They’ve been talking about a second “I Am Legend” movie for what feels like forever. But it looks like things might finally be moving forward on the sequel to the hit 2007 post-apocalyptic thriller.
Word on the street is that Warner Bros. has their eye on Steven Caple Jr. to direct. You may remember him from “Creed II” or last year’s “Transformers” flick. Seems like the studio really liked how he balances intense action with characters you care about. Pretty important for a movie like this.
Of course, they’ll need more than just a director – and it looks like they’re putting together an awesome cast too. Will Smith has signed on to return as Dr. Robert Neville, the last man on earth. And he’ll be joined by Michael B. Jordan, who starred in Caple Jr.’s “Creed” movies.
Akiva Goldsman, who wrote the first movie, is back as well to pen the sequel. He says meeting with Smith and Jordan has got him fired up. “The world returns in a way that will blow you away. It’s going to be an amazing playground to let loose in.” Sounds promising!
While nothing is official yet with Caple Jr., the studio must really want to team him up with Jordan again after “Creed II.” And his last big robot flick did pretty well despite some so-so reviews. Critics said he nailed the human factor, which will definitely come in handy for “I Am Legend.”
The original was a huge hit, making over $585 million worldwide. Goldsman says this time around, they’re going with the alternate ending where Neville survives. Definitely opens up new possibilities for where the story could go.
With stars like Smith and Jordan, and Goldsman and Caple Jr. at the helm, it seems like the long-awaited sequel may finally be gearing up to surprise and thrill audiences once again in the near future. Fingers crossed it all comes together!
