The application of the death penalty in the sentencing of criminal cases has been an issue that continues to divide this country. A few months ago, at one of the many Gop presidential debates, the moderator noted the number of executions performed while Rick Perry was governor of Texas. This elicited gales of wild applause from the debate audience, while many pundits were shocked at the reaction. For his latest feature film documentary, director Werner Herzog traveled to that state to take a closer look at this divisive topic by focusing in on a horrific crime and the two young men who were brought to justice and met very different fates.
In the small, sleepy town of Conroe, Texas Michael Perry and Jason Burkett were found guilty in the death of Sandra Stotler, her teenage son, and his school pal. It seemed that Perry and Burkett shot the three for a few dollars,...

Susan Sarandon's casual remark about Pope Benedict XVI has caused an uproar with the Catholic League. During Newsday interview with fellow actor and filmmaker Bob Balaban in the Hamptons Saturday, Sarandon shared she sent Sister Helen Prejean's Dead Men Walking to the Pontiff. Sarandon referred to the current Pope as a "Nazi." "The last [pope]," she said, clarifying she sent the tome to Pope John Paul II. "Not this Nazi one we have now." "She's a despicable person to make these kinds of despicable remarks," Bill Donohue, the president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights shared with E! The more things change in Hollywood, the more they stay the same. So Sarah Michelle Gellar has left CAA and returned to ICM and Eddy Yablans. When ICM last repped her, she starred in the iconic Buffy The Vampire Slayer TV series, and feature films including Cruel Intentions and The Grudge. She's still managed by Joanne Colonna at Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Leaving CAA to go back to ICM agent Brian Bunnin is Kevin Zegers, who had a breakout performance in Transamerica and whose other credits include 50 Dead Men Walking, The Perfect Age Of Rock 'N Roll, The Jane Austen Book Club, Normal, and The Narrows. He's still managed by Jason Weinberg and Justin Grey Stone at Untitled.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
The latest in crazy adventure movies, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs offers a world where weather becomes food, where snowball fights morph into ice cream battles. In his review, Todd Gilchrist wrote: "co-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have adapted Ron and Judi Barrett's kids book into a true larger-than-life tale, creating a world that scarcely resembles anything that could or would happen, and manages to be all the more exciting because of it." Buy it on Blu-ray or DVD.

The Final Destination
In this formulaic fourth installment, once again: a premonition helps save a group of people, only for them to then die one by one in grotesque ways. Except this time, it's in 3D. In his review, Eric Snider wrote: "You might just as well stay home and watch one of the other three,...

Toronto -- Canadian Kari Skogland has signed on to direct the Miracle Pictures' drama "Prisoner of Tehran," about a 16-year-old Christian girl forced in 1982 to convert to Islam and marry a prison guard who rescued her from an Iranian firing squad.
The Canadian indie pic is based on the 2007 best-selling memoir "Prisoner of Tehran" by Marina Nemat, whose imprisonment in Tehran's infamous Evin prison and forced marriage eventually ended when her husband was assassinated by a rival faction and his family secured her release.
After a forbidden marriage in a Catholic church to her teenage sweetheart, Nemat fled to Canada in 1991, where she now lives.
Miracle Pictures producer Paul Brown expects Nemat's harrowing tale of abuse and torture after Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution to resonate with movie-going audiences as repression of that country's political opposition continues to grow and western powers attempt to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition (read that here) and was unfortunately unimpressed. At 81 minutes I expected a brisk and entertaining film, but what I got was a film that runs about 20 minutes too long and seemed to get worse and worse as the remaining minutes ticked away. The Final Destination I can't bring myself to watch what I truly hope is the final installment in this frachise again. I was extremely disappointed in this film after my interest was piqued at Comic Con last year. Oh well, can't win 'em all. Trucker Now here's a film that isn't all that bad, but I would only recommend it as a rental at this point. You can read my review for a complete breakdown, but in short it's a well-acted film that falls apart...

I was amazed by the transformation of Kevin Zegers from teen idol to serious actor. Two feature films should be credited for this amazing transition - Fifty Dead Men Walking and The Perfect Age of Rock and Roll. While Fifty Dead Men gave us a glimpse into Kevin's serious side as an actor, Perfect Age gave us his most important acting vehicle to date.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, "Gossip Girl" has hired Kevin Zegers who will be a new love interest for Taylor Momsen's character, little Jenny Humphrey. Kevin will play a character named Damien, and will be Jenny's international love interest for multiple episodes. He will also be a bad boy. What's interesting is that Kevin Zegers is 25 years old in real life, while Taylor is only 16. So I'm wondering how awkward that will be. Hmmm. Nevertheless, Taylor Momsen's Jenny Humphrey character will get more onscreen time, coming up here, pretty soon. Kevin Zegers past acting credits include roles in "TransAmerica," "The Jane Austen Book Club," "50 Dead Men Walking," and "The Narrows."...

Chicago – Although the name Jim Sturgess might not be recognized, his work in ‘Across the Universe’ and ‘21’ has certainly made him identifiable. He is in a newly released film about the Irish Republican Army, “Fifty Dead Man Walking.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0 Sturgess plays real-life Martin McGartland, a stalwart soldier for the Ira in 1980s Belfast who decides to become an informant for Britain’s Special Branch, who were trying to infiltrate the Ira to quell some of the violence in Northern Ireland.
At first lured by money, McGartland becomes more aware of the lives he is saving (thus the title). With help from his contact, Fergus (Ben Kingsley), the conflicted McGartland tries desperately to do the right thing for himself and his family.

Jim Sturgess broke out in a big way in 2007's Across the Universe and solidified his status as an actor to watch with the entertaining (if flawed) 21. You'll be able to see him again soon in the British thriller 50 Dead Men Walking, which premiered in the U.K. last April but opens in limited release in the U.S. this weekend. The plot sounds pretty fantastic: in the late 1980s, a troublemaker from Belfast, Northern Ireland is arrested and subsequently recruited by the British Police to spy on the Ira. Ben Kingsley co-stars as Sturgess's handler. It's based on a true ...

As the bloody sectarian horror show of Northern Ireland in the 20th century has tapered off in the headlines, so has much of its currency in the movies. A few Irish Republican Army gems peek out from time to time (recent Cannes award-winners The Wind That Shakes the Barley and Hunger come to mind), but on the whole, the subject has become almost as quaint as the townships where so many of its earlier films unfolded. Which makes 50 Dead Men Walking both the last of a dying breed and a rejuvenating marvel of sorts: Quintessential Ira grit and exploitation cinema balled up in one fierce package.

Alistair Little was 16 years old in Northern Ireland in 1975. Tensions between Unionist and Nationalists were at boiling point, not only in Belfast but also in many violently segregated small towns. Riots erupted every week in the street and petrol bombs caused the deaths of fathers, sons and brothers.
When Little, a Protestant, learned that Jim Griffin, a Catholic, had been stoking trouble, something, he believed, had to be done. He could no longer sit around and passively wait for matters to improve. With a group of friends, Alistair hotwired a stolen car, donned a ski mask and drove to 37 Hill Street, Griffin’s home. Through the living room window, he shot 19-year-old James Griffin. As he turned to leave, he locked eyes with a boy playing with a soccer ball on the pavement outside. He spared the boy's life.
The boy was Jim Griffin’s brother, Joe. The strain of...

I still contend that Jim Sturgess is gonna be a huge star -- he was amazing in Across the Universe -- but maybe not for this movie. Not that the movie may not be fine; I just don’t see a story about an Irish man who goes to work for British intelligence in Belfast in 1980 can really be a rousing hit with mainstream audiences on either side of the Atlantic... or on either side of the Irish Sea, for that matter. 50 Dead Men Walking played theatrically in the U.K. this past spring and will be available on DVD in Region 2 on September 7; opens in the U.S. on August 21.

It has been fourteen years since writer-director Philip Ridley last made a film. Fourteen very long years. It’s not that he hasn’t been busy in the intervening time, it’s just that he’s been doing his work in live theater but as rewarding as that may be it is no help at all for fans of his work, such as myself, with the misfortune of having an ocean between ourselves and the theaters where these works are actually performed.
Ridley first burst into the public eye in 1990 with arty horror film The Reflecting Skin - which he wrote and directed - and gangster thriller The Krays - which he wrote - films he would follow up with the very Lynchian tale of religious hysteria, The Passion of Darkly Noon, in 1995. But since then? One piece of writing appearing on television and absolutely nothing else, a situation that...

Jim Sturgess was so amazing in Fifty Dead Men Walking, I would watch any film that include Sturgess in the cast without having to bother with what the movie is all about. The guy is not only a talented actor, he is also an awesome singer.

Catchy beats and guitars with barbed-hook riffs are what makes Zombie Rock acts so terrifyingly fun. Germany already holds itself as a European haven for some of the most fun and interesting Psychobilly acts the world has to offer, and Fast Foot takes an interesting twist in the Psychobilly zombie crawl. Formed in 1997, the act has taken the German punk scene with a new take on an old style. Less centered on upright bass and ghoulish motifs than other acts, they take a more direct punk rock approach. Still a very Psychobilly sound, the band refers to itself as Punk & Roll. The result is a very stripped, but nonetheless creepy sound that will have rotting corpses stomping.
Their latest release Dead Men Walking is a fun and randy listen as the band heats up the campy lyrics with fun trucker and redneck hooks. The title track is a zombie walk...

Here’s a nice way to start the week – watch a clip from crime thriller 50 Dead Men Walking, coming to cinemas April 10. Based on the autobiography of undercover agent Martin McGartland, it looks to be a nice alternative to the traditional British fare of romcoms, London gangster tales and films shot in Bath. Take a look below, and check out the trailer here. Your browser does not support inline frames or is currently configured not to display inline frames. .

Here’s the trailer for the British film “Fifty Dead Men Walking” from Kari Skogland (”Riverworld”, “Chicks with Sticks”), starring Jim Sturgess as a British intelligence mole in 1980s Northern Ireland, and Ben Kingsley as his government handler. Rose McGowan is also in there somewhere, although I don’t think I saw her in the trailer. The film is based on the biography of Martin McGartland, which means it’s a true story. Inspired by Martin McGartlands incredible autobiography, Fifty Dead Men Walking is the stunning new action thriller by Kari Skogland about a secret agent working undercover for British security services in Northern Ireland in the late eighties. Over the course of four years, until his betrayal and subsequent discovery, it was estimated that McGartland was responsible for saving the lives of up to fifty men. Starring Ben Kingsley, Jim Sturgess, Kevin Zegers, Natalie Press, Rose McGowan, Tom Collins,...

Kari Skogland’s 50 Dead Men Walking is a film we’ve been keeping an eye on in these parts for a good while now. For one thing it’s a Canadian co-production that actually looks primed to hit theaters, which is a rarity in itself and gets the patriotic juices flowing. For another, it’s based on the life of actual Ira informant Martin McGartland, which makes for some potent source material. And it’s also got a cast that just won’t quit, with Ben Kingsley turning in one of his better recent performances and young Jim Sturgess - who gave a great performance in the not-great blackjack drama 21 - in the lead as McGartland.
But despite being on the lookout and te film playing to much love at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival, there’s been virtually nothing online to share until now. The fine lads at the...

You might think that this is a far-down-the-line sequel to Tim Robbins' Dead Man Walking and that you've missed the last 48, but not so. 50 Dead Men Walking is a Donnie Brasco-esque drama about an Ira informant - and we've got the trailer right here. The film stars Jim Sturgess (21, Across the Universe) as Martin McGartland, a real-life Ira informant who saved 50 lives by informing on the paramilitary organisation. Ben Kingsley plays his contact and handler, with support from Nathalie Press and Rose McGowan. The film's due out here on April 10, and word of mouth in the Empire office is already pretty strong.

Rose McGowan is in hot water with her producers of the new film Fifty Dead Men Walking. While the film was making the rounds in Toronto last week, McGowan told reporters that she would have joined the Irish Republican Army if she had been in Belfast at that time. Rose added that she understands why many in Northern Ireland resorted to violence during their conflict with England.
Fifty Dead Men Walking depicts Martin McGartland's infiltration into the IRA in the late 1980s and also his torture at the hands of the group once his cover was blown. Because these things run deep, McGartland is still in hiding, having escaped from IRA capture in 1991. He was later shot multiple times, allegedly by the IRA, in 1999, before being relocated again.
So you could see why producers of a film that calls itself "an even, nonjudgmental" account of those events might feel...
