Delicious in Dungeon is an anime adaptation of Ryoko Kui's popular manga series; the first season is now available to watch on Netflix. There are 24 episodes available to stream now, with a second season in the works. Studio Trigger, the production company behind the anime, is known for its strikingly beautiful art and animation, and they’ve made Delicious in Dungeon a visual feast.

But the characters in Delicious in Dungeon are after a different sort of feast. On the surface, it’s a show about a group of Dungeons & Dragons-esque adventurers defeating monsters, earning riches, and eventually confronting the dreaded Mad Mage. However, it becomes much more when the cleric Falin gets eaten by a red dragon after saving her brother Laios from its flames. In a weird twist of events, Sony Group Corporation is reportedly interested in acquiring Kadokawa, a Japanese media conglomerate responsible for the distribution of several famous anime, movies, and games. If this comes true in the next few weeks, Sony will have a huge part in the anime industry and its distribution, along with the gaming and film industry. However, the company already has its hands on other anime companies, such as Crunchyroll, Funimation, and others. Fans are more concerned than excited at this point.

The main concern surrounding this possible acquisition is the responsibility of publishing anime titles falling on Western publishers. It’s something that has almost always guaranteed failure and nobody wants Sony to have this much control over the anime industry. The company already has a 2% stake in Kadokawa and owning them might be going too far for everyone’s comfort.

Kadokawa Corporation announced on Nov 7, 2024, that its anime and live-action video business achieved significant growth in the second quarter of fiscal year 2024, with revenue soaring 26.7% year-on-year to 14.406 billion yen.

Operating profit also saw a substantial increase, rising 68.5% to 1.697 billion yen, reaching record-breaking levels for the company’s entertainment sector.

The growth was propelled by strong demand for popular anime series, both in Japan and overseas, with licensing income from streaming platforms, games, and merchandise providing a significant boost.

Key drivers in the quarter included Oshi no Ko Season 2, Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian, also known as Roshidere, and the theatrical release of Overlord: Holy Kingdom Arc.

Kadokawa also saw positive results in its live-action segment, with licensing income from recent theatrical releases for streaming platforms adding to the company’s earnings.

The winners of this year's Harvey Awards—which have been recognizing outstanding achievements in various comics-related categories since 1988—were announced over the weekend. The fantasy genre of anime has gotten into a kind of slump with the popularity of isekai–which were novel when they were conceived, but have devolved into male fantasies where the protagonists enter a magic world, slay monsters, and get a harem of women. While fans have started getting sick of isekai stories, fantasy as a genre is finding a return to form with recent properties like “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End”, and Studio Trigger’s recent adaptation of the fantastic “Dungeon Meshi” or “Delicious in Dungeon” by author Ryoko Kui.

The anime has successfully adapted multiple arcs of the manga, and a second season is already underway. For fans who can’t wait though, they’ve turned to the original manga to further explore the fate of Laios, Marcille, and the rest of the Touden Party.

Kadokawa revealed its its top-performing IP for the first quarter of 2024 (April-June), with Dungeon Meshi (Delicious in Dungeon) taking the lead by a wide margin.

The company reported that the IP generated over 2 billion yen in revenue across all media, including publishing, anime, and licensing, although the exact figure was not disclosed.

Dungeon Meshi topped the rankings in both the publishing and IP creation segment, as well as the anime production segment, earning more than twice the sales of the second-place IP.

Coming in second was KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!, which brought in close to 1 billion yen in sales.

Despite being licensed from another company, the anime adaptation of Oshi no Ko secured the third position, solely based on its anime revenue.
