The 2024 International Emmy Awards took place Monday night in New York, honoring the finest shows made outside of the United States, with nominees coming from 21 countries, per The Hollywood Reporter.

The night’s big winners were Apple TV+’s French-Japanese anime adaptation “Drops of God,” which won best drama series; Netflix’s Argentinian satire “División Palermo” winning best comedy series; Netflix’s German thriller “Liebes Kind” winning best limited series; Timothy Spall, who won best actor for the BBC’s crime drama “The Sixth Commandment;” and Aokbab-Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying, who won best actress for Netflix’s Thai chef drama “Hunger.”

The best in global television was honored in New York on Monday night at the 2024 International Emmy Awards, with winners picked across nominees from 21 countries.

The big winners on the night were Drops of God winning best drama series, Timothy Spall winning best actor, Aokbab-Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying winning best actress, División Palermo winning best comedy and Liebes Kind winning best miniseries.

In the best drama category, Apple TV+’s French-American-Japanese manga adaptation Drops of God, produced by Legendary Television, won out against 1980s-set Australian series The Newsreader; the Amazon Prime Video Argentina espionage thriller Yosi, the Regretful Spy; and the Disney+/Hotstar series The Night Manager, an Indian adaptation of the 2016 BBC show of the same name.

British acting legend Timothy Spall went into the ceremony as favorite in the best actor category, nominated for his turn in the BBC true-crime tale The Sixth Commandment, and duly walked away with the award.

French-Japanese drama series “Les Gouttes de Dieu [Drops of God],” Argentinian comedy series “División Palermo” and actor Timothy Spall were among the winners at the 52nd annual International Emmy Awards.

Hosted by stand-up comedian Vir Das, the ceremony took place Monday at the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel. This year, 21 countries were represented across 14 categories and 56 nominees.

During the evening, French actor Omar Sy presented the International Emmy Directorate Award to Gaumont CEO Sidonie Dumas, while writer and producer David E. Kelley received the International Emmys Founder Award from Michael Pressman.

Streaming giants are a force to be reckoned with in the race for the 52nd International Emmys, organized by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, as they approach the awards on Nov. 25 in New York.

Nominees for drama series include Season 2 of Prime Video’s Argentine thriller “Yosi, the Regretful Spy,” based on the real story of an Argentine police agent who infiltrates a Jewish community. Also nominated is Disney+ Hotstar’s Indian remake of BBC/AMC’s John le Carré adaptation “The Night Manager,” about a corrupt and dangerous arms dealer.

They compete alongside Apple TV+’s “Drops of God,” adapted from a manga series, about the estranged daughter of a French wine expert who must compete with her father’s Japanese protégé in a series of tests; and Season 2 of Prime Video’s “The Newsreader,” about the cut-throat world of Australian news media in the 1980s.

Andrew Cumming’s Stone Age thriller Out Of Darkness walked away with three awards at last night’s (November 17) Bafta Scotland ceremony, that took place in Glasgow.

Clelia Mountford is exiting Bad Sisters maker Merman to launch an All3 Media-backed scripted indie.

Sunburnt Penguin will sit within All3’s scripted ranks, focusing on drama and comedy projects. It debuts with a development slate in place.

Mountford co-founded Merman with Sharon Horgan in 2014 and together they built a TV and film production business in the UK and U.S. with credits for the likes of Apple TV+’s comedy Bad Sisters, which is set to debut a second season on November 13; BBC comedies Motherland and There She Goes, Channel 4 and Prime Video’s Catastrophe; Channel 4/Hulu co-pro This Way Up; and Sky drama Dreamland. Mountford also executive produced the upcoming Channel 4 series Disability Benefits with Rosie Jones and Amandaland for BBC One, starring Lucy Punch.

The shows vying for the Drama Series prize are Australia’s The Newsreader, Argentina’s Yosi, the Regretful Spy, France’s Drops of God and India’s The Night Manager. Three of those countries also are in the running for the Comedy Series prize as Australia’s Deadloch, Argentina’s División Palermo, France’s Hpi — whose American remake High Potential premiered on ABC this week — battle South Korea’s Daily Dose of Sunshine.

Argentina also is in the running for the Arts Programming award with Virgilio, alongside Poland’s Piano Forte, the UK’s Robbie Williams and Japan’s Who I Am Life. Winners will pick up their hardware November 25 at the International Emmy Awards Gala in New York City.

The satellite provider claims that BritBox has been unlawfully using its patented adaptive bitrate technology, and has ignored communications regarding the matter from Dish for years.

The satellite provider is alleging that BritBox has been using some of its tech without a license, and according to Cablefax has hauled the streamer into court to settle the issue.

Xfinity subscribers will be able to add BritBox to their subscription plans at $7.99 per month, or $79.99 per year, the same as other markets, including Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Roku. Exclusive: Rachael Leigh Cook, star of ‘90s movies including She’s All That, has signed a wide-ranging deal with Fox’s Marvista Entertainment.

The pact will see Cook develop, produce and act in a number of projects including a holiday film and There She Goes (w/t), a feature loosely based on her real-life experiences.

It comes as Cook is starring in Netflix’s A Tourist’s Guide to Love, which launches this month.

The deal is one of the highest profile partnerships unveiled by Marvista Entertainment since it was acquired by Fox Entertainment in December 2021.

Leigh Cook will develop and produce several projects across genres over the next few years via her production company Ben’s Sister Productions. She will work in front of and behind the camera.

The deal was shepherded by Hannah Pillemer, EVP, Creative Affairs, MarVista Entertainment.

Soumya Sriraman, the former BritBox CEO who joined Amazon to lead its Prime Video Channels business in the U.S., is stepping down after two years at the SVOD.

Sources indicate the executive is still at Amazon but will be leaving imminently for another role elsewhere.

Sriraman is best known for her work pioneering the best-of-British streaming service BritBox in the U.S., where she is based. The SVOD launched there in 2017 and quickly reached 250,000 subscribers in one year. By the time Sriraman departed, in October 2020, the service had more than 1.5 million subscribers. The successful U.S. launch allowed joint operators BBC Studios and ITV to expand the brand to other markets, including Australia and Canada.

David Tennant, French comedy Call My Agent and Israeli drama Tehran are among those vying for prizes at the International Emmy Awards this year. Nominations for the awards this year saw 44 nominees across 11 categories and a record number of 24 countries.

Tennant is attached to star and executive produce alongside his wife, actor Georgia Tennant. The project is written/executive produced by WGA Award-nominated showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters (Agent Carter) and directed/executive produced by Emmy-, BAFTA- and DGA-nominated director Julie Anne Robinson.

In Hide, a Jekyll & Hyde tale by way of a conspiracy thriller, a disgraced journalist (David Tennant) stumbles upon a story that could resurrect his career. But he quickly learns he’s seen something he shouldn’t have, and is now the target of unknown adversaries who will do anything to silence him. On the run as people around him go missing or die, a serious accident has an extraordinary side effect, and he realizes there are monsters in the world – and he may be one of them.

BritBox North America, the BBC Studios and ITV-backed SVOD service specializing in British content, and the BBC have commissioned crime drama “Hope Street.”

The ensemble serial is set in the fictional town of Port Devine in Northern Ireland, and will focus on its police department, and the mysterious arrival of English detective constable Alimah Khan, the first Muslim police officer in the town’s history.

The cast includes Brid Brennan (“Brooklyn”), Des McAleer (“The Crown”), Ciaran McMenamin (“Primeval”) and Amara Karan (“The Night of”).

The show is created by Susanne Farrell (“Dirty God”) and Paul Marquess (“London Kills”), and written by Farrell, Jess Lea (“Eastenders”), Christine Murphy (“Emmerdale”), Stuart Drennan (“Hollyoaks”), and Shazia Rashid (“Eastenders”). It is executive produced by Donna Wiffen (“The Bill”) and Marquess for Long Story TV.

“Hope Street” will be made with the support of Northern Ireland Screen. It will premiere exclusively on BritBox in the U.

Soumya Sriraman, after stepping down as president and CEO of streaming service BritBox, is joining tech giant Amazon as head of its U.S. Prime Video Channels business.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Sriraman would leave BritBox, a joint venture of BBC Studios and ITV, at the end of October. Amazon’s hire of Srirman was first reported by Deadline.

Amazon offers Prime members the option to subscribe to multiple live TV services through Prime Video Channels, which in the U.S. include HBO, Showtime, Starz, AMC Plus, BET Plus and CBS All Access, which first launched on Prime more than two years ago. Amazon’s video entertainment business is overseen by Mike Hopkins, former Sony Pictures Television chairman who joined the company as senior VP of Prime Video and Amazon Studios in February.

BritBox, launched in 2017, now counts more than 1.5 million subscribers for the streaming service stocked with British TV programming.
