Part of the movie was filmed at the then open Tennessee State Prison in Nashville. Some of the real inmates and correctional officers were filmed.
The well known Starlite Club on Dickerson Road in Nashville was used in several scenes. The club is still in business.
Joe Don Baker and director Phil Karlson originally worked together on the surprise hit Walking Tall. They both passed on the sequel Walking Tall Part II to work on this film. Walking Tall Part II ended up being one of the summer's biggest hits in 1975, while this movie was a flop.
The scene in which Ron Lewis (Baker) is being released from prison shows him leaving through the trap gate that opened onto the lower compound actually going into prison.
