1. Meaning of Communication
Communication (from Latin communicare, meaning "to share") is the act of conveying
meanings from one entity or group to another through the use of mutually understood signs, symbols,
and semoitic rules.
Communication is thus a process by which meaning is assigned and conveyed in an attempt to
create shared understanding. Gregory Bateson called it "the replication of tautologies in the
universe. This process, which requires a vast repertoire of skills in interpersonal processing, listening,
observing, speaking, questioning, analyzing, gestures, and evaluating
enables collaboration and cooperation.

Definition of Communication
The act or process of communicating; fact of being communicated.
The imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs.
something imparted, interchanged, or transmitted

Communication, means of sending messages, orders,including telephone, telegraph, radio, and
television.

2. Meaning of Purposive Communication

Purposive Communication is about writing, speaking, and presenting to different audiences for
various purposes.
It is also a three unit course that develop students communicative competence and enhances
their cultural and intercultural awareness through multimodal task that provide them
opportunities for communicating effectively and appropriately to a multicultural audience in a
local and global context. It equip students with tools for critical evaluation of a variety of text
and focuses on the power of language and the impact of images to emphasize the importance
of conveying messages responsively.

Definition of Purposive Communication

Writing, speaking and presenting to different audiences and for varied purposes. The five skills
of communication (listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing) are studied and simulated in
advanced academic settings, such as conversing intelligently on a subject of import ,reporting on
group work and/or assignments, writing and delivering a formal speech, writing minutes of meetings
and similar documents, preparing a research or technical paper, and making an audio-visual or web-
based presentation.
3. Importance of Purposive Communication in terms of
a. Workplace

Communication is one of the most important aspects of our jobs. When we discuss
communication it is easy to focus on concerns about selecting the right communication technology or
being aware of our body language, but it is the outcome of our message that can help us determine
the success of our communication. Purposeful communication allows leaders to think through the
reason for the communication, the best method of communication, and the eventual resolution of the
discussion.
Leaders fail when they give direction without communication, talk without communicating, or speak
without listening. These are challenges that leaders must face when communicating with their team
and their peers. According to a study of 4,000 people by HR Magazine, 46 percent of employees
were unsure of what was being asked of them by their line manager when given tasks, and 37
percent experienced this uncertainty between one and three times a day. Leaders must meet the
basic needs of the individual to successfully communicate with their employees. Fortunately, this is
easy to accomplish if you approach the discussion in an open, thoughtful way. The following chart
can help leaders address some of the individual’s concerns.

b. Academic Setting

Communication is a very important factor in any organization to attain success; the good
communication practice is essential to carry out the tasks consistently. However, communication has
a particular importance and necessity for academic institutions to support or improve their
effectiveness and efficiency.
Communication skills are essential for the successful future career of a student. ... Reading,
writing and listening carefully are the three most important communication skills for students.

4. How purposive communication help me in the practice of my profession?

Purposive communication is far beyond from communicating with a purpose. As an aspiring future
businesswoman purposive communication will play a vital role in the practice of my profession, it will
help me develop the communicative competence that will drive me in becoming an effective
communicator. Noted that persuasion is a must in business industry, one`s must persuade every
potential clients/ customers to make a certain business reach the highest peak. Purposive
communication is not just only important for one person rather it has a significance to everyone, since
everybody communicate in order to understand and to be understood.
