may corrode due to atmospheric moisture are supplied with a surface
treatment that enhances corrosion and galling resistance. High alloy and Nickel based tools are featured
with anti-galling coating (or surface treatment) on threads and critical areas.
Protect all elements and slips from incurring possible physical damage.
RUNNING PROCEDURE
The packer must be set in clean tubing and a casing scrapper run (TW Product No. 10-010) is
recommended to ensure proper packer setting.
In the 5’’ and 7’’ tools the brass screws in the lock ring housing determine the pressure that begins to set
the packer. In many cases, the starting set pressure should be set at 1500-1700 psi.
In the 9 5/8’’ tool there are two sets of shear screws that set packer. The brass screws in the lock ring
housing determine the pressure that begins to set the slips and the shear screws in the shear sub
determine the pressure at which the elements begin to set. The shear pressure of the slips (in the lock
ring housing) should be set lower than the shear pressure of the elements (in the shear sub) allowing the
slips to engage with the casing prior to energizing of the elements.

The screws at the top of the packer determine the force to shear release the packer. Remove screws if
necessary if a lower shear to release force is warranted and record in the daily Tour reports. See Releasing
Procedure for more details.
Run in the hole to setting depth. Running speed should not exceed 90 ft/min to avoid seal wash. The TH6
Packer is set by temporarily plugging the tubing string below the packer and applying pressure inside.
The tubing may be plugged using a TechWest Model A Pump Out Plug (Product No. 20-053), a
TechWest Hydro Trip Sub (Product No. 20-069), landing a wireline retrievable plug/dart into a profile
nipple/PSN, or by setting a TechWest WR bridge plug (Product No.10-049).
Gradually increase tubing pressure up to at least 1000 psi above calculated shear pressure. Hold for 15
minutes to allow the packing elements to take shape. The packer should now be set and sealed. Pressure
test the packer. If there is communication across the packer, increase the setting pressure by another 500
psi, hold for 15 minutes, and pressure test again. Bleed off and remove the tubing plug, or increase
pressure to pump out a shear out device as required.
When TH6 (and/or TH7) is ran stacked in series, the packers may be set either simultaneously, or in
sequence by adjusting the setting shear values of each packer. The mandrel does not move during setting
of the packer, therefore sequential setting is not a requirement.

RELEASING PROCEDURE
The TH6 packer is released by straight pickup on the tubing string. Tension force required to release the
packer is easily adjusted prior to running in. Once packer is released, allow a few minutes for the packing
elements to relax prior to pulling the packer so that they elements will not swab the well. Pick up slowly
for the first few stands to make sure the packer is fully released.
When ran in stacked completions, the use of a TechWest Releasing Sub (Product 20-336) is
recommended. The Releasing Sub enables transfer of tension to the uppermost set packer, allowing each
packer to be released individually, as opposed to attempting to release the packers simultaneously.
Note: The pack off force from the setting piston is isolated from the shear to release screws, so there
is no compensation for pressure differential

OPERATION PROCEDURE
The TH-6 employs a lock mandrel to trap pack off forces independent of the inner mandrel, which makes
up to the production string. The lock mandrel isolates the pack off forces from the shear release screws,
allowing low shear-to-release forces regardless of pressure differential.
The overlapping piston assembly, located between the packing elements and slips permit the packer to set
without downward mandrel movement. Applied pressure is conveyed to the piston through the bypass slots
in the mandrel and the port in the lock mandrel. As pressure is applied, the piston moves upward, packing
off the elements against the shear sub. Likewise, the lower cone moves down which forces the slips outward
against the casing wall.
The packer is released with straight pull on the tubing string. Tension is pulled to shear the release screws.
The mandrel travels upward, which removes the support under the collet on the lock mandrel. The shoulder
on the mandrel stops on the lock mandrel, which lifts the lock mandrel, allowing the lower cone to fall away.
The slips and elements move downward, unsetting the packer.
TEST PROCEDURE
The packer should be pressure tested in the shop prior to running in the well. Caution must be taken to
ensure that the brass shear screws are not overloaded due to internal tubing pressure. This will cause the
packer to set.
If the brass shear screws are installed in the packer, the maximum safe testing pressure is 50% of the
setting pressure of the number of shear screws installed. Count the number of brass screws installed and
determine the setting pressure based on the chart above. Do not exceed half of the setting pressure from
the chart.
If higher pressure is needed, remove the brass shear screws and replace them with 5/16-24 UNF socket
head set screws that are at least 1/2" (13 mm) long and made from Grade 5 or better steel. Maximum safe
test pressure should not exceed 3000 psi.
After testing, bleed off pressure and remove set screws. Reinstall brass shear screws.
