Christmas isn’t tomorrow — unless you’re actually reading this on December 24, which is possible! — but it is practically here! And that means it’s time for the annual Whobilation of watching Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” once again.

Of course, in 2024, there are a few ‘Grinch’ movies to choose from. There’s the original animated special, there’s Jim Carrey’s version and there’s Benedict Cumberbatch’s take on the grumpy character (though you’d be forgiven if you forgot that one existed). The story largely remains the same in each one: Grinch hates Christmas, Grinch decides to steal Christmas, Grinch has the best dog in the world, and Grinch eventually sees the error of his ways.

In addition to Hot Frosty starring Lacey Chabert and Dustin Milligan, another Christmas film involving bare-chested men and rock-hard abs has arrived on Netflix ahead of the holidays.

The Merry Gentlemen, starring Chad Michael Murray and Britt Robertson, follows Robertson’s Ashley, a loyal Jingle Belles dancer who unexpectedly gets let go and goes home to her small town for the holidays, where she discovers that her parent’s local venue, The Rhythm Room, isn’t raking in the cash like it used to. Ashley combines a tangled garland meet cute with Murray’s Luke and a confession from her sister to brainstorm a way to get the town talking about the Rhythm Room once more: a Christmas-themed shirtless male revue comprised of dancers led by Luke.

On Sunday, it looked like Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ Christmas movie Red One had opened on the higher end of higher end of expectations with a $34.1 million domestic debut. But final grosses for the weekend show the big-budget holiday pic coming in lower at $32.1 million, according to final numbers released Monday by Amazon MGM Studios.

Overseas, Red One — which will need exceptionally strong legs to be considered a win theatrically — took in $14.7 million from 75 markets in its second outing for a foreign tally of $50 million and $82.1 million globally. Amazon MGM wisely chose to open the film early overseas in order to avoid a direct showdown with Paramount’s Gladiator II, which launched internationally this weekend ahead of its Nov. 22 domestic debut.

Gladiator II roared to a record-shattering $87 million from 63 markets — the biggest R-rated international opening in history for Paramount, as well as the biggest foreign launch ever for director Ridley Scott.

Christmas has arrived early at the box office.

Amazon MGM Studio’s holiday film Red One, starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, earned $3.7 million in Thursday previews before opening everywhere across North America on Friday (the number also includes grosses from other early access screenings). The big-budget tentpole will be playing in a total of 4,032 cinemas this weekend, including Imax, Dolby Cinema and other premium large-format screens.

Tracking shows the movie opening in the $30 million to $35 million range domestically. Warner Bros. Pictures is distributing the Seven Bucks production overseas, where Red One opened to $28 million this year in order to avoid a direct showdown with Paramount’s Gladiator II, which is launching this weekend at the international box office a week ahead of its domestic debut. (Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel could do as much as $80 million or more in its foreign bow.)

It's a pretty impressive feat for an actor to be able say that they've contributed to three of the biggest movies in box-office history, but it's a claim that has certainly come at a cost for Zoe Saldaña. The star of "Lioness" and Netflix's "Emilia Pérez" was recently asked about her lucky streak stint in franchise films that saw her as Neytiri in James Cameron's "Avatar" movies as well as Gamora in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies along with "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame." When asked if she'd ever go back to those kinds of roles, the former Guardian gave one stipulation on returning to that kind of world.

"I can't ever say that I won't ever go to space," Saldaña told Vanity Fair, having also played Uhura in the rebooted "Star Trek" franchise. "I love being in space. I would like to just be a human in space.

That’s the hope in any case as their new Christmas movie, Red One, opens across North America this weekend after a tough fall. Tracking suggests the action-adventure movie will unpack a domestic debut in the $30 million to $35 million range for Amazon MGM Studios before enjoying a long run through the year-end holidays (fingers crossed).

However, there will be plenty of chatter about the movie’s box office performance considering it cost $250 million to make. A major legacy studio in the same situation would come under intense scrutiny if a film carrying that price tag opened to those numbers, but Amazon insists its business model is entirely different and fueled by subscribers, and not just box office. It also hopes to launch a new film franchise.

Jake Kasdan’s festive punch-up is the latest Christmas film to arrive in cinemas – but could it be one of the last?

Ahead of its release in the UK this week, Amazon MGM’s Red One has a few mountains to climb.

Originally scheduled for a Christmas 2023 release, the $250m film was pushed back by a year, reportedly due to the Hollywood strikes. Then, in April, an incendiary The Wrap article alleged star Dwayne Johnson cost the studio $50m by arriving on set seven-to-eight hours late – charges the film’s director and producer have both strenuously denied. A trailer debut in June prompted the Guardian headline: “Will The Rock’s Red One be the worst Christmas movie ever?”. The film’s review embargo lifted at 5am the day of its UK release, coincidentally ensuring any questionable publicity was buried under the rather more pressing news circulating the morning of the 6th November.

December and the holidays are one month closer. Now, Freeform has released the schedule for its traditional “25 Days of Christmas” programming. Last year, Freeform was #1 for holiday viewership for the 11th year out of 12 years reaching almost 37 million viewers!

It’s November 1, and Freeform is already ready to start spreading holiday cheer.

The network released its 25 Days of Christmas schedule Friday, revealing all the programming coming up in December. There’s something for everyone, with things kicking off at 7 a.m. and extending through at least midnight every day from December 1 to 25.

The lineup includes classics like the Home Alone films, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, the Santa Clause movies, Miracle on 34th Street and multiple versions of The Grinch.

There’s also some non-holiday films sprinkled in, including Moana and Toy Story.

And, as always, Freeform has a few network premieres planned, including one for Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You on December 1, after which it’ll repeatedly air through Christmas Day. Dashing Through the Snow and Santa’s Little Helper are also getting a Freeform debut on December 8.

Amazon MGM Studios’ big $200M Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans Santa Claus caper movie, Red One, landed on tracking recently and it’s eyeing a $36M opening in U.S./Canada with a chance for upside. The Jake Kasdan directed reteam with Johnson post their Jumanji movies opens on Nov. 15.

Red One was originally green lit for streaming, however, Amazon MGM Studios pivoted to theatrical after the movie tested well. Essentially when it comes to an Amazon MGM Studios deciding to go theatrical on a movie that was originally conceived for streaming, it boils down to whether the studio can cover their domestic P&a costs at the box office. Hence, there’s that confidence with Red One. Warner Bros. has overseas on the Seven Bucks production reteam per their offshore deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

Positive signs are that Red One is not just trending with guys, but Johnson’s female followers as well.

The Producers Guild of America is honoring Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination, with the 2025 David O. Selznick Achievement Award for his “extraordinary producing accomplishments.” Melendandri is the second animation producer to receive this recognition in the 36 years the awards have been running. The ceremony will take place at the annual Producers Guild Awards on Feb. 8 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.

Meledandri founded Illumination Studios in 2007. Before then, he was president of 20th Century Fox Animation. His credits include “Despicable Me,” “The Lorax,” “Hop,” “Minions,” “The Secret Life of Pets,” “Sing,” “The Grinch,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Ice Age” and more.

“The extraordinary vision and innovation Chris brings to animated feature films has not only captivated audiences of all ages but also been instrumental in reshaping the entertainment landscape,” said Producers Guild of America Presidents Donald De Line and Stephanie Allain in a joint statement.

Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri is set to receive the Producers Guild of America’s David O. Selznick Achievement Award.

Meledandri will be honored at the 2025 PGA Awards, set for Feb. 8 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The boss of the animation company behind the Despicable Me franchise is only the second animation producer to receive the Selznick Award after John Lasseter received the honor in 2009.

Earlier recipients of the David O. Selznick Award also include Steven Spielberg, Barbara Broccoli, Mary Parent, Charles Roven, Brian Grazer, David Heyman, Kevin Feige and, most recently, Martin Scorsese. Pharrell Williams has released an upbeat new song, “Piece by Piece.” The track features the Princess Anne High School Fabulous Marching Cavaliers and will appear in Morgan Neville’s animated biopic Piece by Piece, in theaters Oct. 11.

Pharrell Williams and Michel Gondry’s coming-of-age musical film now has name and a theatrical release date: Atlantis, and it’s out on May 9, 2025.

Variety revealed the release date for the film on Thursday, several months after breaking the news that Missy Elliott is also tied to the project. The Universal Pictures film is set to feature a massive, star-studded cast that also includes Halle Bailey and Da’Vine Joy Randolph in lead roles. When the live-action adaptation of ‘The Cat in the Hat’ premiered in November 2003, it primarily targeted late Millennials and early Gen Z viewers. As a young audience, they were mostly oblivious to the film’s many adult jokes. Instead, they delighted in the memorable musical numbers, the vibrant color palette of every scene, and the playful comedy. When Netflix released its latest major data set on Thursday — its second under the name of What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report — animated features continued to demonstrate a major impact for the streamer. Of the top 100 most viewed titles in the period of review, from July to December 2023, 33 were animated, bringing in a total of 1,087,600,000 views.

That being said, titles licensed from other studios continued to heavily overshadow Netflix originals, in terms of impact. Of the 33 animated titles in the Top 100, five were produced by Netflix; the Adam Sandler starrer Leo ranked the highest at #3 overall, coming in with 96 million views. Others that made the cut included The Monkey King, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the Oscar-nominated Nimona, The Sea Beast and Back to the Outback.

While Amazon MGM Studios didn’t take the stage at CinemaCon, they did meet with exhibitors and key press to strut their future theatrical slate, in particular they showed off ten minutes of the Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ movie Red One. While we agree to keep mum about the details of the Santa Claus rescue movie, let’s just say the originally conceived for Prime Video title is definitely meant for theatrical, which is where it’s going on Nov. 15; the only wide release currently on that weekend.

The Disney+ series based on author Rick Riordan’s best-selling books opened to a good-sized audience in the week before Christmas. The first two episodes, which debuted the evening of Dec. 19, drew about 572 million minutes of watch time, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. With a combined run time of 80 minutes, that works out to about 7.15 million complete runs (or “views” as currently defined by much of the industry) of the two episodes in the United States.

Disney had earlier said that the first episode had earned 13.3 million views worldwide — equivalent to a little more than 505 million minutes — over its first six days. The Nielsen figures for the premiere put Percy Jackson ahead of Disney+’s last two Marvel premieres, Secret Invasion (461 million minutes) and season two of Loki (446 million), in total viewing time.

Three weeks after premiering on Netflix, Young Sheldon has ascended to the most watched show on streaming platforms in the United States. A platform switch to Netflix also sent The Super Mario Bros. Movie to its biggest streaming week to date.

The two titles, which rank second and third on Nielsen’s streaming chart for the week of Dec. 4-10, are the latest examples of Netflix’s multiplying power. Young Sheldon had 1.63 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Max for the week, after recording 1.85 billion minutes a week earlier and 963 million for its first week on both platforms. The Big Bang Theory prequel had never charted before the past three weeks (it was previously exclusive to Max) and has easily surpassed its parent show in viewing time all three weeks. Although most Christmas films don’t tend to follow the path of, say, 1990’s Home Alone, which topped the domestic box office for a whopping 12 straight weeks, they had typically been a staple of the release calendar, with a handful of titles hitting theaters annually, as recently as the late 2010s. That list includes such 2016 theatrical offerings as Almost Christmas, Bad Santa 2, Office Christmas Party and Why Him?, followed by 2017’s Daddy’s Home 2, A Bad Moms Christmas and animated...

NBCUniversal has led the way in terms of holiday season programming. Beginning with record viewership of the annual Macy’s Parade and other ratings wins along the way, the company has boasted a total of 82 million viewers of its holiday programming across NBC and Peacock since Thanksgiving, according to the most current measurement available.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was the No. 1 program contributing to that total, as the event has remained the most-watched non-news and non-sports program on all of television since 2021. After debuting to 28.5 million viewers, it has since reached 40 million viewers.
