Gwyneth Paltrow hasn’t sought out many roles in the last decade, preferring instead to occasionally pop up as Pepper Potts in a Marvel film, or just focus on her lifestyle brand, Goop. Despite being one of the biggest female stars in Hollywood at one point, Paltrow has been absent from our screens for almost a decade – with the exception of those rare Marvel appearances.

The Oscar winner and Goop mastermind is joining Timothée Chalamet in Josh Safdie’s ping pong movie “Marty Supreme.” The project marks Paltrow’s first on-screen movie role since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”

No information was given about Paltrow’s role.

Plot details for “Marty Supreme” are kept under wraps, but studio A24 posted an image of a table tennis ball with the words “coming soon” after Variety broke news of the project in July.

Gwyneth Paltrow is making her return to the big screen for the first time in five years. The “Shakespeare in Love” Oscar winner will join Timothée Chalamet in “Marty Supreme,” a new film for A24 about a ping pong champion, directed by Josh Safdie.

Since reprising her role as Pepper Potts in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” Paltrow has somewhat stepped away from Hollywood (she also appeared in the series “The Politician” in 2020), saying she doesn’t miss screen acting and had a desire to one day do a Broadway play.

She did, however, joke that if anyone could get her back to acting, it would be Robert Downey Jr., her “Iron Man” co-star. Coincidentally, Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as mega villain Doctor Doom — though it’s not as if Paltrow has ever been super aware of the goings on of the MCU.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, the pic has been reported as being loosely inspired by pro ping pong player Marty Reisman. At the same time, sources close to the production stress that it’s a fictionalized original, rather than a biopic. It’s unclear for the moment who Paltrow will be playing.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach may soon be a household name due to his standout supporting role as Richie Jerimovich on the hit FX (for Hulu) television series “The Bear.” And if that doesn’t do it, perhaps his recently announced casting as Ben Grimm aka The Thing in Marvel’s film version of “The Fantastic Four” will.

Of course, there are some who have been all-in on Moss-Bachrach since his performance as Desi on HBO’s “Girls.” Those playing catchup on his career should perhaps start with an even-earlier role that stands out for many now in retrospect — a brief appearance as Frederick the bellboy in Wes Anderson’s “The Royal Tenenbaums.” With a mop of floppy curls under a round hotel cap, Moss-Bachrach was only 23 at the time of filming, but held his own against scene partner and legendary screen actor Gene Hackman.

Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.

When we think of the greatest actors who opted to retire, there are really so few that ended on a high note. Daniel Day-Lewis in Phantom Thread is the first one that comes to mind, but who else would even be close? During this year's Academy Awards, at least one longstanding wrong was finally righted. Even as someone who's generally found Wes Anderson's work to be somewhat hit or miss, it's always felt like a serious oversight that the acclaimed filmmaker had yet to win a single Oscar. Even an Academy Awards telecast as satisfying as the 96th Oscars has some disappointing moments. From missed speeches to missed opportunities to capitalize on its presenters and a misguided attempt to honor those we’ve lost, here are four of the misfires from the Sunday, Mar. 10 telecast.

Wes Anderson misses his first Oscar win

Yes, many folks were displeased about someone of Wes Anderson’s stature crashing the Best Live Action Short category, but the majority of Oscar voters deemed “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” the best of this year’s nominees. The acclaimed director has seven prior nominations for features “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Moonrise Kingdom,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “Isle of Dogs” but had surprisingly never taken home a trophy, so it would have been joyous to see him ascend the Oscar stage, statuette in hand, and deliver a trademark idiosyncratic acceptance speech.

Wes Anderson is officially an Oscar winner, but he wasn’t in attendance to accept his award.

The 54-year-old filmmaker won the award for Best Live Action Short Film for his film The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, which is streaming on Netflix right now.

This was Wes’ eighth nomination after previously being nominated for his movies The Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, three noms for The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Isle of Dogs.

Wes Anderson has won an Academy Award for the live-action short, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, marking the very first time the acclaimed director has actually won an Oscar.

In the past, Anderson has been nominated for seven Oscars — first with 2001’s The Royal Tenenbaums — but has never won. Some of his films have received Hollywood’s highest accolade, like when Grand Budapest Hotel took home four awards at the 2015 Oscars, but in those cases, even though Anderson’s films won awards, the director himself was not involved in the award.

Now, with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, though, Anderson is a proper Academy Award-winner. He was not at the ceremony itself, but the award was accepted on his behalf by presenters Issa Rae and Ramy Youssef.

One of the greatest crime movies of all time, "The French Connection" is William Friedkin's gritty drama based on a true story. Gene Hackman stars as Detective Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle, a no-nonsense, rule-breaking cop who gets caught up investigating a case in which the Italian mob is bringing drugs into America with the help of a French heroin-smuggling syndicate. But this isn't an open-and-shut case. The lawmen are seemingly foiled at every turn, and things end on a shocking, bleak note. Marvel's first family is coming back to theaters after two mixed-to-horrendous previous attempts. Now, Marvel Studios is hoping that third time's the charm when it comes to the Fantastic Four, and we finally have confirmation of who will don the suits. We already knew that Pedro Pascal had signed on to play Reed Richards — following a brief tease in "Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness" where John Krasinski played an alternate universe version of Mr. Fantastic -- but there were several rumors as to who would play the rest of the family in what's simply titled "The Fantastic 4."

Well, get ready, because Pascal is now officially being joined by Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm. Like all superhero movies, the film's cast is made up of actors who you have undoubtedly seen before in projects both big and small.

Gene Hackman is one of the most versatile and accomplished character actors on film and is appreciated by critics and audiences for his clean, no-nonsense style of acting. In his film work, Hackman was famed for the every-man quality to his work with which audiences of all types could identify which he demonstrated in the more than 80 films in which he appeared.

Throughout his film career which lasted more than half a century, Hackman’s subtle work has been showered with honors. He has won two Academy Awards (for 1971’s “The French Connection” with William Friedkin and 1992’s “Unforgiven” with Clint Eastwood) from five nominations. He has been given an honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes, while winning three competitive Globes from eight total nominations and is a Screen Actors Guild Award winner from his two nominations.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science's membership has always viewed Wes Anderson with wary respect. Beginning with 2001's "The Royal Tenenbaums," the idiosyncratic filmmaker has been nominated for eight Oscars, but aside from "The Grand Budapest Hotel", the majority of voters seem puzzled by his movies. Some people outright hate them and trust me when I say that they cannot be swayed.

And if a film as warm and brilliantly constructed as last year's "Asteroid City" can't even snag what would've been Anderson's fourth Best Original Screenplay nod, there's no reason to believe he'll ever win over enough voters to take home a competitive Oscar in any of the feature categories (unless he drops the artifice and makes a more straightforward comedy about eccentrics like "Terms of Endearment").

The shorts categories, however, are a different story.

The real Bonnie and Clyde may have died in 1933, but the legend of the couple's crime spree lives on in the form of songs, stories, and one groundbreaking movie. Arthur Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde" took Hollywood by storm when it hit theaters in 1967, generating controversy for its on-screen violence and sensuality -- and kick-starting nationwide conversations about who deserves to be the subject of a movie. Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” is a nesting doll of a film—a television broadcast of a documentary about a play, assembled with the same precision and detail as Anderson’s “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “The French Dispatch” among others. Thematically, the connective tissue between its layers of reality, like many of those earlier films, is the notion and processing of loss. But Anderson, who co-wrote the movie with longtime collaborator Roman Coppola, says one of his longtime leading men inspired him to assemble its pieces in the first place.
