While Speak No Evil is not a great film, James McEvoy's performance in it is terrific. He is an outstanding actor and manages to be larger than any role he plays. In this thriller he plays a gregarious, bold, and strong minded Physician who befriends a troubled couple while on vacation. The couple, whose roles are well played, are in the midst of economic and martial troubles that leave them, particularly, vulnerable to a new and exciting acquaintance. The movie is a little frustrating at points, but it works. It is a well scripted, well directed, and will paced thriller. Some parts are no believable, but it is a thriller/horror so we understand that going in.
Saturday Night Live fans will really enjoy this look at the "make or break" first episode of this 50 year old Television iconic program. The heart of the movie is the ninety minutes leading up to the airing of the first episode. It manages to pack a lot of information and bedlam into this period, and it does it really when. The movie gives an insight into Network television of the time and how Saturday Night Live, now a part of the culture, was so anti-establishment. The strength of the movie is the great performances by the terrific actors that portray the real life first season cast, from Chevy Chase to John Belushi. They really nail it. This is a super fun movie. If you re not an SNL fan, it is still a good movie, but may not mean as much.
Full disclosure- I am not a a huge fan of Bill Maher; however, I liked this special a lot. This is a very honest and bold stand up that daringly attacks insanity on the left and right. While he takes on Trump's madness he also takes on the madness that is Woke thinking in the 21st Century. He very intelligently distinguishes Liberalism, a Progressive way of thinking, and Wokeness, a disease of the mind and society. I don't love his delivery, but I do agree with a lot of his messaging. Even on the stuff I don't agree with- who cares- the whole point is that we should have the ability to disagree. His attack on collegiate thought and young people is so on the mark. This is smart thinking and thoughtful provoking.
