Claire Denis is applauding her collaborator Robert Pattinson’s dedicated performance as the Caped Crusader in “The Batman.”
During a discussion with Screen Slate to celebrate the restoration of her 1992 film “Fear, No Die,” Denis was jokingly asked whether she would direct a “Batman” franchise film. Denis instead took the opportunity to praise her “High Life” actor Pattinson for embodying the role in an “intimate and delicate” manner for Matt Reeves’ 2022 film “The Batman.” Pattinson will re-don the mask for the slated 2026 sequel.
“I watched ‘The Batman’ because Robert Pattinson is a friend,” Denis said. “Of course, it’s a lot, a lot, a lot of post-production. A crew of 300. But the work inside, the way Robert thinks about Batman — I like the way he constructed his Batman. It’s the rest of it — the effects, the crowds, the post-production, it’s like two films in one. Kal Penn is detailing how he was up against a “white dude in brown face” for his breakout “Van Wilder” role.
Penn told Rolling Stone in a 20th anniversary piece for 2004 film “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” that a cameo from fellow “Van Wilder” alum Ryan Reynolds helped get “Harold & Kumar” made.
In fact, Reynolds also helped Penn land the “Van Wilder” role to begin with during the final callbacks. The college comedy stars Penn in a supporting role of an Indian exchange student.
“Ryan was incredibly supportive during the audition process for ‘Van Wilder,'” Penn said. “In the final callback, it was between me and a white dude in brown face for the part of an Indian exchange student. He said to me, ‘How do you feel about improv?’ So we improvised the scene, and he was obviously rooting for me to get the job.”

John Cho and Kal Penn are reflecting on how the marketing campaign for “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” back in 2004 “refused” to take race out of it.
The duo star as the titular best friends who set out to fulfill a craving for White Castle burgers while stoned. The 2004 comedy led to two sequels.
“I remember the trailers were all about race, and they should have been about friendship,” Penn told Rolling Stone during a 20th anniversary oral history piece. “The first cut of it mentioned that this movie starred ‘the Asian guy from “American Pie” and that Indian guy from “Van Wilder.”‘ I said, ‘I would love for you to not refer to us with racial signifiers because the movie speaks for itself.'”
Penn continued, “They refused, and instead added the line, ‘From the white guy who directed “Dude, Where’s My Car?”‘ I mean, if you...

Harrison Ford says he is excited to be making his Marvel Cinematic debut as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross/Red Hulk in next year’s “Captain America: Brave New World,” but maybe don’t ask him about any specifics related to the MCU. At this year’s Comic-Con, where Ford was on hand to promote the fourth “Captain America” tentpole, the actor was asked about elements of the MCU’s ever-expanding multiverse and appeared humorously baffled.
“‘Deadpool & Wolverine” set up anchor beings, meaning if they die the universe dies,” ScreenRant told Ford on the Marvel Comic-Con press line. “Who do you think would be the anchor being of 616? The universe you are in.”
“616?” Ford asked back in complete puzzlement. “I am in universe 616? I am out of my orbit!”

Netflix dropped the teaser trailer July 30 for “Spellbound” (streaming November 22), the second animated feature from John Lasseter-led Skydance Animation (which is part of the impending Paramount-Skydance Media merger). The musical fantasy from director Vicky Jenson (“Shrek”) is a modern fairy tale that takes place in the mythical kingdom of Lumbria, where teenage princess Ellian (Rachel Zegler from “West Side Story”) must break the spell that transformed her parents (Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem) into monsters.
Boasting bright, eye-catching animation from Skydance Animation Madrid, the look of Lumbria (production designed by Brett Nystul) was influenced by the iconic architecture of ancient Spain, which was known for its domed rooftops and Moorish arches.
The rest of the voice cast includes John Lithgow (Minister Bolinar), Jenifer Lewis (Minister Nazara Prone), Nathan Lane (Sun Oracle), André De Shields (Moon Oracle), Jordan Fisher, and Tituss Burgess.

2024 has been an extraordinary year for film preservation, with theatrical premieres of new restorations of “The Searchers” and “North by Northwest” unspooling at festivals and repertory houses while pristine new editions of essential films like Michael Powell’s “Peeping Tom” and Martha Coolidge’s “Not a Pretty Picture” become available for home viewing via 4K and Blu-ray releases. The 1952 adventure film “Bwana Devil” is not held in as high regard as those classics by most cinephiles, but its restoration and Blu-ray release from Kino Lorber are just as significant. The first color 3D feature film, “Bwana Devil” was a game changer in Hollywood history, and Kino’s Blu-ray provides the first chance in decades to see it as it was originally presented — an experience that reveals “Bwana Devil” is a far more exciting film than its tepid reputation would indicate.

Nearly twenty years ago, Lucy Walker was making a film on the slopes of Everest following a group of blind teenage Tibetan climbers. While on the mountain, she heard of an incident that had taken place when a male guide attacked his wife and climbing partner, a Nepalese woman named Lhakpa Sherpa. Lhakpa’s cursed expedition was the focus of a damning book published a couple of years later, as well as a feature in Outside Magazine. At that point Lhakpa had summited Everest seven times but was living in a cramped apartment in Connecticut as an illiterate single mother, still […]

The return of Joseph Gordon-Levitt is just getting started.
After the actor took a hiatus from Hollywood, Gordon-Levitt has starred in musical “Flora and Son,” “Super Pumped,” and “Poker Face,” all in 2023. Now, the actor is bringing back his comedic timing for darkly funny crime thriller “Greedy People.”
Gordon-Levitt plays an outrageously corrupt cop who helps convince a rookie (Himesh Patel) to steal one million dollars. The official synopsis reads: “Will (Patel) and his rogue partner Terry (Gordon-Levitt) upend their small island town when they accidentally discover one million dollars at a crime scene (of their own making). After the duo unwisely decides to steal the money, the community’s quirky residents are lured into the mad dash for cash — ranging from an expectant mom (Lily James) to a masseur (Simon Rex) to a shrimp company owner (Tim Blake Nelson) — and everyone learns just how far they are willing to go for the almighty dollar.

Billionaire and one-time media mogul Edgar Bronfman Jr. is still considering making an offer for Paramount Global.
A rep for Bronfman confirmed that he is evaluating options for a potential bid for Paramount. His continued interest in the media conglomerate was first reported by Axios.
On July 7, Paramount Global and Skydance Media, David Ellison’s smaller media and production company, announced a two-part transaction that will result in Skydance buying out Shari Redstone’s National Amusements Inc. and then merging with Paramount, whose properties include CBS, Paramount Pictures, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks.
About $6 billion of the $8 billion to fund the deal is coming from the family of Oracle founder Larry Ellison (David’s father) and about $2 billion is from Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Capital Partners private-equity investment firm.

Even battling the massive draw of San Diego Comic-Con, Midsummer Scream 2024 — the latest edition of the world’s biggest Halloween convention — had record attendance with well over 50,000 guests. Horror fans and fiends packed the Long Beach Convention Center in Southern California for three days (July 26-28) of pre-spooky season celebrations, including activations from Paramount, Universal, and Lionsgate, among others. That’s proof, coordinators say, not just of the loyal fanbase still making scary movies and haunts lucrative year-round, but also of the thriving professional community keeping the genre alive for film and TV workers facing extreme uncertainty within the industry.
“The horror community is an extremely supportive and inclusive community,” Norman Gidney, executive director of The Screaming Room Film Festival at Midsummer Scream, told IndieWire. “It’s not just a life raft in economic times. There’s a tremendous catharsis and emotional and mental support from horror and its people that we lay claim to.

Over the past couple of years, Abrams Books has been releasing omnibus collections of "The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror" comic books, found in "Vol. 1: Scary Tales & Scarier Tentacles" and "Vol. 2: Deadtime Stories for Boos & Ghouls." While some of these issues feature illustrated adaptations of some of the show's best Halloween special segments, more importantly they have original horror and sci-fi inspired comic stories from an outstanding assembly of guest writers and artists. Now, the collection is about to be complete with the third and final volume, "The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Ominous Omnibus Volume 3: Fiendish Fables of Devilish Delicacies," arriving in August. Abrams Books sent us an early copy, and it's a fantastic way to complete the collection.

One of the biggest cinematic surprises of the last year was, without a doubt, "Godzilla Minus One." It may have been difficult for longtime fans to imagine an entry from this franchise hitting such a high bar nearly 70 years into its existence, but director Takashi Yamazaki's film delivered the goods -- so much so that it became the first and only "Godzilla" movie to earn an Oscar. Those who have watched it are certainly aware that "Minus One" is great, but even for those who have already seen it and are well aware of what the film has to offer, there is a strong argument to be made for watching the movie again in an entirely new way.
Amid the film's record-breaking theatrical run, its distributor, Toho, released the "Minus Color" edition, which, as the title implies, is Yamazaki's World War II-era take on the King of the Monsters in black-and-white.

Alfonso Cuarón is teasing just how impactful his upcoming Apple TV+ limited series is to his career.
The five-time Academy Award winner told Vanity Fair that series “Disclaimer” is the most “overtly narrative” project he’s worked on to date. “Disclaimer,” which will premiere October 11, stars Cate Blanchett as an acclaimed journalist whose own secrets are brought to light when a novel mirroring a past indiscretion is published. Cuarón writes, directs, and executive produces the series which is based on Renée Knight’s bestselling novel. The show was announced in 2021 and is Cuarón’s first TV series since his short-lived 2014 NBC show “Believe.”
“In television, you go A, B, C, D. In film, you find a way to go from A to D directly,” Cuarón told Vf. “Here it was about experimenting with something different. I have never done something so overtly narrative.”
The auteur continued, “The miscalculation is that...

With San Diego Comic-Con just over, there’s quite a bit of excitement about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And even though “The Marvels” didn’t do amazingly well at the box office, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel is seemingly a big piece of the MCU’s future. However, she’s not really at liberty to discuss said future.
During an interview with The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast, where she’s talking about her acclaimed limited series, “Lessons in Chemistry,” Brie Larson did drop some Marvel nuggets.

The film collaborations of Ismail Merchant and James Ivory were so successful that “Merchant Ivory” became synonymous not just with the name of their production company but an entire style, if not genre, of filmmaking: Well-mounted period dramas of sophistication, taste, and erudition that come across today as light-years more refined than “Downton Abbey” or other costume dramas created in the wake of their popularity.
Stephen Soucy pays tribute to this remarkable collaboration and what made the films of Merchant Ivory so distinctive and unreplicatable in his new documentary of the same name, “Merchant Ivory,” the trailer for which IndieWire is exclusively debuting below. The documentary appeared at Doc NYC 2023 and was an official selection of the Palm Springs International Film Festival and Sarasota Film Festival earlier this year. The odds were stacked against Timothée Chalamet long before those set photos trickled online.
By just signing up to play Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s forthcoming bio-drama “A Complete Unknown,” the 28-year-old megastar willingly placed himself in the crosshairs of Dylan’s most devoted fans — who, let’s be honest, are not easily impressed.
When paparazzi pics of Chalamet dressed in character seeped onto social media, the response was largely negative. Dylan fanatics, or Dylanologists as they self-identify, lost faith in the project and picked apart every detail of Chalamet’s Greenwich Village getup, and a photo of the actor wrapped in an enormous (and rather hideous) scarf quickly became meme fodder.
But then the trailer came out, offering a two-minute glimpse of Mangold’s vision set to Chalamet’s rousing rendition of “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” and cynical skepticism seemed to morph into cautious optimism.

It’s been eight years since the release of the female-led “Ghostbusters” reboot. And honestly, there are still people who are upset about it. Sure, we’ve had another reboot of the franchise, with two new sequels. But the vitriol still exists against director Paul Feig’s attempt at a reboot. One person who still is out there publicly defending the film is none other than Dan Aykroyd.

"Here is something I learned in 1922: there are always worse things waiting. You think you have seen the most terrible thing, the one that coalesces all your nightmares into a freakish horror that actually exists, and the only consolation is that there can be nothing worse [...] But there is worse, your mind does not snap and somehow you carry on."
These chilling words grace Stephen King's novella "1922," originally published as a part of his collection "Full Dark, No Stars" before getting a stand-alone release in 2017. The inspiration for the novella's setting was found in the photographs attached to Michael Lesy's nonfiction book "Wisconsin Death Trip," which evoked a sense of rural desolation and harshness, contributing to the narrative's gritty and brutal tone. Such a visceral aura is tough to replicate in a visual adaptation, as the power of words often falls short when transported to a medium...

Ask anyone in the industry and, chances are, they'll claim to know the real key to finding success in the moviemaking business. Whether it's those who insist you spend your life savings on expensive film schools or extremely online directors posting entire threads on social media about how anyone can just whip out their iPhone and shoot an entire movie themselves, everyone seems to know the secret. Well, allow me to add my voice to the choir and humbly propose that it comes down to three important factors: Work well with others, finish shoots on time, and make friends in high places. In this case, there are no higher friends than Robert Downey, Jr.

The online hyper-specificity of Sean Wang’s portrait of a Taiwanese-American teen in 2008 makes it a triumphant coming-of-age tale
Dìdi, the feature debut from writer-director Sean Wang and one of the best new films of the year, risks cliche from the jump by zooming in on a literal calendar on the wall. The movie begins almost exactly 16 years ago, on 29 July 2008, and ends a few weeks later. Fourteen-year-old Chris Wang (Izaac Wang) – “Dìdi” to his Taiwanese-American family, “Wang Wang” to his childhood friends in suburban Fremont, California, “bigwang510” to his handful of YouTube viewers – is frittering away the summer between eighth and ninth grade the way most kids did then: part online, part hanging out, and everywhere a minefield of hot and sticky feelings.
Wang knows this period well, and the semi-autobiographical film is chock-full of specifically 2008 references – Livestrong bracelets, Motorola Krzr phones, Paramore Riot posters. Chris’s headstrong older...

The feud between Rebel Wilson and the producers of her directorial debut is escalating.
On Monday evening, three producers behind the musical “The Deb” filed an amended complaint in Los Angeles Superior Court that expanded on their claims that the “Pitch Perfect” star defamed them when she accused them of “inappropriate behavior towards the lead actress of the film [and] embezzling funds from the film’s budget.” Wilson made the comments in a video posted on Instagram, in which she named the film’s producers Amanda Ghost and Gregor Cameron as well executive producer Vince Holden. Some of the most illustrious names in rock — and other genres — will pay tribute to Robbie Robertson in a celebratory concert at the L.A.-area Kia Forum on Oct. 17, with the musician’s longtime friend and collaborator Martin Scorsese among the executive producers.

Fans of "The Boys" should prepare to see a lot more of Captain America-parody Soldier Boy (played by Jensen Ackles) in the near future. Ackles is not only starring as Soldier Boy in a prequel spin-off, "Vought Rising," he's also set to be a series regular for the fifth and final season of "The Boys."
Soldier Boy was introduced in season 3 of the hit superhero satire series. Once the leader of America's greatest superhero team, Payback, his teammates tired of his abusive behavior in 1984 and backstabbed him, handing him over to Ussr scientists for (super)human experiments. A24 and AMC Theaters announced the film series “A24 Presents: A Teenage Dream Series,” which includes four beloved A24 films that deal with tweens, teens, and everything in between. The series begins August 7 with Bo Burnham’s directorial debut “Eighth Grade.” A new film will screen each Wednesday through August 28.
The angst and back-to-school dread that comes with the August Summer Scaries is embodied by the slew of selected films that each embody different genres, including (of course) horror.
Jonah Hill’s first feature “Mid90s,” which he wrote and directed, screens August 14, followed by Sofia Coppola’s “The Bling Ring” based on the true story of L.A. teens looting celebrities’ homes on August 21. The recent viral horror film “Talk to Me” rounds out the series August 28. The...

**Spoiler Warning – This article spoils multiple cameos in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” You’ve been warned.**
One of the best aspects of “Deadpool & Wolverine” is how the cameos are more than just simple gags. The people who show up in the film with cameos actually are given things to do. And two perfect examples of that are Channing Tatum’s Gambit and Wesley Snipes’ Blade.

Germany’s Christoph Hochhäusler, the acclaimed director of “Till The End of The Night” which premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival, returns with his latest film, “Death Will Come.” The crime piece is set to debut at the Locarno Film Festival, produced by Heimatfilm in collaboration with Amour Fou Luxembourg and Tarantula.
Sold by Italy’s True Colors, the film sees Tez, a hitwoman played by Sophie Verbeeck, tasked to avenge the death of a crime boss’s courier. The boss (Louis-Do de Lencquesaing) who hired her has motives more nuanced than they seem.
Tez remains an enigma, with the story only scratching the surface of what makes her tick as she goes about her work. For Hochhäusler, the mystery is intentional. “I believe spectator and character must meet. As a spectator, I am usually willing to go to greater lengths, investing in the fiction so to speak, if the...
