David Fincher is reportedly making a Squid Game spin-off series for Netflix. But wouldn’t we rather see something original from the filmmaker?
From a comparatively small investment, Squid Game has become a huge money-spinner for Netflix. The streaming giant bankrolled South Korean writer Hwang Dong-hyuk’s dystopian TV game show concept when other studios wouldn’t, with the series eventually appearing on the platform in 2021. The budget for the series was a reported $21.4m; the show was such a hit with subscribers that it was said to have made something in the region of $900m for Netflix.
With numbers like that swirling around, it’s little surprise that Netflix wants more Squid Game. Series two is due to stream in December, while a third and final season will follow in 2025; to keep the show’s name at the front of subscribers’ minds, reality TV spin-off Squid Game: The Challenge streamed in 2023.

The first episode of Marvel’s Agatha All Along starts from an unexpected place. Picking up her broom and flying into another freewheelin’ genre parody that made WandaVision an early delight, Agatha navigates an episode of Mindhunter as creator-director Jac Schaeffer wades into a genre Marvel has successfully dipped its toe in before: horror.

Netflix has a very odd pattern when it comes to the shows that it creates. It is often the case that what Netflix puts out ends up becoming popular, only for the streaming giant to make the devastating decision to cancel it. However, this courtesy is not extended to shows and films that end up not doing so well, and once again, it seems that a Netflix decision is going to backfire on the streaming service.

David Fincher is the director behind influential movies like Se7en, Fight Club and Zodiac, not to mention having a hand in foundational series like House of Cards. The director has worked closely with Netflix in recent years, releasing solid movies like The Killer and great shows like Mindhunter. And now, Deadline has it that his next project may be an English-language remake of Squid Game.
The first season of Squid Game dropped back in 2021. It wasn't just a hit; it became Netflix's most-streamed show ever, which surprised a lot of people. Who expected a Korean-language drama about debt-ridden people battling for their lives for the amusement of sadistic billionaires would be this big of a hit? Makes you think.
Anyway, Netflix capitalized on the success of Squid Game with an unscripted reality show called Squid Game: The Challenge, not to mention a second season of the original show coming out this December.

Directed by Stuart Stone, “Don’t F**k with Ghosts” follows Stuart Stone and Adam Rodness, a filmmaking duo commissioned to work on a movie about ghosts. In the film, the duo plays fictional versions of themselves, who initially try to get their pitch about the Bigfoot creature commissioned. Not long ago, the Zellner brothers brought up “Sasquatch Sunset,” about the same subject. While this Sundance release uses a fictional narrative about Bigfoot, Stone & Rodness (their versions) wants to make an explorative documentary about these believed-to-be-real creatures. Their financiers don’t see potential in this pitch. So, instead, they want the duo to make a movie about ghosts.
With Halloween being a major festival, not just for religious but capitalistic reasons, it’s not a surprising expectation for investors to put their money on the safest, potentially lucrative bet. I mean, who will watch another movie about the Sasquatch, right? People may...

As we await the second season of Netflix’s dystopian, Korean smash hit “Squid Game,” a report suggests the streamer may finally be looking to expand the story’s universe with a spinoff series from one of its biggest creators: David Fincher.
Fincher is reportedly eyeing an English-language “Squid Game” spinoff as his next project under his deal with the streamer, according to a report in Deadline. If something were to go into development, it would be the first scripted expansion of the show since it debuted in 2021.
No other details are out there, such as whether it’s a spinoff connected to the main show or a remake in English, but it could be Fincher’s next focus in 2025.
Netflix declined to comment.

David Fincher's getting back in the game with Netflix! Or, to be more specific, the Squid Game. That's right, folks — having worked on Mindhunter, Mank, The Killer, and Love, Death & Robots at the streamer already, word on the street is that the American auteur has his sights set on giving the platform's wildly popular satirical K-Drama the English-language remake treatment.
According to Deadline's 'The Dish' column, the long-rumoured US redux of Hwang Dong-hyuk's show is actively in the works at the streamer, and Fincher is gearing up to be the one to develop it. If the series does come to fruition, it'd be the first scripted project to spin off from the original Korean-language play-or-die thriller, which is itself set to continue with a second season dropping on Boxing Day this year before a third and final instalment lands sometime in 2025. Netflix’s most important filmmaker is linking up with its most important show. David Fincher is eying an English-language series adaptation of “Squid Game” for the streamer as his next project, Deadline reports. Netflix declined to comment.
The project, which has been rumored to be in development for months, will be the first scripted spinoff of the Korean survival thriller series, which is by far the most-watched series in Netflix’s history to date. It has also been adapted into a reality competition series, “Squid Game: The Challenge,” and a video game franchise. Details of Fincher’s take on “Squid Game” are vague, but it will reportedly be set in the U.S. and Fincher will start actively working on it in 2025.

Ahead of the Dec. 26 premiere of Squid Game season 2, there are already rumblings about what the future could hold for the Netflix franchise.
Now, we have known that Netflix renewed the series for a third and final season for quite some time, but there's currently rumors that an Academy Award-nominated director could be developing a new English-language series that would grow the universe.
According to Deadline, Netflix has begun to develop an English-language Squid Game series, likely paving the way to continue the franchise beyond season 3 and the second season of the reality competition series, and they're bringing in David Fincher to do so.
David Fincher might be working on new Squid Game series
The pairing would make sense considering Fincher re-upped his deal with Netflix earlier this year. Because the supposed series remains in early development, additional details are scarce beyond that fact that it's scripted, English-language, and likely set in the United States.

Deadline details, “Although details are vague, rumors have been growing for several months about what Fincher could be up to next. While he could squeeze in a movie beforehand, insiders say the Squid Game series is likely the project Fincher commits his time to in 2025.”
“The Fincher series would mark the first English-language scripted Squid Game series, joining Hwang Dong-hyuk’s original Korean-language thriller,” Deadline also notes in their report.
In the South Korean series, “Hundreds of cash-strapped players accept a strange invitation to compete in children’s games. Inside, a tempting prize awaits with deadly high stakes. A survival game that has a whopping 45.6 billion-won prize at stake.”

Lauded journalist, host, and moderator Josh Horowitz is a staple among the Hollywood circuit in part thanks to his popular podcast “Happy Sad Confused.” Horowitz, who began his career as a producer and talent booker, parlayed his expertise and ease with filmmakers into his own standalone podcast back in 2014. Its format pivoted during the pandemic to include a video component on YouTube (where he has amassed more than 111K subscribers), and once again took another shape as Horowitz began hosting live podcast recordings with a partnership at the 92nd St Y in New York City.
Horowitz has interviewed notoriously private, or rather, anti-podcast stars such as Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, and Vin Diesel, with Christian Bale, Cillian Murphy, Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet, and Henry Cavill appearing on multiple episodes. There was a rumor that caught my attention earlier this week — not because it was interesting, but rather because of how interesting it should have been.

The reasons why this little nugget should’ve perked my ears up are pretty obvious, and they begin with the fact that Fincher remains one of America’s most compelling filmmakers, even and especially...

During the era of network television, shows used to have a shelf-life of at least 10 seasons. Some TV series that were made before the Ott boom continue to enjoy the freedom to adapt and improve over the course of many years, but the same can’t be said about made-for-ott shows, especially the ones on Netflix. Yes, “guilty pleasure content” like Emily in Paris and Elite has benefited from the hate-watch syndrome. However, a lot of really good shows have been unceremoniously axed by the streaming platform before they could find their audience. The one cancellation that hurt viewers the most was Mindhunter. Now, ever since its termination, fans have been clamoring for David Fincher, Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, Anna Torv, and the rest of the team to come together for at least one more season. Like the monkey’s paw curling effect, they did return to Netflix, but just via different projects.

From being depicted in “Mindhunter” to inspiring Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn for “Joker: Folie á Deux” and being immortalized in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Charles Manson has been a Hollywood fixation for decades.
Now, the late convicted murderer and alleged cult leader is posthumously narrating his own infamous legacy with Peacock docuseries “Making Manson.”
The series consists of three one-hour episodes that include more than 100 hours of intimate conversations recorded over 20 years up until Manson’s death in 2017. Manson and three members of his California-based following were convicted for the murders of seven people, including actress Sharon Tate, on January 26, 1971. Manson died in prison.
Peacock bills this upcoming docuseries as being the “most comprehensive Manson portrait yet on film or television” ever. Nearly 20 contributors appear onscreen, including Manson Family alums, to actual family members of their victims. Some interviewees are speaking out on-camera first time.

Another one bites the dust at Netflix!
The streaming giant announced today that the Rob Lowe sitcom Unstable has been canceled after two seasons.
It’s been a tough year for Lowe, whose 9-1-1: Lone Star recently received the ax from Fox.
But when all is said and done, Rob Lowe still leads a pretty enviable life. So the real losers in this situation are, as always, the folks who continue to shell out for increasingly pricey Netflix subscriptions.
The situation has us feeling a bit like Charlie Brown. In this analogy, Netflix is Lucy, and exciting new content is the football that’s cruelly pulled away each time we make our eager approach.
At this point, it feels like every longtime Netflix subscriber has a horror story about getting hooked on a show just to see it unceremoniously axed after one or two seasons.

Jonathan Groff singing Bollywood tunes is the centerpiece of “A Nice Indian Boy,” a groundbreaking gay rom-com that’s heating up the BFI London Film Festival.
Director Roshan Sethi and stars Groff and Karan Soni (the “Deadpool” franchise) are challenging Hollywood norms with their cross-cultural love story, which debuted at SXSW. It aims to bring a fresh perspective to both LGBTQ+ and South Asian representation on screen.
The genesis of the project traces back to 2019, when Levantine Films optioned Madhuri Shekar’s play of the same name and Eric Randall adapted it as a screenplay. Sethi came aboard in 2021 after the producers saw his previous film “7 Days.” He then approached his real-life partner Soni to co-star. Groff signed on after watching “7 Days.”
Set in the U.S., the film follows socially-reserved doctor Naveen (Soni) who brings his fiancé Jay (Groff) home to meet his traditional Indian family, who...

Humanity’s obsession with crimes (especially true crimes) has existed since, well, crimes were taking place. One of the most popular shows centered around true crimes, Crime Patrol, has been airing on TV for the past 2 decades with a whopping 2000+ episodes under its belt. Then there’s Netflix, which has sort of carved a niche for itself by unpacking the reasoning behind a crime with shows and movies like Mindhunter, Extremely Wicked Shocking Evil and Vile, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths, The Indrani Mukerjea Story, and Sector 36. Somewhere along the way, the aforementioned obsession evolved into a fascination for killers, with people dressing up as these real-life monsters on Halloween. In Her Place takes this intrigue regarding killers to the next level, but does it have anything new to say about this subgenre? Let’s find out.

HBO brings some great dramas that focus on historical events. Chernobyl is a five-part miniseries that told us of the events during and after the real nuclear disaster.
Of course, when the Chernobyl disaster happened, the Soviet Union would try to hide it all. It ended up being one of the biggest disasters at the time, showing the realities of radiation not just to those in the immediate vicinity, but those around the disaster.
The series then focused on the clean-up efforts, while people looked to figure out what really happened that night. Not only was this important to help people in need, but it was essential to prevent it from happening again. Chernobyl offers us a mixture of drama and history. There are many shows just like it, and here are five to watch next.

Last year, we heard that Spyder Dobrofsky – who worked on the scripts for such flicks as The Housewives of the North Pole and One Christmas Wish, as well as Mom’s Day Away, and made his feature directorial debut with the mystery thriller Spiral – was making a holiday horror movie called Down Below and had assembled a solid cast for the project: the legendary Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight) stars alongside Bai Ling (The Crow), Alexis Knapp (Pitch Perfect), and Doug Jones, who is best known for his creature (or heavily made up) performances in films like The Shape of Water, Hellboy, and Hocus Pocus. Now, Down Below has been sent out into the world, as it was given a digital release this week and is available to rent or purchase on Amazon’s Prime Video at This Link.

Daniel Craig is best known for his role as Agent 007 in the James Bond films. Starting with 2006’s Casino Royale, the actor played the role for fifteen years, ending his tenure with 2021’s No Time To Die. The actor was reportedly happy to exit the role and has since starred in Knives Out and will be seen in the upcoming Queer.
However, one film reportedly trumped his horror at playing Bond repeatedly. The actor spoke about the early scenes that director David Fincher showed from their collaboration The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Craig mentioned that he was horrified at the visuals and could not believe the free rein he got from the studio.

Since it took the streaming scene by storm, Netflix has had some great shows available on its service. However, as soon as the streaming giant became known for its quality prestige dramas, it also became quite notorious for canceling some of its best shows without any rhyme or reason, despite some of them being fan favorites.

Mindhunter is one of those shows that needed more love from Netflix, but instead ended up being shelved for good. Of course, this had quite the reaction from fans, who were a little miffed about shows like Jupiter’s Legacy and Mindhunter being canceled, while other more subpar shows get renewed again and again.
There is no way that Mindhunter is going to come back, reveals David Fincher Bill and Holden in Mindhunter || Netflix
Despite having two brilliant seasons that fans adored, Mindhunter will not be getting a third season.

It’s not often I’d be talking about Agatha Christie, Renny Harlin, Val Kimer and LL Cool J in the same breath, but thanks to the world of Tinseltown magic, here we are! And, before you’re mis-led into thinking this video is about the great Netflix show of the same name, let me just set the record straight. This ain’t that one folks. Nope, the movie we’re focusing on today somehow manages to blend the classic British literary world of Agatha Christie with LL Cool J spitting out lines like. That’s right gore-hounds, twenty years ago director Renny Harlin was best known for action classics, pirate movies, dangling Sylvester Stallone from great heights and giant sharks; way before the likes of The Meg and more recently, Under Paris. Then, an intriguing project came his way that would blend the worlds of Agatha Christie and gangster rappers,...

“2073” can’t come soon enough.
The upcoming feature, distributed by Neon and inspired by Chris Marker’s influential “La Jetée” (which was also the basis for Terry Gilliam’s “12 Monkeys”), imagines a bleak future world, using footage and interviews from our present to drive the point home.
You can watch the first trailer for Asif Kapadia’s hybrid feature, combining non-fiction and fiction elements, below:
“2073,” which premieres out of competition (in the non-fiction category) this week at the Venice Film Festival, stars Samantha Morton and Naomi Ackie in a narrative that features time travel, alongside talking head interviews with Maria Ressa, Carole Cadwalladr, Rana Ayyub and Ben Rhodes.
It’s a fascinating (and extremely depressing) conceit that will see director Kapadia, who has helmed documentaries like “Senna” and “Amy” but also narrative projects like episodes of David Fincher’s “Mindhunter,” combine two disciplines in exciting and unique ways.

I remember the moment I realized how much I love television. It was March 2, 2014, and for the first time in years, I skipped the Oscar telecast completely. I did it to watch a new episode of "True Detective," which was nearing the end of its phenomenal, influential, heavily-discussed first season. The show's grip on American pop culture that year was incredible: It won five Emmys, inspired countless parodies, and lit up the internet with theories and Easter egg hunts. People read Robert W. Chambers' "The King in Yellow" after the word "Carcosa" popped up in the show. Viewers made gifs and edits of every single shot of Matthew McConaughey's hilariously bleak protagonist. And, importantly, people in Hollywood clearly started searching for the next "True Detective."
In the years that followed the show's first season, a whole host of TV series appeared that clearly followed the "True Detective" rulebook: Slow-burn criminal investigations,...

David Fincher has firmly established himself as a master of blending art and commerce. It’s especially impressive considering his output has been uniformly dark, moody and disturbing, with flashes of wit and satire thrown in. Let’s take a look back at all 12 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1962, Fincher cut his teeth at special effects house Industrial Light and Magic, working on such films as “Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi” (1983) and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (1984). He left to pursue a career in directing, making his mark with a commercial for the American Cancer Society that depicted a fetus smoking a cigarette. He co-founded Propaganda Films, a production house for music videos and commercials that employed future filmmakers Spike Jonze, Michael Bay, Antoine Fuqua, Alex Proyas, Mark Romanek, Zach Snyder and Gore Verbinski. Exclusive: Holt McCallany has been tapped to star in the new Netflix family drama series The Waterfront, written and executive produced by Kevin Williamson.
