Nicole Kidman will be honored with the International Star Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

The Film Awards will take place on Jan. 3, 2025, with the festival running from Jan. 2 to Jan. 13.

Veteran executive Josh McLaughlin is headed to Nine Stories Productions, the company run by actor Jake Gyllenhaal.

McLaughlin most recently worked at his own shingle, Wink Pictures. Before that, he spent ten years at Focus Features, most recently as president of production, with his projects including Spike Lee’s Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman, filmmaker Kasi Lemmons’s Harriet Tubman feature Harriet, Joe Wright’s Winston Churchill biopic The Darkest Hour and Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Phantom Thread. He also worked with David Leitch on the Charlize Theron action movie Atomic Blonde and Joel Edgerton on Boy Erased, about a young man sent to gay conversion therapy.

He previously worked at Chernin Entertainment and The Mark Gordon Company.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s company Nine Stories Productions has hired Josh McLaughlin as its new president.

In his new role, McLaughlin will work alongside Gyllenhaal to develop a slate of projects. As recently announced, the company has closed a three-year, first-look film deal with Amazon MGM Studios. The pact includes theatrical, as well as streaming releases.

“We are thrilled to welcome Josh to Nine Stories as president. I greatly admire his wealth of experience and deep industry knowledge,” Gyllenhaal said in a statement. “I look forward to working together to expand our slate of dynamic projects across film, television, and stage.”

Sony’s reboot of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” has found its principal cast.

Camila Mendes, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Haur-King are in talks to join the cast of the 1997 horror flick’s redux.

The original film followed four young friends bound by a tragic accident who are reunited when they find themselves being stalked by a hook-wielding maniac. The film became a cult classic, earned over $125 million worldwide and led to the sequel “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” Original stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt are in talks to return.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (“Do Revenge”) is directing the film, which is written by Sam Lansky and Kaytin Robinson off a draft by Leah McKendrick. Neal Moritz is producing.

Sony Pictures will release the film in theaters on July 18, 2025.

George Clooney says the Ocean’s gang could get back together after reading a “great script” for another film in the starry heist series. Speaking with Uproxx about his upcoming movie The Boys in the Boat, Clooney revealed a new Ocean’s film could find the crew from the trilogy reuniting for events set after Ocean’s 13. “We have a really good script for another ‘Ocean’s’ now, so we may end up doing another one. It’s actually a great script,” Clooney told Uproxx.

Amidst such a crowded field, the Jehovah’s Witness drama “You Can Live Forever” doesn’t quite stand out, short of opening a door into one of the lesser explored religious sects. Though the well-crafted film makes use of a unique regional setting for some moving moments, its straightforward approach to well-worn territory offers few surprises.

Legendary Entertainment and HBO serve as co-studios after what was described as a highly competitive bidding situation.

Paramount+ is adding another big name to the family.

The streaming service announced today that Academy Award® winner Nicole Kidman is set to star in the upcoming original series Lioness.

The series also stars Zoe Saldaña and Laysla De Oliveira.

Kidman will also serve as an executive producer under her production company, Blossom Films.

From Academy Award nominee Taylor Sheridan, Lioness is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios exclusively for Paramount+.  

"Lioness is based on a real-life CIA program and follows Cruz Manuelos (De Oliveira), a rough-around-the-edges but passionate young Marine recruited to join the CIA's Lioness Engagement Team to help bring down a terrorist organization from within," according to the streaming service's description.

Saldaña will play Joe, the station chief of the Lioness program tasked with training, managing, and leading her female undercover operatives.

For those that had the chance to see Rian Johnson’s sequel to Knives Out, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, over the Thanksgiving weekend, you were treated to a funny, twisty tale of murder featuring no less than a murderers’ row of talent. Joe Alwyn has joined Emma Stone in Yorgos Lanthimos’ next movie, And.

Alwyn, who had a breakout role in Ang Lee’s literary adaptation Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, also starred in Lanthimos’ The Favourite alongside Stone. “We are so excited to be collaborating with Joe once again after our extraordinary journey together on The Favourite. He is a brilliant actor and a welcome addition to the all-star cast Yorgos has put together here.” Searchlight Pictures presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum said in a statement.

Jamie Babbit's 1999 film "But I'm a Cheerleader" is a broad, colorful satire that takes aim at that most deserving of targets: conversion camps for teens. So-called conversion therapy, openly lambasted by the Human Rights Campaign, is the attempt to alter a young person's sexual orientation or gender identity, often using any number of abusive or manipulative means. As of this writing, conversion therapy is illegal in France, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Albania, Canada, and multiple U.S. States. Bans are pending in other countries. Many of these conversion camps are run by church groups, "ex-gay" ministries, and other non-profit organizations. Many people who have run said camps have come out to denounce them as psychologically torturous.

These are the three words that greet visitors entering Whilster Camp, the fictional conversion therapy program at the center of John Logan’s sinister directorial debut They/Them. From a distance, the camp and its surrounding acreage resemble any other: Log cabins dot the premise, the waters of the serene lake glisten in the sun, the sky is a clear blue. The counselors beam and recite banal motivations. But the camp is a menacing place — a site where Owen Whilster (a brilliant Kevin Bacon), its director, runs a week-long program to turn gay young adults straight.

Conversion therapy — a delusional concept — dates back to at least the 19th century, when Albert von Schrenck-Notzing, a German psychiatrist, convinced a crowd that he had turned a gay man straight through hypnosis. His experiment set an alarming precedent and birthed an entire field — now...

Of the many positive trends “Get Out” ushered forth — the highbrow-ification of horror, irrefutable proof that Black stories can rock the box office — there’s also been a proliferation of socially conscious horror with somewhat mixed results. Set at a janky gay conversion camp, this Blumhouse-produced, Peacock-released LGBT empowerment exercise presents itself as a cross between “Friday the 13th” and “But I’m a Cheerleader.” Alas, it’s so committed to affirmational messages about queer identity not being a choice, a condition or a legitimate motive to get axed by a deranged serial killer, that the movie all but forgets to be scary — although enlisting Kevin Bacon as too-genial-to-be-trusted camp overseer Owen Whistler nearly makes it work.

Apple is adapting the Blake Crouch novel “Dark Matter” as a series with Joel Edgerton set to star, Variety has learned.

The nine-episode series will follow Jason Dessen (Edgerton), a physicist, professor, and family man who – one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago – is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the multiverse of lives he could have lived. In this labyrinth of mind-bending realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.

Crouch is adapting the book for the screen and will also serve as executive producer and showrunner. Edgerton will executive produce in addition to starring. Matt Tolmach and David Manpearl of Matt Tolmach Productions will also executive. Louis Leterrier will direct the first four episodes.

Troye Sivan remembers that first time he got tested for HIV. “I was in a new relationship and I wanted to have sex,” he recalls on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “We both went and got tested and once we were all clear, it was all good to go.”
