REPORT TO: REPORT FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Steering Committee Assistant Director of HR Workforce Development 7th April 2008 Equality Awareness Sessions

FOR: Information and discussion _________________________________________________________ 1. 1.1 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this report is to provide the Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Steering Committee members with an up-date on routine collection of data on employees who attended Equality Awareness Sessions held from October 2007 February 2008. The Trust has a legal obligation to outlaw discrimination, promote equality of opportunities in its employment and service provisions, by providing equality training for its employees and raising their awareness on issues such as equality, diversity and human rights. RECOMMENDATIONS The Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Steering Committee is asked to discuss and note the contents of the report for action. BACKGROUND Out of 4091 staff head count in post as at 29 th February 2008, a total of 2091 attendance has been recorded for Equality sessions on the Trusts Oracle Learning Management Systems. Prior to October 2007, a total of 40 staff were trained on Equality, representing less than 1% of overall staff. This led to a review and one hour mandatory sessions were set up for all employees. The uptake has been increasing steadily with 7.3% of staff recorded to have attended all the sessions so far. The Human Rights session is the most popular at 503 attendances representing 12.30% of staff and the session least attended is the Age Equality session at 4.69%. The Post-Graduate Centre has the highest rate of staff attendance for all the sessions at 67.86%.

4.0 CONCLUSION 4.1 To increase training up-take within all the Equality Awareness sessions, various approaches are being considered. This ranges from e-learning to targeting audit days within Directorates and on-going sessions delivered by an external trainer. 4.2 The Research and Education Committee will also receive the report for discussion as part of the action plan for mandatory training in the Trust for 2008/09 and the report will be discussed with lead managers in the Directorates to identify how to achieve a balance between staff release, providing cover for the services, and increasing attendance at the sessions. 4.3 All line managers will be advised to have a 12 month plan in place as part of their annual staff appraisal meetings to monitor staff attendance and where staff did not attend they will need to discuss the reasons and plan for staff to be re-booked.
