The bungling of Trick ‘r Treat by Warner Bros. — shelving it after well-received festival screenings before unceremoniously dumping it straight to DVD in 2009 — is well-documented, but had it received a traditional theatrical release and underperformed, there’s a chance it may have never entered the cultural zeitgeist. Instead, its authentic cult roots allowed it to blossom into the contemporary classic we celebrate today.
Trick ‘r Treat stands alongside the opening credits of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers as a felicitous distillation of the Halloween atmosphere on celluloid. Sam, the impish demon played by 7-year-old Quinn Lord that serves as the film’s mascot, personifies the tricks and treats of Halloween while serving as the connective tissue between segments.

Will Smith and Steven Spielberg were on a similar wavelength in the 2000s. After he finished licking his wounds from 1999's "Wild Wild West," Big Willie was hungry to prove his mettle as a dramatic actor. Adapting a bit of a one-for-them-one-for-me mentality, Smith earned his first two acting Oscar nods for "Ali" and "The Pursuit of Happyness" in-between nodding his head as Agent J and tearing up the streets of Miami again as Mike Lowrey. Even his tentpoles started to get a little darker and heavier along the way, with the actor anchoring a big screen rendition of Richard Matheson's end-times sci-fi horror tale "I Am Legend" and playing a hard-edged, heavy-drinking superhero in "Hancock."
Spielberg, meanwhile, spent the first decade of the 21st century redefining his work. Really, there was very little he didn't try his hand at during this period, from crafting disquieting, noirish visions of...

Will Smith was once known as one of Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster action stars. The actor was well aware of his standing in the genre. At the same time, he was very much concerned about aging out of those kinds of roles.

Smith’s path to movie stardom initially began with action movies. As an actor, he was steadily building his portfolio back in the 90s in works like Six Degrees of Separation and Fresh Prince of Belair. But Bad Boys was the start of Smith becoming the blockbuster star he’d later become. It was something he owed to filmmaker Michael Bay for insisting that he run around shirtless in the movie for this now iconic scene.

In the movie industry, there are a couple of instances where actors struggle with film scenes with their co-stars for various reasons. And in some cases, actors are cast alongside animals, which also tends to have its own set of challenges based on how well-trained the critter is.
However, it was entirely a bed of roses for Will Smith back in 2007, when the icon had no choice but to spend his days on set with a dog named Abbey. Smith has dominated the industry for many years acting in movies and shows like Bad Boys, The Pursuit of Happiness, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

There are some stories in the history of film that end up being repeated over and over again. Some of these are just simple categories like vampire, werewolf, and zombie films. Some of them get a little more granular and specific like the story of Dracula or Frankenstein’s monster. Finally, we can get even more granular and look at a specific title that has made the rounds a few times. I Am Legend by the wonderful and prolific Richard Matheson was made into three different movies with Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man, and finally I Am Legend. While King Kong and Phantom of the Opera probably have the most, Invasion of the Body Snatchers has the most consistent offerings. The 2007 iteration was a bust but the other 3 are all incredibly solid. With the 90s version turning 30 we thought it was worth seeing if it was a generic...

Writers/Directors David Charbonier and Justin Powell have a way with single-location thrillers that are simplistic in setup but visceral in unrelenting suspense. Their style of lean, efficient storytelling that puts the horror first continues with their latest, Push (formerly titled Open House). Armed with a much bigger location and stylish cinematography, Charbonier and Powell’s latest makes for a more mature effort that delivers (pun intended) in a massive way when it comes to nail-biting tension and intense thrills.

At the heart of every cinematic re-adaptation is a question: Why? Gary Dauberman's Salem's Lot answers with a shrug, defined by disappointingly shallow storytelling and downgraded special effects. Tobe Hooper's 1979 miniseries isn't bulletproof, but neither is it as generic as Dauberman's take on Stephen King's northeastern vampire tale. It's not offensively terrible nor memorably inept, merely rudimentary in its vampiric lore and underwhelming compared to a billion other Count Dracula remixes we’ve endured over the decades. Dauberman's vanilla soft-serve of a King adaptation is begging for added flavors, hardly worth the wait as it crusted over in release-date purgatory.
Lewis Pullman plays a milquetoast Ben Mears, an author who returns to his Maine hometown of Salem’s Lot in search of closure. At the same time, conspicuous furniture seller Richard Straker (Pilou Asbæk) smuggles his vampire master — Kurt Barlow (Alexander Ward) — into a cursed manor that looms over Salem's Lot.

John Amos’s two kids were at odds towards the end of their father’s life and their family feud seems to be poised to carry on after his death.
The iconic actor, known for his work in projects such as West Wing, Good Times, and Roots, passed away in late August 2024. The news of his passing, along with the cause of his death, was announced by his son over a month later.
It was news that shocked the world, including his sister, who only learned of her father’s death through the media.
So, what exactly is the issue between John Amos’ children? Why are they at war? And why is their father’s passing doing more to push them apart then together?

Village Roadshow Entertainment Group, the production and finance company that has backed the Matrix and Ocean’s franchises, is undergoing a small round of layoffs.
The banner, led by CEO Steve Mosko, has cut eight staffers in business affairs, administration, as well as film and TV roles over the course of the past couple of weeks, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The pink slips arrive as the company is exploring strategic options, including taking on more investors.
On the deals front, Village Roadshow has been relatively quiet this year. The company, which has produced more than 90 features with Warner Bros. over the past several decades including Mad Max: Fury Road, Joker and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, has been locked in arbitration with the studio since it filed a lawsuit in February 2022.

Tom Cruise has turned enough impossible dreams into reality to make him a real-life miracle man. But the movie star’s obsession with defying death and his own mortal strength has also made the world respect him even more than they love him. In recent years, fellow movie star Will Smith too has felt the effects of the fan craze that the Mission: Impossible star leaves in his wake.

This article contains major spoilers for "Alien: Romulus."
"Alien: Romulus" takes the "Force Awakens" approach to the legacy sequel formula, serving up a collection of greatest hits moments from across the entire "Alien" franchise, resulting in Easter eggs and references aplenty. It's an approach that won't work for everyone, but there are still plenty of great moments that make this movie special.
That's especially the case when it comes to the final set piece in "Alien: Romulus," wherein the pregnant Kay (Isabela Merced) injects herself with a black goo in order to heal a serious injury. In a new spin on the original film's alien terror sneaking into a spaceship idea, Kay gives birth to a monstrosity that rapidly mutates and matures into a giant Xenomorph with the face of an Engineer — The Offspring. The horror of sex and childbirth has been a theme in the "Alien" property since the very beginning,...

Since his star making performance in Ryan Coogler’s 2013 drama Fruitvale Station, Michael B. Jordan has taken on an eclectic range of films. He’s gone from starring opposite Chadwick Boseman in Marvel’s Black Panther to headlining Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky sequel Creed trilogy, making his directorial debut with 2023’s Creed 3. A fourth Creed film is reportedly in development.
According to Deadline, Jordan has closed a deal with Amazon MGM Studios and Outlier Society to direct and star in a remake of classic thriller The Thomas Crown Affair – this would be the third take on the material, with the first emerging in 1968.
Drew Pearce has written the remake’s script, rewriting a previous draft by Wes Tooke and Justin Britt-Gibson, which is based on the original film.

Will Smith has made many box-office hits during his long career. But there was one hit movie whose failure would’ve been personally devastating for the mega-star.
Will Smith felt ‘I Am Legend’ hinged on his performance Will Smith | Alfredo Estrella / Getty Images
I Am Legend was a project that had been circling around Smith for a long time. He was initially supposed to do the project with Michael Bay. But plans fell through, and he’d eventually develop the movie with filmmaker Francis Lawrence. Smith felt that I Am Legend was a unique take on a genre of film he was already familiar with. It wasn’t the traditional save-the-world blockbuster that helped Smith make a name for himself. Instead, the story would focus on a scientist who was seemingly the last and only human being on an apocalyptic Earth.

Image Source: Warner Bros Although the film itself got a mixed reception, Will Smith won rave reviews for his performance in the 2007 film I Am Legend, in which he played one of the only surviving humans in New York City after a virus devastated the human race. Now, there’s word that Smith will return for a sequel, one that will also star Michael B. Jordan. The film, of course, was based on a novel by noted sci-fi writer Richard Mathieson (who wrote several classic episodes of The Twilight Zone). When the original movie was released, Smith told us he had become immersed in the various versions of the books in order to make his performance in the movie more authentic. Fans left wanting more after 2007’s box office smash “I Am Legend” are in for a treat, as Warner Bros. has officially given the green light to a sequel that will see Will Smith reprising his iconic role as scientist Robert Neville nearly 15 years later. Even more exciting, the studio has tapped acclaimed director Steven Caple Jr. (“Creed II”) to helm the project, reuniting him with Michael B. Jordan, who sources say is currently in negotiations to join Smith in the lead cast.
Based on the seminal 1954 novel by Richard Matheson, the first film told Neville’s solitary struggle to find a cure in a New York City overrun by mysterious mutant creatures after a deadly virus wiped out most of humanity. While the 2007 adaptation took some liberties with the source material, it was a massive box office hit, grossing over $585 million worldwide and cementing Smith as an action star.

Roughly a decade after the release of the final Bioshock game, it appears like the franchise is all set to expand in a different medium – a film. Initially announced in 2022 by Netflix, the film was claimed to be the first movie in a potential cinematic universe.
After a long period of silence, fans finally got an update about the movie from producer Roy Lee. As per Lee, the film is still happening, however, the budget has been significantly reduced. While some will see this as a setback, it could be a blessing in disguise.

We recently found out that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts director Steven Caple Jr. is in line to helm the I Am Legend sequel which will star Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan.
Jordan has a history with Caple Jr. after the filmmaker stepped in to direct Creed II when Ryan Coogler decided not to return for the sequel. Rise of the Beasts did slightly underperform last year but received better reviews than its predecessors and earned a solid $439 million worldwide.
Of course, many of us anticipated him directing Paramount's long-awaited Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover starring Chris Hemsworth (particularly based on comments he'd made while promoting Rise of the Beasts), so why didn't it work out?
According to The InSneider's Jeff Sneider (via SFFGazette.com), "I’m told by multiple sources it’s because he got into a heated argument with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and walked away from the project.

I Am Legend 2 is still in the works and the word on the street is it might have found its director. More on the story below.
I Am Legend 2 has been in the works for a good few years now and we’ve had a somewhat steady flow of news. We already know Will Smith is returning and will be joined by Michael B. Jordan and Akiva Goldsman is penning the script for the long overdue sequel.
Deadline now reports that Steven Caple Jr. is in talks with Warner Bros to helm the sequel. Deadline emphasises that it’s still early days, but there must be something to their story if they felt confident enough to run it.
Caple Jr. previously directed Creed II as well as Transformers: Rise of the Beast and if he does sign on to direct I Am Legend 2, it would be his second collaboration with Michael B.

They’ve been talking about a second “I Am Legend” movie for what feels like forever. But it looks like things might finally be moving forward on the sequel to the hit 2007 post-apocalyptic thriller.
Word on the street is that Warner Bros. has their eye on Steven Caple Jr. to direct. You may remember him from “Creed II” or last year’s “Transformers” flick. Seems like the studio really liked how he balances intense action with characters you care about. Pretty important for a movie like this.
Of course, they’ll need more than just a director – and it looks like they’re putting together an awesome cast too. Will Smith has signed on to return as Dr. Robert Neville, the last man on earth. And he’ll be joined by Michael B. Jordan, who starred in Caple Jr.’s “Creed” movies.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has expressed an interest in snagging Steven Caple Jr. (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) to direct I Am Legend 2, which will star Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan. The outlet notes that it’s still in the early stages, and no deal has been drafted, but it would make for a fun reunion as Caple Jr. directed Jordan in Creed II.
Akiva Goldsman, who is writing and producing I Am Legend 2, recently said, “There will be some good news shortly” about the sequel. He wrote a second draft for the project after meeting with Smith and Jordan, and while he didn’t spill any story details, he did say, “The world returns in a way that is kind of spectacular — an exciting playground for all of us — not your father’s I Am Legend.“

“I Am Legend” fans already knew a sequel was on the way, with Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan set to star. But there’s a slight problem with that news: spoiler alert (for a movie almost 20 years old), Smith’s character died at the end of Francis Lawrence‘s 2007 film. So how is the actor back for the sequel, especially after his persona non grata status in Hollywood has only recently been revoked?

Will Smith is a powerhouse when it comes to minting out one successful movie after another. One such movie of his was 2007’s I Am Legend, in which Smith portrayed the role of Robert Neville. The last survivor of a virus that wiped out the entire city of New York, and towards the end of the movie, Neville sacrifices his life to save humanity.

It was originally announced a couple years back that Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine) was on board to direct a feature film adaptation of the video game BioShock for Netflix, and a new update from producer Roy Lee this week suggests that’s still the case.

Yesterday, we learned that production has begun on an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk (which was, like The Running Man and Thinner, published under the pen name Richard Bachman), with director Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red Sparrow, Slumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, at the helm. Now Deadline has broken the news that the cast of the film includes Star Wars legend Mark Hamill, who just recently finished working on another King adaptation called The Life of Chuck, and Judy Greer of the Halloween and Ant-Man franchises. Details on the characters they’ll be playing have not been revealed. Having read the source material, The Major and the mom of the lead character are the first possibilities that come to my mind.

Lady Gaga‘s “Bad Romance” inspired one of the best and trippiest music videos of all time. The director of the clip explained that it’s about people who are “kind of vampires.” Interestingly, “Bad Romance” didn’t manage to reach No. 1 in the United States — but it did inspire a Meryl Streep cover.

An adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk has been trudging through development hell for decades. At one point, the rights were in the hands of Frank Darabont, who made the King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist. Then the rights passed over to New Line Cinema, where Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark director André Øvredal was hired to direct the film from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt, whose credits include the two most recent Scream movies. While doing the press rounds for his film The Last Voyage of the Demeter last year, Øvredal revealed that he was no longer involved with The Long Walk, and said not making that movie is one of the big regrets of his life. When the big-budget sci-fi/boxing flick hybrid "Real Steel" brawled its way into theaters on October 7, 2011, it was ridiculed by some as "Rock'em Sock'em Robots: The Motion Picture." On one hand, the $110 million-budgeted film's blockbuster pedigree of star Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy did little to suggest the film was anything more than this. But anyone who grew up gorging on Rod Serling's original run of "The Twilight Zone" in syndication or reading the novels and short stories of Richard Matheson knew there was more to "Real Steel," at least in theory, than family friendly mechanical mayhem.
Obviously, with that budget, Disney (which distributed the DreamWorks production) wasn't going to sell the film primarily on its connection to a nearly 50-year-old black-and-white television show. As for Matheson, while he's considered a god of 20th century sci-fi/fantasy/horror literature by publishing heavyweights like Stephen King and Neil Gaiman,...

There's an old saying in Hollywood: never work with children or animals. "A Quiet Place: Day One" star Lupita Nyong'o had her own, more specific rule: never work with cats. "I've been terrified of cats my entire life," the actress admitted in an interview on CBS Mornings. "Terrified. I wouldn't even be in a room with a cat." And even as a cat lover, I can't say that her reasons are entirely wrong: "I just found them suspicious. They're like little lions. If they were any bigger they would eat us."
This created a conflict when Nyong'o read the script for "Day One." The main character, Samira, is in New York City and carting around her pet cat, Frodo, when suddenly Earth is attacked by alien monsters. Frodo is very much one of the stars of the show, but Nyong'o begged director Michael Sarnoski to change Sam's pet to be any other animal.

More than a million and a half people live on the island of Manhattan. “A Quiet Place: Day One” focuses on two: Samira (Lupita Nyong’o), a Stage 4 cancer patient, and Eric (“Stranger Things” actor Joseph Quinn), a far-from-home stranger she stumbles upon after the noise-sensitive aliens crash-land in New York. Neither one seems to have much in the way of survival instinct, which makes them an odd couple on whom to concentrate the Big Apple-set prequel to 2018’s hit creature feature — which is probably why writer-director Michael Sarnoski (“Pig”) decided to give Samira a cat named Frodo. People are expendable, but no one wants to see a service animal torn to shreds by aliens.

Multihyphenate Graham Skipper returns to the Chattanooga Film Festival with his newest feature The Lonely Man With The Ghost Machine– a post-apocalyptic tale about loss, isolation, and creepy crawly monsters that eat humans for dinner. But the messages seemed to hit harder, at least in the moment, because they were ripped in many cases right from the headlines. Decades later,...
