    HOW TO TEST STUDENTS VOCABULARIES

    There are many ways to test students vocabularies. Here, weve got some ways that may be added based on our experiences in teaching and learning English.

    A. MATCHING
    There are several kinds of matching: 1. Matching the synonym In this type of matching, students must match the similar meaning words. For instance, we have this test: MATCH THESE FOLLOWING WORDS INTO ITS SYNONIMS 1. Consciousness 2. Desperately 3. Floating 4. Life jacket 5. Incredible a. Despondently b. Unbelievable c. Drifting d. Awareness e. Life vest

    2. Matching the antonym In this type of matching, students must match two groups of words which have opposite meanings. For instance, we have this test: MATCH THESE FOLLOWING WORDS INTO ITS ANTONYM 1. Dead 2. Man 3. Big 4. Better 5. Worst a. Small b. Worse c. Alive d. Best e. Woman

    3. Matching the translations

    In this type of test, students must match two groups of words to its translation, whether Indonesian to English or vice versa. For instance: 1. Book 2. Axe 3. Sehat 4. Kelinci 5. Tikus a. Rat b. Hare c. Kitab d. Health e. Kapak

    4. Matching the definitions In this type of matching, students have to match the words to its definitions or vice versa. For instance: 1. Goblin 2. a small orange or red fish a. goldfish b. a small ugly creature that likes to trick people or cause trouble

    5. Matching the pictures In this type of matching, students have to match the pictures to its words or vice versa. For instance:

    B. REARRANGE THE LETTERS


    In this type of test, students must rearrange the random letters into good English words. Sometimes, we can add the pictures to ease the students, or the students match the words to the pictures all at once. For instance, we have this test:

    C. CROSSWORD
    In this kind of test, students have to fit words across and downwards into spaces with numbers in a square diagram. They find the words by solving clues. For instance:

    Downwards: 1. an object in the shape of a circle, usually made of gold and precious stones, that a king or queen wears on his or her head on official occasions. Across:

    1. the ghost of a person that is seen a short time before or after that person dies.

    D. MULTIPLE CHOICE
    Students must choose the correct answers. For instance: 1. 2. 3. twelve = .. a. 12 b. 20 c. 2 The plural of woman is .. a. women b. womens c. womans .. King is a married woman. a. Mr. b. Mrs. c. Miss.

    E. FILLING / COMPLETING
    In this kind of the test, students have to fill the blanks as the orders. For instance: Complete the nationalities or the countries Nationalities Countries Argentina British Greece Nationalities Polish Thai Countries Switzerland Dutch Nationalities French Countries Portugal

    Change into plural / singular form 1. ox 2. .. 3. dwarf 4. .. 5. zoo .. knives .. tomatoes ..

    F. MISSING LETTERS Students have to complete the letters to appropriate words. Examples: 1. umb _ _ lla 2. c _ pb _ ard 3. c _ oc _ di _ e

    G. WORD-SEARCH
    In this kind of the test, students must find certain words. For instance: Find five fruits and vegetables!

    HOW TO SCORE
    Vocabulary test is objective test, so in the scoring system, we use the objective score. The formula is: students total correct answers X total number 100
