Back in the day, I don’t think sports movies were as popular in Bollywood as they are today. So, despite something as momentous as India’s win at the 1983 Cricket World Cup, we didn’t get a slew of films around that topic. In fact, it wasn’t until 2001’s Lagaan that we got a film wholly centered around cricket. The subgenre of drama films expanded in the 2000s with Iqbal, Chak De India, and Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal. In the 2010s we got Patiala House, Brothers, Saala Khadoos, and straight-up masterpieces like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Dangal, and Mukkabaaz. The 2020s have given us Panga, Rashmi Rocket, Liger (it is what it is), and Ghoomer. And to add to this illustrious list, while also making it a bit diverse, is Vijay 69.

Rishi Kapoor is livid. At first the brilliant actor was categorically told he was playing the exiled alleged gangster Dawood Ibrahim in Nikhil Advani's D-Day. In fact the title itself alludes to Dawood's extrication from his daughter's wedding by four Raw agents. But then there was a lot of pressure on the film's team to alter the 'D' factor and deflect attention from the real character. Like Sanjay Gupta in Shootout At Wadala, Nikhil Advani was left with no choice but to change the key outlawed character's name. But now a front-page interview with Rishi Kapoor claims the actor plays Dawood in the film. The interview has triggered off a panic attack among the film's team who are now frantically trying to complete the film's post-production while avoiding trouble from international crime syndicates. Taking a breather from his frenetic post-production work, Nikhil says, "The journalist decided on her own...

After his wonderfully skilled performance as a gay dean in Karan Johar's Student Of The Year, Rishi Kapoor is all set to play Dawood. The super-versatile Rishi Kapoor stepping into Dawood's white shoes is indeed a cinematic coup. It apparently took director Nikhil Advani who has earlier worked with Rishi Kapoor in Patiala House a good six months to convince the temperamental Kapoor. Rishi initially said no. Arshad Warsi was being considered for Dawood's role. But Advani had his heart set on Rishi Kapoor. And he finally got him. After Saif Ali Khan in Agent Vinod and Salman Khan in Ek Tha Tiger, it's Arjun Rampal who plays a Raw agent in D Day. Arjun is mighty kicked by the prospect of working with Rishi Kapoor.
D Day is about Raw agents, played by Arjun Rampal and Irrfan Khan who are assigned to bring Dawood back from Pakistan by road.

However recent films like No Problem, Patiala House, and the soon-to-be-released "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" the trend is coming back.

Nikhil Advani, director of Kal Ho Na Ho, Salaam-e-Ishq, Chandni Chowk to China and Patiala House is currently working on a number of scripts, one of which is a female orientated multi-starrer, reportedly featuring up to eight Bollywood beauties. Names that are currently being touted include Madhuri Dixit, Dimple Kapadia, Rani Mukerji, Karisma Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Genelia D’Souza.
Ask Nikhil and he shares “It is too premature. I am talking to everybody and it is quite exciting because it will give me an opportunity to work with some of the actors and actresses who I think are known as ‘classic’ in the film industry.” However, the last time Nikhil attempted a multi-starrer was with ‘Salam-e-Ishq’ back in 2007, which despite twelve stars, including the likes of Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, John Abraham and Vidya Balan, failed miserably at the box office, with both fans and critics alike.

There are just three more days to go for the release of Housefull 2 and things are heating up for the film. While one waits to see whether Akshay Kumar indeed goes on to hit a century with the film collecting 100 crores at the box office, it is obvious that this Sajid Khan film is being planned as a laugh riot with no serious moments whatsoever. After working in a 'dramedy' like Desi Boyz and an out and out family drama like Patiala House, one expects Akshay to have ensured that H...

If everything goes well then very soon we will get to see a unique pair romancing each other on-screen. In this successful journey, Katrina Kaif has been paired opposite many rocking stars of Bollywood but this time she is paired opposite such an actor working opposite whom is said to be a lifetime opportunity. Yes, it is right we will get to see Katrina Kaif romancing Amitabh Bachchan on-screen. ‘Patiala House’ and ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ director Nikhil Advani has approached the diva and the megastar to star opposite each other for a highly unconventional role in his next film ‘Mehrunnisa’. Armaan Kirmani has said that his latest film will appeal to Bollywood and mainstream cinemagoers. The Hindi-English film is the actor's first release since starring alongside Akshay Kumar and Rishi Kapoor in Nikhil Advani's Patiala House. Kirmani told Digital Spy: "I feel the unique aspect about Soulmates is that the film has been made in a very Western production style and yet it has retained its Eastern soul." The Cambridge graduate added: "It is not really Bollywood and not British Asian - somewhere in a space in between - a space where modern British Asian and immigrant reality lies." Actor-director Kirmani said that he consciously made the decision to move away from comic stereotyped (more)...

Today, after numerous spectacularly memorable songs as a superstar singer, and a multitude of super hit film music scores as part of the top music director troika Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Shankar Mahadevan is not only going to greater professional and artistic strengths, but is also giving back to society. Through his very own music academy, and through participating in socially uniting, relevant and powerful initiatives like participating in — and leading — close to one 100,000 patriotic Aurangabadkars on Republic Day-eve to set up a Guinness World Record for the maximum number of people singing the National Anthem in unison. Shankar, as he is fondly called by film fans as though they have known him all their lives, is constantly breaking new ground.
Soon after he appeared at the Aurangabad event, we caught up with Shankar Mahadevan, who spoke about ‘the most beautiful and emotional piece of music’ he has grown up to, his musicality,...

When production companies release news of future projects to come, fans and the media start spinning the wheel of speculation on who will direct and compose the music for the films. Of course, one of the biggest things that always gains the most attention is which actors and actresses will be chosen as the jodi for the film. For many fans it can be that pairing that will make or break any film more than the lack of script or direction. With Bollywood’s continuing affair with screen romance fans have been treated to some epic jodis like Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in Ddlj and more recently Akshay Kumar and Anushka Sharma, which proved to be the crutch of Patiala House. We also loved the jodi of newcomers Saqib Saleem & Saba Azad in Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge. While there have been many that have dazzled in the past,...

Akshay Kumar had a reasonably decent 2011 where he had a couple of average earners in Desi Boyz, Thank You and with good critical acclaim coming in for a sensitive performance in Patiala House. Moreover 2012 looks even brighter with quite a few interesting films spread across different genres lined up for release one after another. As the New Year kick-starts and Akshay gets back to the grind after a short holiday where he brought in the birthday of his wife Twinkle Khanna and fat...

My Oh My, how fast has 2011 gone. Most may feel it was only yesterday when 2010 began but here we are in a new year and eagerly waiting to see what comes. Naturally, this is a big thing for Bollywood followers like BollySpice as we delve into the best films of 2011. So without further adieu, here we go.
Ten: Bbuddha Hoga Tera Baap
He began the angry young man trend and stamped his rights on history. Amitabh Bachchan returns to the screen to recapture the tag in Bbuddha Hoga Tera Baap, under the direction of South director Puri Jagannath.

For admirers of films with prominent female roles, 2011 has certainly not been the best year for quality or choice. Actors have ruled the screen with substantial hero films like Ra. One, Ready and in the case of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, three major hero roles. The silence from the actresses corner has been so much that we at BollySpice have decided to bring the countdown from our usual ten down to five to adequately represent the performances throughout the year. Though it was quiet on the leading lady front in terms of roles, these five ladies gave performances that had to be singled out. See who impressed us in 2011!
5. Kalki Koechlin
Kalki Koechlin may be a surprise and unconventional addition to the list for some readers, but in 2011 she managed to pull off strong performances without the super celebrity tag that some of her contemporaries hold. She had quite a year with four different films,...

2011 was definitely a stellar year for acting where Salman ruled the box office with his biceps, where bromance was front and centre on road trips, and where we were introduced to various rockers. It was also the year for ensemble casts where male bonding came first alongside the buff fighting machines provided by the Southie remakes. It was a year of transition as well, where indie films rose up and featured fabulous acting and where the publicity machine for the biggies went into overdrive with lacklustre results. All through this, these actors all brought searing, novel, and dedication to their roles which offered them a chance to prove their mettle. Here’s to some of the men that entertained us over the year:
10. Salman Khan – Ready/Bodyguard

Jodis can often be the make or break of a given movie. This year has seen the comeback of some pairings cinema is already familiar with and it’s also given birth to some fresh twosomes. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and take a look at the jodis that we loved, the ones we didn’t quite enjoy and also those that made their own category in between the two extremes.
Shah Rukh Khan & Kareena Kapoor (Ra.One)
Ra.One, quite simply, made this duo look like they were sharing screen space with one another for the very first time. In the movie, the two looked hugely comfortable in their characters’ skins and this, in turn, made them look perfect with each other.
Verdict – Hot
John Abraham & Deepika Padukone (Desi Boyz)
It is very rare that two actors who are individually so appreciated for their looks to come together...

2011 was a great year for music in the Hindi film industry with an eclectic mix of styles, moods, vibes, beats, fresh new sounds and cool grooves. The songs ranged from romantic ballads, to full on rock, to the playful, the funny, the traditional, the internationally flavored ones and everything in-between and even some with the track tinged with a little bit of each. So many of the soundtracks this year were so good that it was not just one song that was killer good, it was most of them. Because so many albums this year were such a good collection of brilliant songs, think Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Delhi Belly, Rockstar and more, we had a tough time limiting ourselves to 25 Best Songs of the year, so we thought why try and decided to go with 50! We now present the 50 best songs of 2011!

Our leading ladies and item girls will be nowhere near half as attractive without the talented singers that voice their musical numbers. What’s more, while our cinematic experiences with our on-screen goddesses have a time limit, our playback goddesses are always with us in iPods, tablets, computers, radios and more. This year Bollyspice salutes the 10 female playback singers who astounded us with their vocals throughout the year.
10. Neha Bhasin
Ms, Bhasin (of ‘Viva!’ and ‘Kuch Khaas’ (Fashion) fame) epitomised the image of a Punjabi rock chick and commanded a nation to rock and roll with her in ‘Dhunki’ (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan). While Katrina Kaif may/may not have done justice to her vocalisations, Neha sure did make a place for herself in our hearts and on this list.

Playback singers are the unsung heroes of Indian Cinema (no pun intended). This year, for the very first time, Bollyspice would like to congratulate the following 10 male playback singers for their outstanding work in Indian Cinema in 2011.
10. Mika Singh
No one does a mass entertainer quite like Mika Singh and 2011 was no different with crowd-pleasing hits like like ‘Desi Beats’ (Bodyguard), ‘Dhinka Chika’ (Ready), ‘Saj Dhaj Ke’ (Mausam), ‘Pyaar Do’ (Thank You), ‘F.A.L.T.U’ and ‘Hero’ (Desi Boyz).
9. Shankar Mahadevan
Shankar Mahadevan began the year with a brilliant desi/urban mesh-up, ‘Rola Pe Gaya’ (Patiala House) and followed through with thought provoking ‘Der Lagi’ (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara) and ‘Roshni’ (Aarakshan). However, it was the obscure ‘Chand Pal Ke Humsafar’ (Mod) that was the most impressive.

2011 was a year filled with good music and many outstanding song picturizations. In this top fifteen we will acknowledge all the choreographers, art directors, cinematographers, performers and many more who have worked very hard to entertain us.
15. ‘Aap Ke Aa Jaane Se’ – Love Breakups Zindagi
This song is not on the soundtrack of Love Breakups Zindagi. It is actually a renewed version of the same song from the movie Khudgarz from 1987. The song comes at a point in the film when the whole family is together and the youngsters in the family perform to a song in order to entertain the guests. And what better song to perform to on a wedding than ‘Aap Ke Aa Jaane Se’. A huge, disco style stage is set up with lights and all. The choreography is a bit old school and brings back memories of the late 80s and 90s, which is quite...

2011, was a year of many highs and several lows for the Indian film industry. There was drama, catfights, box office clashes, chartbusting songs, 100 crore+ blockbusters, scandal, women centric films actually doing well, hook ups and break ups amongst other things.

The forthcoming Imran Khan (I Hate Luv Storys) and Kareena Kapoor (Ra.One) starrer Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu has Amit Trivdei as its composer and Amitabh Bhattacharya as lyricist. The recent unveiling of the theatrical trailer points to a predictable new age romantic comedy trying hard to disguise itself as an off-beat/indie love story. In any event recent romantic comedies, that is, I Hate Luv Storys, Aisha, Break Ke Baad, Love Breakups Zindagi and the like had good music to fill its predictable gaps. Here’s hoping the Trivedi-Bhattacharya team does the same.

It's December and along with the merry spirit of Christmas, its time for the Tax Department to take stock. Last year, it was Akshay Kumar who topped the tax payers list in Bollywood with the highest amount in taxation. This year, the story is no different. Leading the Bollywood brigade in advance tax payment is Akki who shelled out a whopping Rs. 6 crore as advance tax in the third quarter of the financial year 2012. This year Akshay had three releases namely Patiala House, Desi Boyz and Thank You, and for 2 of these films, he was also the co-producer. Others on the list of celebs who have filed their declarations are Ranbir Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan. The Gen-next superstar with films like Rockstar and his brand endorsements has paid Rs. 2.6 crore, while veteran Big B's advance tax amount stands at Rs. 2.5 crore. Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl
Stars: Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Parineeti Chopra, Dippanita Sharma, Aditi Sharma | Written By Devika Bhagat | Directed by Maneesh Sharma
Same director, same leads, same weekend for release, Yashraj Films seem to be hoping the same formula as last year’s Band Baaja Baraat will work again. Labelled as a “rom-con”, Ladies Vs. Ricky Bahl is the story of three girls getting their revenge on a conman who stole money from their families/businesses. As well as Ranveer Singh, playing con-man Ricky Bahl, and Anushka Sharma, playing Ishika, a sales-girl/con-woman for hire, the film introduces three new actresses playing the girls trying to get their money back.
Maneesh Sharma certainly wastes no time, as we’re thrown straight into the first con, and barely five minutes before the first song (Jigar Da Tukda – disappointed that it wasn’t a Ranveer and Anushka song, but its fun...

When you think of Hindi film music I bet that one of the first thoughts that comes to your mind is Sel aka Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The trio has been making the stars and us dance to their tunes in many a hit film. This year alone they scored big with the Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara soundtrack. Rounding out the year they have revisited the world of Don. However, this time they went on a bit of different path for the music of Don 2. We caught up with Ehsaan to find out what went into not only the songs but also the background score for the highly anticipated film!
How do you decide which films you want to be a part of?
All depends. It could be the script, the director or the production house.
What was it like to step back into the world of Don?
Don is an exciting project to be involved with.
