Conventional
Photoelectric Smoke Detector
Technical Manual
Note
i Do not install, operate, and maintain this product before fully reading this
manual.
1 Introduction
Telefire's TFO-480 is an advanced conventional photoelectric smoke detector that offers
the following advantages:
• It is considered “green” (environment friendly) as it does not contain radioactive
materials.
• The TFO-480's microprocessor provides advantages usually available only in more
costly analog systems.
• The TFO-480's powerful microprocessor performs signal processing and enables
precise control of the photoelectric chamber.
• The TFO-480 offers a high level of noise immunity and performs drift compensation
in order to overcome environmental changes and dust accumulation in the chamber.
• The TFO-480 detector excels in sensing smoldering smoke and smoke from burning
of various materials.
The detector consists of a vented chamber (labyrinth), an infra-red transmitter and a
receiver that detects light scattering from the smoke particles in the chamber.
The detector contains an alarm LED viewable from 360°. This LED blinks during normal
operation and is latched on during an alarm.
2 Compatibility
2.1 Control Panels
The TFO-480 is compatible with the following control panels:
• All TSA-1000 models
• TSA-1000X
• TSA-200 and TSA-200X
• All GSA-1000 models
• GSA-2B
The TFO-480 is compatible with Telefire's ADR-3000 Analog Addressable Control Panel
when used with an ADR-812 or ADR-818 Input module.
2.2 Bases
The TFO-480 is compatible with Telefire's TFB-180 Standard Detector Base.
Warning
! Do not connect these detectors to control panels made by
manufacturers other than Telefire.

3 Installation
Planning of quantity and location of detectors shall be done according to the local codes
and regulations and in accordance to the planning consultant's requirements.
3.2 Installation
3.2.1 Control Panel Configuration (TSA-1000 Only)
Ensure that the input zone is configured as type d (standard initiating device zone).
Please refer to the TSA-1000 technical manual for a detailed description of programming
and configuration.
3.2.2 Location
The TFO-480 is designed to protect indoor fire risk areas, except environments where
smoke, steam, dust, or corrosive gasses are present under normal conditions.
Photoelectric smoke detectors should be used for detecting smoldering fires in corridors
and along escape routes, wood- or paper stores, electric cabinets, etc., They should not
be used in steamy, dusty, or smoky areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, saunas,
laundries, etc.
Observe NFPA 72 guidelines and local fire codes when installing the TFO-480.
When installing a TFO-480 smoke detector on a slanted (up to 45°) ceiling that allows
free flow of smoke (i.e., there are no beams or other obstacles) the detector should be
installed parallel to the flow line of the ceiling, and not horizontally. For ceilings with
impediments to free smoke flow please refer to the relevant local fire code standard.
Use only Telefire's TFB-180 Standard Detector Base.
For remote signaling use only Telefire's TFL-1N Auxiliary Signaling Indicator for
Conventional Detectors.
UL UL Requirement
Smoke detectors are not to be used with detector guards unless the
combination has been evaluated and found suitable for that purpose.

4 Maintenance
4.1 Periodic Testing
Fire alarm systems should be checked periodically. Please refer to NFPA and local fire
codes to determine service frequency.
Use the control panel’s Walk Test mode to perform automatic reset. Please refer to the
control panel’s manual for additional details on how to perform Walk Test.
Note
i Detectors connected to GSA-1000 or GSA-2B and detectors connected to
analog addressable control panels via input modules should be tested on a
time-based schedule (see section Error! Reference source not found. on
page 4).
Detectors connected to a TSA-1000, TSA-1000X, TSA-200 or TSA-200X
need only be cleaned when the control panel alerts a “Maintenance Alarm”.
2. The detector's LED should latch on and the detector will alert the control panel.

3. Once the detector is in alarm mode, it keeps an alarm condition until reset by
disconnecting the detectors power for a few seconds. Press the Reset key at the
control panel's keyboard to reset the detector. Control panels that have a “walk
test” function can reset a tested detector automatically if set to operate in walk test
mode. Please refer to the appropriate control panel manual for instructions on how
to conduct a walk test.
Note
i Testing detectors with an aerosol spray may cause increased contamination
in the labyrinth chamber due to accumulation of oil residue and dust. This
accumulation may shorten the detectors life-span and require it to be sent to
the factory for cleaning.
