On June 2, 2018, FX premiered Pose, a drama that put the spotlight on the ball culture of New York City in the ’80s. The series created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Steven Canals made television history with the largest number of transgender actors in series regular roles for a scripted series. In addition, it put narratives of LGBTQ people of color front and center in a way that hasn’t been done before — and actress Mj Rodriguez was the moral center of it all.
Rodriguez, who was part of the culture-defining ball scene in real life, has a theater and music background, having attended Berklee College of Music. She appeared in theater productions including an Off-Broadway edition of Rent and most recently starring in the Pasadena Playhouse production of Little Shop of Horrors. October is off to a spooky good start so far on Netflix, as the platform has already added, among other things, Rob Zombie’s wild House of 1000 Corpses, which has been terrifying viewers over the past week. But of course, there’s also a considerable collection of movies and shows from other genres for those less inclined to enjoy some seasonal scares, such as Jim Carrey’s comedy Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, the emotional Clint Eastwood drama Gran Torino and Will Ferrell’s unusual Stranger Than Fiction, to name just a few.
Today marks a notably quieter day for Netflix, however. Only five pieces of content are available in the service’s newest drop, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a few worthwhile additions that you may want to take a look at. In fact, the latest American Pie movie just hit the platform, with...

Netflix was ahead of the game for October, releasing its “Netflix and Chills” horror lineup in anticipation of the Halloween season. Now the streaming giant has unveiled its full lineup for October, and believe it or not: horror remains at the forefront of its strategy.
The biggest release this month is undoubtedly The Haunting of Bly Manor, Mike Flanagan’s long-awaited followup to terrifying Haunting of Hill House. That arrives on Oct. 9. The film side of things is where most of Netflix’s other horror originals reside, with Hubie Halloween (Oct. 7), A Babysitters’ Guide to Monster Hunting (Oct. 15), and Rebecca (Oct. 22) all making their debut.
Some non-horror originals of note this month include high school drama Grand Army (Oct. 16) and the Anya-Taylor Joy-starring chess story The Queen’s Gambit (Oct. 26). Aaron Sorkin’s latest film, The Trial of the Chicago 7, arrives on Oct. 16.

Snowpiercer will finally get the wheels moving this spring -- almost five years after the TV adaptation entered development.
The series will receive its highly anticipated premiere Sunday, May 31 at 9/8c.
The series was initially slated to air on TNT, but was later moved to the comedy-heavy TBS, leading to many wondering what was going on.
However, the network later reversed that decision and moved Snowpiercer back to TNT.
The series also received a major setback when it was announced that showrunner Josh Friedman was stepping away from the adaptation.
Snowpiercer follows the remaining members of the human race seven years after an ice age turns the world into a ball of ice.
The final group of people alive are aboard a giant train that makes its way around the globe, and will explore “class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival,” according to the official description.

Indya Moore got their start as a model before turning attention to film and television. After standout work in independent films (such as “Saturday Church”), Moore landed the role of Angel in FX’s ballroom culture period drama. Many of Moore’s first season scenes focused on exploring Angel’s relationship with white-collar Stan (Evan Peters), but in the sixth episode, entitled “Love Is the Message,” Angel had to explain that relationship to his wife (Kate Mara), allowing Moore to show off a new kind of strength.

Indya Moore is to star in an adaptation of "Frankenstein" that is described as a genderbending retelling of the classic story with a modern twist.
Moore, who plays Angel in Ryan Murphy's new FX drama "Pose," will appear in the series "Magic Hour" and is also credited as executive producer.
On the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley’s "Frankenstein," the TV series follows a mysterious young woman who wakes up one morning without a soul and roams the streets of Tokyo in search of one.
Moore is one of a record-breaking five trans actors who have taken leading roles in "Pose," set within the ball scene of 1980s New York and co-created by Murphy, the creative force behind "American Horror Story," "Glee," and "Feud." The first season began airing on June 3 and runs until July 22.
Moore previously starred in musical drama 'Saturday Church,' which debuted at Tribeca and picked up several awards at LGBTQ film festivals in 2017.
In "Magic Hour," she stars as Bella alongside a cast that also includes Yuka Taga and Niclas Ericsson.
The series will shoot on location in Tokyo and New York City, with the Japanese portion of the production understood to have wrapped on July 4.

To watch someone truly find themselves and become who they truly are is one of the most beautiful things in the world. Films celebrate this in different ways, whether it be a celebration of the embrace of a certain art form, whether it be the way that love can draw “you” out, and most important in this age, the discovery of one’s identity. Of one’s rightful status of personhood. Luckily for us, Saturday Church celebrates all three of these things in one of the most euphoric ways ever put to film. As Timothée Chalamet fever sweeps the country, and “Call Me By Your Name” envelops audiences in the golden hue of Italian summer romance, the future of queer cinema looks bright indeed. Beyond our Adonis-adorned Oscar contender, 2017 delivered an array of satisfying gay storylines; including the breathtaking French epic “Bpm (Beats Per Minute),” the underrated Billie Jean King biopic “Battle of the Sexes,” and Sebastian Lelio’s bittersweet romance “A Fantastic Woman.”
Gone are the days when queer cinephiles counted their lucky stars for one gay-related film a year, a trend that films like “Moonlight” and “Carol” seem to have nipped in the bud once and for all.

Saturday Church is the sort of debut indie feature that would be best played with the sound off. In some ways, this is more of a compliment to the film’s virtues than a criticism. In today’s supersaturated, content-driven, post-Sundance indie feature market, it’s often the case that the writing is the most obviously lacking, followed closely by poorly conceived performances, which are often the natural extension of a lazily constructed script. Turn the sound off and a large swath of those common first-effort pitfalls recede into the background, allowing for the strengths (or weaknesses) of the direction to take center stage. In the case of Saturday Church, there is some fairly sturdy direction at work to admire, but, weighed down by some painfully clunky writing; the film has a hard time identifying what it’s good at and sticking to it. Where the trouble lies in such...

A dour, grey-and-blue-hued high school. A cold house. The vibrantly red backroom of a church. The pulsating, glittery universe of a drag ball. These are the worlds a black, gay teenager claims in Damon Cardasis’ spirited “Saturday Church.” The film attempts to cohere myriad emotional complexities in just 80 minutes, and it half-succeeds. Like many first films, “Saturday Church” occasionally gives way to melodrama or loses track of its onerous plot.

Director and writer Damon Cardasis created an Lgbtq-centric coming-of-age musical set in a world of magical realism. As his first feature film, Cardasis, a gay white male, maintained a laser-focus on creating the most authentic story about queer people of color and not falling into the trap of telling a story that wasn’t his to tell — a trap that Hollywood often falls into. Saturday Church (which opens today, Jan. 12 in limited theatres and on VOD) tells the story of…...

"You want to join them?" Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted the first official trailer for an indie musical titled Saturday Church, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. The film is being described as Moonlight meets La La Land (of course these two films are named), but set in New York City. The story follows a 14-year-old boy named Ulysses, struggling with gender identity and religion, who begins to use fantasy to escape his life in the inner city and find his passion in the process. Broadway up-and-comer Luka Kain stars as vibrant youngster Ulysses, with a cast including Margot Bingham, Regina Taylor, Mj Rodriguez, Marquis Rodriguez, and Indya Moore. Saturday Church also features songs and music composed and co-written by musician-turned-film composer Nathan Larson. This looks like a triumphant, uplifting, inspiring film from NYC. And this reminds me of the excellent documentary Kiki. Worth a watch.

Ryan Murphy’s newest show will delve into New York City’s drag ball culture, with a stellar cast of five up and coming transgender actresses in series regular roles. “Pose” makes history for featuring the largest cast of transgender actors as series regulars on any scripted series. FX Networks, which produced other Murphy hits “Feud: Bette and Joan,” “American Crime Story,” and “American Horror Story.”
Set in the 1980s, “Pose” looks at the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in New York: the rise of the luxury Trump-era universe, the downtown social and literary scene and the ball culture world. Murphy co-created the show with Brad Falchuk and Steven Canals.

A January 2018 release is planned for theaters, on demand and digital. The pic centers on 14-year-old Ulysses (Luca Kain), a shy and effeminate boy who finds himself "man of the house" after the death of his father. The 2017 Tribeca Film Festival has come and gone, but several of its highlights face an uncertain future. While the festival opened with an iTunes-ready documentary about Clive Davis and closed with back-to-back screenings of the first two “Godfather” films, many of the films in its competition sections arrived at the festival without distribution deals and ended it in the same state. Here’s at a few significant titles from this year’s edition that deserve to get picked up.

Overachieving multi-hyphenate Quinn Shephard was just 20 when she wrote, directed, produced, edited and starred in her feature directorial debut, a modern spin on Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible,” set in the witch hunt capital of contemporary America: the suburban high school. While Shephard cast herself as the film’s Abigail Williams — an outcast with secrets to spare who gets entangled with a smoldering substitute teacher, played by Chris Messina — the...

In its most profound moments, “Saturday Church” follows its searching young protagonist, Ulysses (Luka Kain) at the slightest remove, mirroring the distance he puts between himself and the world. It’s a place that’s been unkind to this soft-hearted teen who sneaks away from his father’s wake to try on a pair of strappy red heels, cracking the faintest smile as he holds them up to his grey Sunday best. Stepping into the shoes ever so gingerly, Ulysses wobbles briefly before admiring his reflection in the mirror. It’s a quiet moment, almost sacred, and one anyone who has ever furtively raided a parent’s closet will recognize.

The transfixing mix of poetic intimacy, emotional depth and searing compassion in last year's Moonlight made it a towering landmark among screen depictions of the struggles of young gay men. But as a subgenre, the Lgbtq coming-out/coming-of-age drama tends more often to fall into familiar grooves. That makes Damon Cardasis' heartfelt mini-musical, Saturday Church, all the more endearing as it escapes into interior-monologue numbers and expressive dance breaks to mark out the exploration of sexuality and gender identity of a Bronx teenager, played with lovely subdued intensity by newcomer Luka Kain.
