Tough guys don't dance takes us into a time and place that seemed to exist between the 80's and 90's but in reality never existed at all.
It is a fascinating portrayal of strange characters 'dancing' through a very confusing plot that might remind us just barely of crime noir themes in movies like Reservoir Dogs, Blue Velvet or a more obscure work like American Strays. Yet, it stands on its own as the characters deliver lines in a manner which would put off normal audiences who can't quite place their accents or speech mannerisms and who then realize with terror and contempt that "people don't talk this way".
And this is why this movie is not just simply another crime/thriller noir with a convoluted plot.
It is a work of art and like the greatest works of art - it will forever remain unappreciated by a restless audience who expect normal characters delivering lines while sticking to conventional norms.
Great performances by all but especially a scene stealing Wings Hauser.
Highly recommended.

This is the review of the English dubbed version. Despite the lips not matching well at times, the dubbed English voices are done very well and convey the character's individual mannerisms very well. It is also a homage of sorts to the earlier Italian crime movies from the seventies also dubbed in English.
The story is told from various different parts of the timeline before and after the robbery but is easy to follow and quite exciting in each episode.
The acting is good but quirky enough to irritate a large segment of viewers used to the stiff monochromatic and one dimensional characters of modern movies. The lead investigator is very good despite being a bit of a racist - again cast in a playful manner against the stereotypical role that Hollywood would assign. And our hero or ant-hero - the mastermind is determined, funny and yet almost righteous in his quest for greatness.
A fun caper movie to be enjoyed by those who appreciate character and pay less attention to authenticity of the real events this is based on.

The key to enjoying this movie is not to expect a horror movie or a Christopher Lee movie. It is simply a low budget television-like movie that has a few interesting comedy bits and very good atmosphere and sound. If you play this on a good home theater system you would be amazed at the sound of this misunderstood little gem of a movie esp in a few very good hypnosis scenes. The inspector character provided some funny moments and the main character - the private investigator was not too bad. Lee as the keeper was ok, but not his best acting.
What I enjoyed were a few comedic moments offered up by inspector and the scenes where the patients were being hypnotized.
A fair movie to watch late in the night when you are bored!
