Nicolas Cage isn’t looking to adapt to the rise of artificial intelligence in Hollywood any time soon.
The Oscar winner spoke out against the technology during an interview with “The Orchid Thief” author Susan Orlean for The New Yorker. Orlean’s nonfiction book was the source material for Charlie Kaufman’s meta film “Adaptation,” with Cage portraying screenwriter Kaufman (and his fictional twin brother Donald) and Meryl Streep playing Orlean.
Cage explained to Orlean that, just after the interview, he had to undergo a “scan” for his upcoming Prime Video series “Noir,” in which Cage reprises his animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” webslinger role, this time in live-action. He revealed concerns about how that scan of his likeness could ultimately be further manipulated by artificial intelligence technology.
“They have to put me in a computer and match my eye color and change — I don’t know,” Cage said. “They...

Chris Cooper is an Oscar-winning actor who has brought his laconic, folksy presence to dozens of movies, many of which have become modern classics. Let’s take a look back at 17 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri, Cooper cut his teeth in theater before making his film debut at the age of 36 with a lead role in John Sayles‘ “Matewan” (1987). The movie kicked off a decades long collaboration between the actor and director, with the two pairing up for such titles as “City of Hope” (1991), “Lone Star” (1996), “Silver City” (2004) and “Amigo” (2010).
He hit the Oscar jackpot with his supporting turn in Spike Jonze‘s “Adaptation” (2002), a self-reflective comedy about screenwriter Charlie Kaufman‘s (Nicolas Cage) struggles to adapt Susan Orlean‘s (Meryl Streep) nonfiction book “The Orchid Thief.” Cooper played John Laroche, the eccentric, swampy horticulturalist at the center of Orlean’s story.

The “Killers of the Flower Moon” actress, who recently made history as the first Native American woman nominated in the Best Actress Oscar category, is set to lead the adaptation of Yoko Ogawa’s sci-fi novel “Memory Police.” Oscar winner Charlie Kaufman wrote the script, with Reed Morano (an Emmy winner for her work on “The Handmaid’s Tale”) directing.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported the casting, which IndieWire confirmed.
Director Morano and Margot Hand of Picture Films will produce, with Gladstone’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” director Martin Scorsese executive producing alongside novelist Yoko Ogawa. Charlie Kaufman’s (animated) existential ode to overcoming fears is finally here.
“Orion and the Dark,” written by Kaufman and adapted from a YA novel, follows anxiety-ridden elementary schooler Orion (voiced by Jacob Tremblay) as he tries to cope with being afraid of the dark — which actually becomes a physical entity played by Paul Walter Hauser. The Dark whisks Orion away to a land filled with all of his fears, including clowns, fireworks, and ghouls. A “Monsters Inc.”-style movie, Orion befriends the things he is afraid of most, and conquers his anxiety.
Animator Sean Charmatz marks his feature directorial debut with the DreamWorks and Netflix film, based on Emma Yarlett’s novel of the same name. Variety previously reported that a Werner Herzog cameo could be in the works for the animated film.
Peter McCown produces the film with Walt Dohrn and Bonnie Arnold serving as executive producers. “Orion and the Dark...

In Tom Gormican's 2022 film "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent," Pedro Pascal plays Javi Gutierrez, a fun-loving playboy billionaire living in Majorca, Spain. Javi is a huge fan of actor Nicolas Cage and hires him to hang out for a weekend. Cage, playing himself, cautiously accepts the offer, having found himself in a bit of a creative rut; a younger version of Cage appears in visions to lambaste his older self that he is no longer the massive movie star he once was. Javi will spend a great deal of time heaping praise on Cage and eventually reveals that he has a secret collectibles vault full of Cage-related memorabilia. Cage, meanwhile, will be secretly approached by the CIA, and told that Javi is actually a dangerous arms dealer that might be involved in an ongoing kidnapping plot. The film is bright, whimsical, and enjoyable. Cage, as he always does,...

Almost every year there’s at least one actor who sweeps through all the major precursors prior to the Oscars. But this year none of the four acting categories will have had a sweeper through the entire season. The last time a scenario like this played out was actually way back in 2002.
SEECan Andrea Riseborough (‘To Leslie’) pull a last-minute Best Actress Oscar upset?
That year Daniel Day-Lewis (“Gangs of New York”) and Jack Nicholson (“About Schmidt”) tied for Best Actor at Critics Choice. Nicholson went on to win the Golden Globe for Best Film Drama Actor while Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor went to Richard Gere (“Chicago”), who didn’t go on to receive an Oscar nom. Day-Lewis went on to win SAG and BAFTA. Yet the Oscar ended up going to Adrien Brody for “The Pianist.”

“Everything Everywhere All at Once’s” sweep at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards ensured the end of one long-running streak: For the first time in 20 years, there won’t be a single acting sweeper during Oscar season.
Sweeps of the acting categories across the televised awards — Golden Globes, Critics Choice, SAG, BAFTAs and the Oscars — have become increasingly common over the years after BAFTA became an Oscar precursor 22 years ago. Even in very chaotic seasons, there has been at least one category over the past 19 years with a full sweep, like Best Supporting Actor with Heath Ledger (2008’s “The Dark Knight”) or two years ago with Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”).
Heading into the SAG Awards, Cate Blanchett (“TÁR”) was the only performer left who could win all four televised precursors en route to the Oscar after having claimed the drama actress Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award and BAFTA.

"Mayfair Witches," the new AMC+ series based on the book trilogy "Lives of the Mayfair Witches" by Anne Rice, has been looking well outside the realm of supernatural TV dramas for inspiration in season 1. You wouldn't necessarily expect to hear showrunner Esta Spalding and executive producer Michelle Ashford namecheck a 1999 Gulf War movie, but that's exactly what they did in Vanessa Armstrong's /Film interview with the duo.
"Mayfair Witches" stars Alexandra Daddario as Dr. Rowan Mayfair, a neurosurgeon who uncovers her own family link to a dynasty of witches. She's unaware of her powers at first, and this leads to her looking inside people's brains and "popping arteries like bubble gum," as Danielle Ryan put it in her "Mayfair Witches" review. No need for an endoscopy when you have a witch on the case who can show the audience what a person's dying body looks like inside.

Meryl Streep has officially checked into the Arconia. The three-time Oscar winner will join the Season 3 cast of “Only Murders in the Building,” the starring trio of Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez announced on social media.
On Twitter, Martin shared a cast photo featuring “The Devil Wears Prada” actress. “The filming of Season 3 of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ has begun! A cast to dream of,” the veteran actor wrote.
The official Hulu account replied, “It is an Honor to have Meryl in our building!”
Gomez later shared a longer Instagram clip of the cast hanging out on set, where Streep popped up from behind the couch after Rudd teased that the season could certainly “get a little bit better.” In the video, Streep adjusts a pillow for Martin and asks Short if he needs anything, to which the latter replies, “Just the tea that I had asked for half an hour ago.

In 2010, Melissa McBride joined the cast of the recently-concluded zombie series, "The Walking Dead," developed and executive-produced by Frank Darabont. The post-apocalyptic show went on to be one of the most popular and financially successful TV series in history, and even inspired a spin-off series starring McBride and co-star Norman Reedus where the two would reprise their roles as Carol Peletier and Daryl Dixon.
A few months back, McBride made the difficult decision to exit the upcoming series, citing her inability to relocate to Europe to shoot the show, which would have taken her away from the home she's built in Atlanta. It seems like a fitting decision for the same woman who made her breakthrough film debut in Darabont's 2007 adaptation of Stephen King's "The Mist," playing a character credited only as "Woman With Kids at Home."

A meta farce of Hollywood, Reboot stars Greer as one of several down-on-their-luck performers who get a windfall when their schlocky early aughts sitcom gets revived at … Hulu. When Nicolas Cage was first approached about playing a slightly-psychotic version of himself in the movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, he was more than a little hesitant about signing on for it. His fears only grew when he learned that the “Nicolas Cage” character in the movie would be near broke, living in a hotel, quasi-estranged from his wife and teenage daughter, and reduced to making a personal appearance at a birthday party for a wealthy fan in order to pay off his debt. There’s even a recurring bit where a manic,...

The world has been treated to a Nicolas Cage renaissance in the last few years. Ever the prolific actor, I often think of an old College Humor bit that poked fun at his willingness to take any role offered to him. But recent films like "Mandy" and "Pig" are much-needed reminders of Cage's outlandish versatility. Another from way back when is "Adaptation," Spike Jonze's bonkers film about screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's attempts to adapt a book titled "The Orchid Thief."
Cage plays two characters in the film: Charlie and his fictional twin brother Donald. If you've seen "Adaptation" you know that few films ride the line...

The 2022 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Javier Bardem (“Being the Ricardos”), Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”), Andrew Garfield, Will Smith (“King Richard”), and Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”). Smith (16/5) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Cumberbatch (19/5), Garfield (4/1), Washington (9/2), and Bardem (9/2).
All five of these men have contended here at least once before, making theirs the first Best Actor lineup since 1981 to include no first-time acting nominees. Furthermore, it is the very first to consist only of previous lead nominees. The last time this came close to happening was in 2003, when newcomer and eventual victor Adrien Brody (“The Pianist”) competed against category veterans Nicolas Cage (“Adaptation”), Michael Caine (“The Quiet American”), Daniel Day-Lewis (“Gangs of New York”), and Jack Nicholson (“About Schmidt”).

Jack Nicholson’s last Oscar nomination came in 2003, but according to Adrien Brody, he almost skipped the event entirely.
In a new interview with the Sunday Times (via Yahoo), Brody reminisced about his 2003 Oscar win for his performance in “The Pianist.” That year, the Academy Awards were held on March 23, just four days after the United States began its invasion of Iraq. With much of Hollywood uniformly opposed to the war, the invasion cast a shadow that loomed over the entire ceremony. But it was almost much more prominent, as Brody revealed that Nicholson attempted to organize a boycott of the show.
Before the ceremony, Nicholson convened his fellow Best Actor nominees at his house to discuss ways to protest the war. Over scotch and cigars, they debated skipping the Oscars to show solidarity with the Iraqi people, with Nicholson urging the other actors not to attend.
Ultimately, however, they decided to go.

Jack Nicholson wanted to stage a boycott against the 2003 Academy Awards due to the Iraq War, revealed Adrien Brody in a recent interview with the Sunday Times (via Yahoo). The United States’ invasion of Iraq began just days before the 2003 Oscars ceremony. According to Brody, Nicholson invited all of the 2003 best actor nominees over to his house to discuss how they should respond to the war. Nicholson reportedly urged the nominees in the category to boycott the ceremony.
“I said, ‘I don’t know about you guys, but I’m going,’” Brody told the Times. “I said, ‘I kind of have to show up. My parents are coming. This doesn’t come around too often. I know you guys are all winners. You can sit it out. But I can’t.’”

When Daniel Kaluuya won the 2021 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Fred Hampton in “Judas and the Black Messiah,” he became the 77th performer to be honored for a portrayal of a real person. There has been at least one such case across the four acting categories in 19 of the last 20 years, with the 2017 quartet being the last to all win for playing fictional characters. This year, there are nine nominees with the potential to continue the trend, including two whose real-life counterparts are still living.
In Oscar history, it is most common for a win of this kind to come in the Best Actor category. In the nine decades since George Arliss prevailed here for playing Benjamin Disraeli in “Disraeli” (1930), 27 more lead male champs have followed, and they now account for 30% of all victories in the category. The six who have triumphed in the last decade alone...

In “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” Nicolas Cage plays Nicolas Cage, a conceit we get used to in a matter of seconds, even as it turns into a gift that keeps on giving. There’s a reason we get used to it so quickly: Movies with a meta dimension have been with us for years — movies like “The Player,” where Robert Altman cast a galaxy of Hollywood stars as their real-life selves, or “Being John Malkovich,” where John Malkovich played John Malkovich, or “Adaptation,” where Cage played Charlie Kaufman, the screenwriter of the film we happened to be watching. Unlike those movies, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” isn’t a floridly ambitious pretzel-logic art film. , which turns out to be both a cheesy thing and a special thing.

Exclusive: Emmy and Golden Globe winner Brian Cox (Succession) has been tapped as the narrator for Sacrilege: The Unholy Radicalization of Europe, a documentary from director Barry Avrich (Oscar Peterson: Black + White) and his Melbar Entertainment Group that recently wrapped production.
Avrich’s latest explores how Europe became a global centre of extremism, offering illuminating perspectives and personal stories of how radical Islam, political errors, and the failure of immigration and integration government policies changed the course of the continent forever. The film was shot on location in Vienna, Paris, Copenhagen, Nice, and Malmo, and features unprecedented access to former Isis radicals, as well as victims of terrorism, radicalization experts, journalists and clerics such as the Chief Rabbi of Denmark and Nice’s top Imam.
Avrich produced Sacrilege alongside Melissa Coghlan and Mark Selby, also serving as the film’s executive producer. Melbar is looking to release the feature in late fall,...

After two years of egregious snubs, the “Succession” Og Brian Cox finally has a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for the acclaimed HBO series. Cox’s performance as the volcanic billionaire and media mogul Logan Roy netted him an Emmy nomination last year and now two SAG Award bids in both the drama actor and ensemble categories.
Although Cox has never won a SAG Award, he has one of the highest nominations tallies of his fellow contenders, who include two of his four onscreen children. In addition to this year’s bids for “Succession,” Cox has three others for “Nuremberg” and as an ensemble member of the film “Adaptation” and series “Deadwood.” His five citations tie him with Billy Crudup, a double nominee for “The Morning Show” this year and a past ensemble winner for “Spotlight.” Cox’s costars Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin are past nominees as well: Strong...

Eight years ago, Jared Leto won the esteem of his acting peers as he was honored with a Screen Actors Guild Award for his supporting turn in “Dallas Buyers Club.” After receiving a second bid in the category last year for “The Little Things,” he has attained a third for “House of Gucci.” Along with Chris Cooper, he now stands as one of the two most recognized supporting male film actors in SAG Awards history.
In the supporting actor race, Leto faces Ben Affleck (“The Tender Bar”), Bradley Cooper (“Licorice Pizza”), Troy Kotsur (“Coda”) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”). All four of his competitors are first-time supporting nominees, and Kotsur and Smit-McPhee stand out as total SAG newcomers. Cooper has already prevailed against Leto once, as he and his “American Hustle” co-stars bested the cast of “Dallas Buyers Club” in 2014. Affleck has a pair of ensemble victories...

Although Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominees are, on average, recognized later in life than those in any other acting category, there have been plenty of contenders who have strayed from that norm, including the entire 2014 lineup. Their average age of 35 made them the third youngest crop of featured males in academy history behind only the 1957 and 1954 groups. In the end, the oldest of the bunch, 42-year-old Jared Leto, was crowned the winner for “Dallas Buyers Club.”
The quartet Leto defeated included fellow first-timers Barkhad Abdi and Michael Fassbender as well as previous nominees Jonah Hill and Bradley Cooper. Having yet to capture the academy’s attention since his victory, Leto may have a ticket back in this year with his performance in “House of Gucci.” If he is given a shot at competing in the next Best Supporting Actor contest, there is a chance that he will have to defend...

Quiet is not the word that comes to mind when you think of Nicolas Cage. Neither is Oscar. But love him or leave him, Cage was nominated for an Oscar for playing twins in “Adaptation” (directed by Spike Jonze from Charlie Kaufman’s script) and won for his sullen alcoholic in Mike Figgis’ “Leaving Las Vegas.” He has given many more bravura performances over his career, among them Norman Jewison’s romantic Cher vehicle “Moonstruck,” the Coens’ classic comedy “Raising Arizona” opposite Holly Hunter, Martin Scorsese and Paul Schrader’s “Bringing Out the Dead,” and John Woo thriller “Face/Off,” which Cage would love to reprise in a sequel.
He also carried his share of noisy Hollywood actioners, from “Con Air,” “Gone in 60 Seconds,” and “The Rock” to “Snake Eyes” and “National Treasure.” Cage steps up with a strong script and director, so it’s welcome news that the 57-year-old...

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive track from Carter Burwell’s Oscar-shortlisted score for The Tragedy of Macbeth, which is set for release tomorrow via Milan Records, as the film from director Joel Coen premieres globally on Apple TV+.
Coen’s take on William Shakespeare’s classic 17th century play Macbeth watches as Denzel Washington’s Scottish lord is convinced by a trio of witches that he will become the next King of Scotland, subsequently conspiring to seize power with the help of his wife, Lady Macbeth (Frances McDormand).
It’s the latest project to emerge from a career-spanning partnership between Burwell and Coen, dating back to 1984, which has seen the former score almost all of the latter’s films including Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men and True Grit.

After appearing in Adam McKay’s satirical comedy “Don’t Look Up” and Guillermo del Toro’s psychological thriller “Nightmare Alley,” Cate Blanchett could make history at the Screen Actors Guild Awards should either movie receive a bid for film ensemble come Wednesday. If both movies receive ensemble nominations, however, Blanchett will also become the 19th person in SAG Awards history to snag double nominations in the same year, and the fourth person to do it in the last three years.

Is Meryl Streep the greatest film performer of all time? According to Oscar voters over the past 40+ years, that might just be the case with her record-shattering 21 nominations and three wins. But her filmography is filled with gems that didn’t get any awards buzz.
Streep snagged her first Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress for “The Deer Hunter” (1978) and picked up her first trophy in that category the very next year for “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979). She subsequently snagged two prizes in the lead category (“Sophie’s Choice” in 1982 and “The Iron Lady” in 2011) and competed 17 more times: Best Actress for “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” (1981), “Silkwood” (1983), “Out of Africa” (1985), “Ironweed” (1987), “A Cry in the Dark” (1988), “Postcards from the Edge” (1990), “The Bridges of Madison County” (1995), “One True Thing” (1998), “Music of the Heart” (1999), “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006), “Doubt” (2008), “Julie & Julia” (2009), “August: Osage County” (2013), “Florence Foster Jenkins” (2016), and “The Post” (2017); Best Supporting Actress...

Jared Leto has come a long way since the days of expertly leaning against lockers. The Academy Award winner for “Dallas Buyers Club” (2014) currently stars in Ridley Scott’s new film “House of Gucci,” though you probably won’t recognize him. A man known for altering his appearance and disappearing into characters, he’s once again undergone a remarkable transformation to play the balding and overweight Paolo Gucci. However, beneath all the makeup, he’s still Jared Leto, which means it’s probably not surprising that his performance in the film has him staring down the possibility of a nomination for supporting actor at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has published its list of the 101 greatest screenplays of the 21st century, topped by Jordan Peele’s “Get Out.” Peele won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay with the script for his horror movie, which also marked his solo feature directorial debut. Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar-winning “Parasite” screenplay cracked the WGA’s top five along with Charlie Kaufman’s “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Network,” and the Coen Brothers’ “No Country for Old Men.” All of these aforementioned films won screenwriting Oscars.
The remainder of the WGA’s top 10 consists of Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood,” Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds,” Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous,” and Christopher Nolan’s “Memento.” Anderson has three scripts in the top 101, as does Tarantino. “Now, you’re in the sunken place.”
If you recognize that line, you know the film whose script the Writers Guild of America just voted as the best of the past 22 years. Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning Get Out tops the WGA’s just-released list of the “101 Greatest Screenplays of the 21st Century (So Far)”. See the full list below.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Social Network, Parasite, No Country for Old Men and Moonlight round out the top six. All of them won a Screenplay Oscar, but three of the next four on the WGA’s list — There Will Be Blood (No. 7), Inglorious Basterds (No. 8) and Memento (No. 10) — did not. The No. 9 script, Almost Famous, took Academy Award for Adapted Screenplay.

The Oscar season may not have officially begun, but three talented leading men — Nicolas Cage (“Pig“), Matt Damon (“Stillwater“) and Winston Duke (“Nine Days“) — are all delivering awards-worthy performances in three very unconventional movies. Likely to face an uphill battle on the awards circuit, the right campaign and support from critics could help them gain some traction in the awards game.
It’s time we all have a serious talk about Nicolas Cage. It should be no surprise that he delivers a beautifully affecting turn as Rob, a truffle forager who hunts the person who stole his beloved pig, and yet, some still find Cage more worthy of memes than trophies. The 57-year-old actor’s overstuffed filmography is full of both box office successes (“The Rock” and “Face/Off”) and critical misfires (“Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” and “Windtalkers”). Cage’s media persona plays up his zany antics, and surely Andy Samberg’s...

Photo: ‘Pig’/Neon Nicolas Cage has had a rather illustrious and controversial career until today. The star roared onto the film scene in the ’90s and early 2000’s with hit pieces like David Lynch’s ‘Wild at Heart’, ‘Leaving Las Vegas’, and ‘Adaptation.’ with the latter two films scoring him Academy Award nominations for Best Actor. Cage did all of this before the first iPhone was released. It was after the actor achieved megastardom that his reputation began to dirty; taking roles in poor films and leading a contentious lifestyle turned the once-heralded actor into something of a joke. At the 2021 Academy Awards on April 25, “Nomadland” filmmaker Chloe Zhao could make history with the most individual Oscar wins since Walt Disney. With nominations in Best Picture (Zhao is a producer of her film), Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing, Zhao is already the most recognized female filmmaker in the history of the Academy Awards with four nominations. But if she manages a clean sweep of the categories, it would allow her to match Disney’s incredible 1954 performance, where he won a record four Oscars from a record six nominations.
But even if she’s able to match the legendary mogul, Disney will remain in the record books for his cumulative Oscars history. Ahead, a look at who has the most Academy Awards in history.
