In 1977, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band released a cover of the Bruce Springsteen song “Blinded by the Light.” The song charted higher than Springsteen’s own version. The Manfred Mann version hit No. 1, and Springsteen has never had a No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100. Manfred Mann was worried about seeing Springsteen after the cover because of one word in the song.
A band said they worried about how Bruce Springsteen would react to their cover
Springsteen released “Blinded By the Light” on his first album. Four years after he released it, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band released their own version of the song. In it, they accidentally changed the line “Cut loose like a deuce” to “wrapped up like a douche.”
“I don’t think Springsteen liked our ‘Blinded By The Light,’ ’cos we sang ‘wrapped up like a douche’, and it wasn’t written like that and I screwed it up completely,...

Despite stiff competition on that year’s rock-legend road-show circuit—the Grateful Dead touring the massive Wall of Sound speaker system, Csny reunited, hitting the sheds, and de-uniting in record time—there was only one outing anybody meant when they said Tour ’74. That January and February, Bob Dylan and The Band reunited for 39 shows in 21 cities, their first jaunt together—and Dylan’s first, period—since the notorious 1966 world tour that would feed rock’s early bootleg industry.

You can finally listen to George Harrison’s star-studded Concert for Bangladesh album on the major streaming services. The acclaimed benefit concert, which took place at New York’s Madison Square Garden in 1971, featured Harrison, Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, Billy Preston, and many others joining forces to raise money for Unicef and raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis that followed the previous year’s Bangladesh Liberation War. It was the first time musicians banded together for a benefit concert on a grand scale.

Joan Baez has kept a relatively low public profile since wrapping up her Fare Thee Well tour in 2019, performing only on special occasions. One of those took place Monday night at the annual Tibet House benefit at New York’s Carnegie Hall, where she topped a bill that included Maggie Rogers, Laurie Anderson, Maya Hawke, the Philip Glass Ensemble, Tenzin Choegyal, and the Scorchio Quartet.

Last November, Cat Power took over London’s Royal Albert Hall to recreate Bob Dylan’s iconic 1966 “Royal Albert Hall” concert. That show, during which Power closely followed the setlist of Dylan’s infamous tour, is being memorialized with the new live album Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert, out now via Domino, but you can hear her renditions of now.
Power, aka the musical alias of Chan Marshall, says Dylan’s music has been an inspiration to her since she was five years old. His 1966 tour was a bit contentious to folk purists, as it saw the singer-songwriter switch from acoustic to electric guitar midway through the set. Power, however, is part of the camp who believes the tour was a major turning point in rock ‘n’ roll.
“In a way, Dylan is a deity to all of us who write songs,” she explains in a press release.

Bob Dylan made his Japanese debut 45 years ago this year as part his 1978 world concert tour. Now, those shows are being commemorated in the new comprehensive box set The Complete Budokan 1978, out on Friday, November 17th.
Available in 4xCD, 8xLP (Japan only), and digital formats, the fully remastered deluxe collection includes two shows recorded at Tokyo’s Nippon Budokan Hall on February 28th and March 1st, 1978, making up a total of 36 previously unreleased Dylan performances. If that feels like too much to swallow, there’s also a double-lp highlight edition called Bob Dylan – Another Budokan 1978, featuring 16 selected unreleased tracks.
Aside from the music, the set includes replicated memorabilia such as concert tickets, brochures, posters, and promotional materials, as well as a vivid 60-page photo book with never-before-seen images of Dylan, both onstage and in candid moments during the tour. Pre-orders are ongoing.

British journalist and author Nicholas Evans, best known for writing “The Horse Whisperer,” which was adapted as a film by Robert Redford, has died of a heart attack, according to United Agents. He was 72.
In a statement, United Agents said the “much-loved” author had died following a heart attack on Aug. 9. “He lived a full and happy life, in his home on the banks of the River Dart in Devon,” the statement added.
Evans’ 1995 novel “The Horse Whisperer” sold 20 million copies worldwide and was the number one bestseller in 20 countries. It has been translated into 40 languages. The 1998 film, produced by and directed by Redford, also starred him alongside Scarlett Johansson, Kristin Scott Thomas and Sam Neill.
The inspiration for “The Horse Whisperer” came in 1993 when Evans met a blacksmith in the south-west of England who informed him about horse whisperers — those who have the gift of healing traumatized horses by speaking to them.

Scaggs was right in more ways than one; about an hour later, in a sort of Hollywood fever dream, Weird Al Yankovic took the stage and broke from his usual staple of parodies to sing surprisingly tight versions of Tom Petty’s “Breakdown” and the Beatles’ “Savoy Truffle.”

Longtime Bob Dylan fans know Rolling Thunder Revue as one of the enigmatic singer-songwriter’s most legendary tours, so it should come as little surprise that Martin Scorsese decided to indulge in some mythmaking of his own for “Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story.”
For this would-be definitive chronicle of the people, places and music involved in Dylan’s 1975-76 concert series, Scorsese combines vintage footage with modern-day interviews — not all of them real — for a vibrant, engaging portrait of Dylan then and now, filling gaps in his own inscrutable history while simultaneously showcasing some of his most eclectic and vivid performances.
Framed by the United States’ impending bicentennial, Rolling Thunder was conceived as a response to the stadium tour he’d done with the Band the previous year, an opportunity to play smaller venues at lower ticket prices and to connect with fans in a more intimate way.

Ben Monder has spent more than two decades carving out an extremely personal aesthetic niche. The guitarist has played with tons of jazz luminaries, including Paul Motian and Maria Schneider, but recent albums under his own name — like 2005’s Oceana and 2013’s Hydra — feature sprawling, immersive, micro-detailed long-form compositions that seem to land somewhere between technical metal and ethereal art song.

In the annals of rich men who look to Hollywood to build a secondary empire, real estate billionaire Charles S. Cohen (Forbes net worth: $2.2 billion) is their Don Quixote. His Cohen Media Group is staking its claim in spaces renowned for their allergies to profit: He’s restoring classic films, releasing foreign-language titles, and moving into specialty exhibition.

“Paterson” actress Golshifteh Farahani was exiled from Iran after she appeared in Ridley’s Scott’s 2008 film “Body of Lies” and appeared on screen and on the red carpet without a veil. The actress then moved to Paris, and while she doesn’t carry an Iranian passport, Donald Trump’s new travel ban could affect her career and next role.

Cinematic wankery at its most puerile. Two hours of the sun setting revealing that this is why it gets dark at night would not have been more pointless. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

The Childhood of a Leader is would-be deep cinematic wankery at its most puerile. This is a two-hour-long attempt to construct a metaphor that ends at a place where it steps back and smugly makes a “shocking” pronouncement of something so concretely literal that it is, well, literally the fact of the matter that everyone already knows. If actor turned director (and screenwriter, with Mona Fastvold) Brady Corbet had, with his feature debut, given us 120 minutes of the sun setting and then boldly concluded that this is why it gets dark at night, he would not have been more obvious and inevitable and pointless.

Jeff Buckley likely never intended to be remembered as a cover artist, but that is the legacy the late singer, who died in 1997 with just one album to his name, has left behind. And it'll continue into 2016: NPR reports that another posthumous Buckley album, You and I, is set to be released next March, this one featuring mostly covers he recorded as reference tracks to give his producers a sense of the sound he was after for his debut album. It'll include his take on Led Zeppelin's "Night Flight," Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman," the Smiths' "I Know It's Over" and "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side," and others, as well as two original songs. NPR also has a first listen of his cover of Sly and the Family Stone's 1968 classic anthem for equality "Everyday People," which Buckley has pared down considerably. Like...

Dylan concerts have never really been intended for hit-seeking crowds (imagine that), as he's fond of reworking his most iconic songs into different styles and tempos. It can be a fascinating thought experiment, hearing what could have been of the '60s folk and rock canon — one that drives interest to a new Dylan box set, The Cutting Edge 1965–1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12, out this Friday. Over the course of many discs (one comprised of nothing but alternate versions of “Like a Rolling Stone”), listeners bear witness to Dylan’s creative process in the studio during one of the most divisive moments of his career: starting with 1965’s Bringing It All Back Home and culminating with his all-time classic Blonde on Blonde the following year, the period when he first gravitated toward electric sounds and more abstract lyrics. On a micro level, “Just Like a Woman” — one of...

The Town That Dreaded Showdown: Bouchareb Returns to New Mexican Landscape with Mixed Results
French director Rachid Bouchareb’s long celebrated filmography has garnered two of his titles Academy Award nominations for Best Foreign Language Film (Dust of Life; Days of Glory), along with a host of other accolades for a body of work that often revolves around either Algerian experiences in France (modern and period), or explorations of race and/or gender within unique narratives. A long-time producer of Bruno Dumont’s work, Bouchareb has been pursuing a variety of international productions. His latest, Two Men in Town, is a morality exercise that happens to take place in roughly the same Us locale as his last effort, 2012’s Just Like a Woman. Despite a notable cast and several rather arresting performances, the end result never elevates beyond a standard dramatic exercise that ends in more or less the same...

A salacious yet also tedious portrayal of a woman who would appear to confirm all the nastiest stereotypes about women. Completely unfun, unpleasant, unerotic, and unenlightening. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of Lars von Trier

In a cinematic environment in which women were depicted, overall, as fully rounded human beings with a wide range of sexual expression available to them without judgment or disapproval, Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac would still be a disgusting, degrading portrait of a terrible person that is completely unfun, unpleasant, unerotic, and unenlightening. If you’re familiar with his very controversial and well-made 2012 film, The Attack, then director Ziad Doueiri’s next feature probably sounds like a walk in the park, though don’t be surprised if it doesn’t end up playing that way. Co-written by Doueiri, Ghassan Salhan and Joelle Touma (who wrote The Attack as well as Rachid Bouchareb’s Just Like a Woman, who happens to be producing this title), the inclusion of Gerard Depardieu seems an interesting choice. We’re unsure at what stage of development the film is in, but it’s a project Doueiri has been developing for quite some time, and news broke of Depardieu’s casting in mid 2013.

French-Algerian director Rachid Bouchareb has lately alternated between sweeping historical dramas (the WWII drama "Days of Glory," the Algerian War portrait "Outside the Law") and sentimental two-handers with quieter approaches ("London River," "Just Like a Woman"). In all cases, however, Bouchareb tends to deal in similar themes of contrasting political and personal relationships. "Two Men In Town," a loose remake of José Giovanni's 1973 tale of a paroled murderer trying to get his life back together, applies this tendency to the least-ideological of Bouchareb's movies, resulting in a thinly executed tale littered with uneven performances. Nevertheless, a committed turn by Forest Whitaker in the lead role, paired with "Holy Motors" and "My Life in Pink" cinematographer Yves Cape's evocative images of the spare western landscape, lead to an intriguing contrast between the half-baked material and a handful of stronger ingredients. It's a movie at war with its deficiencies. "Two Men.

In the film, the 31-year-old actress plays Marilyn, who leaves her deadbeat husband in Chicago to travel by convertible across the country. Accompanying her is Mona (Golshifteh Farahani), an immigrant in an arranged marriage who wants to escape her new family.
Compared to a "Thelma and Louis" type friendship, the two end up belly dancing in restaurants, as they each try to come to terms with a lifetime of emotional abuse.

At one point during their walk, Marlowe started to cry while Sienna held onto a dog leash. However, Marlowe appeared to be much calmer when she and Sienna met up with Tom Sturridge for lunch at the Ritz hotel on Sunday. Female Trouble: Bouchareb’s Understated First Chapter in Arab-American Trilogy
Algerian filmmaker Rachid Bouchareb, perhaps most widely recognized for his films Outside the Law (2010) and Days of Glory (2006), depicting historical and divisive conflicts between Algeria and France, returns once again to the Us with Just Like a Woman, the first film of a planned trilogy depicting the transforming relationships between the Western and Arab world. A female centric road film born out of severe character conflicts created by their oppressive, male dominated existence ensures that the film will be rampantly compared to Ridley Scott’s Thelma & Louise (1991), even though it avoids an overtly melodramatic malaise. Shining through its formulaic setup and stereotypical antagonists are a pair of actresses that manage to fit perfectly with Bouchareb’s knack for uniting people despite of their socially constructed differences.

Title: Just Like a Woman Director: Rachid Bouchareb Starring: Sienna Miller, Golshifteh Farahani, Roschdy Zem, Tim Guinee, Bahar Soomekh, Chafia Boudraa Themes of cultural identity and disunity figure prominently into the work of director Rachid Bouchareb, including 2006′s “Days of Glory” and 2011′s “Outside the Law,” both of which were nominated for Best Foreign Language Film Academy Awards. Bouchareb’s English language debut, “Just Like a Woman,” however, is a phony female fantasy — a minor chord variation on “Thelma & Louise” with none of that film’s panache, verve or insight. Instead tone-deaf and at times downright insufferable, this road trip flick in which bellydancing holds the key to feminine enlightenment [ Read More ]
