With the announcement for the 76th Primetime Emmys set for July 17th, let’s travel back 70 years and revisit the winners of the 6th Emmy Awards held Feb. 11, 1954 at the venerable Hollywood Palladium and telecast on Khj. New categories introduced that year included best new program and supporting actor and actress in a TV series. Prior to 1954, performers were nominated as individuals, but this year the program for which they were nominated was also included. NBC was nominated for 36 Emmys, while CBS placed second with 30 and ABC trailing far behind with just three.

CBS’s cherished “I Love Lucy’ won its second Emmy for best comedy series, while Vivian Vance took home her only Emmy for the show for her supporting role as Ethel Mertz. The other nominees for comedy series were CBS’ “The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show,” NBC’s “Mr. Peepers,” CBS’ “Our Miss Brooks,” and CBS “Topper.

In terms of new original content coming to Hulu, March is a slight month, with the streamer’s highlight being the limited series premiere of We Were the Lucky Ones at the end of the month. The show, which is based on Georgia Hunter’s New York Times bestselling novel, is inspired by the true story of a Jewish family who are separated at the start of WWII, and who then have to survive in order to eventually reunite. We Were the Lucky Ones stars Joey King from The Kissing Booth films alongside Percy Jackson‘s Logan Lerman, and debuts on March 28.

Unfortunately, Robert Pattinson’s Good Time co-star Buddy Duress passed away last year at the age of 38. After gaining worldwide recognition with his role as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga, Pattinson switched to independent films which also gained him critical acclaim. One of these films was the Safdie Brothers’ Good Time.

Buddy Duress was a frequent collaborator of the Safdie Brothers and was best known for his roles in movies like 2017’s Good Time, Heaven Knows What, and Person to Person. He had gotten into quite some legal troubles before his unfortunate demise.

Buddy Duress, born Michael C. Stathis, did not make his film debut until 2014 when he starred in Heaven Knows What. He was on the run from law when he was discovered by Josh Safdie.

Buddy Duress, the actor who appeared in two Safdie Brothers films including 2017’s Good Time starring Robert Pattinson, died last November of what his brother said this week was “cardiac arrest from a drug cocktail.” Duress was 38.

Duress’ death was announced on social media last week by director Jay Karales, whose upcoming film Mass State Lottery features Duress. The cause of death was announced yesterday to People by the actor’s brother Christopher Stathis (Duress was born Michael C. Stathis).

“This man was an absolute treasure,” Karales, known professionally as LowRes Wünderbred, wrote. “Without a doubt, Buddy Duress was one of the most entertaining people I’ve ever met and his stories were unrivaled. I remember seeing him in Good Time in 2017 and saying, ‘That is what the future of acting needs to be. That guy.’ He brought a certain authenticity and charisma to the screen that you just don’t see anymore.

Elaine Devry, an actress who appeared in such films as The Atomic Kid and A Guide for the Married Man and on dozens of TV shows after becoming the fourth of Mickey Rooney’s eight wives, has died. She was 93.

Devry died Sept. 20 in her home in Grants Pass, Oregon, according to a notice placed on a local funeral home website.

Devry married Rooney in Las Vegas in November 1952 and made her first onscreen acting appearances the next year in the Rooney-starring comedy film A Slight Case of Larceny and on an episode of the Ronald Reagan-hosted CBS anthology series General Electric Theater.

In the Republic Pictures sci-fi comedy The Atomic Kid (1954), directed by Leslie H. Martinson, she was introduced as “Elaine Davis (Mrs. Mickey Rooney),” and her character, a nurse, marries her husband’s Barnaby “Blix” Waterberry at the end of the movie.

Writer-director Dustin Guy Defa has shared a first-look clip (below) of his feature comedy drama “The Adults,” which will have its world premiere Saturday at the Berlin Film Festival, with stars Michael Cera, Hannah Gross and Sophia Lillis, and Defa in attendance.

The movie year has already unleashed a lot of memorable work, from Sundance breakouts to “M3GAN.” But things are about to get a lot more global. Even as a new Marvel movie opens in theaters worldwide, the Berlin International Film Festival begins on Wednesday to offer a whole lot more. Nestled in between Sundance and SXSW, Berlin is like a firehose of international cinema.

More than 200 films from around the world will premiere at the festival this week, many of which are potential discoveries. Okieriete Onaodowan will play the title role in the upcoming AMC sci-fi comedy series “Demascus.”

The six-episode, half-hour series follows Demascus, a 33-year-old Black man who goes on a journey of self-discovery by delving into the world of digital psychiatry and using an innovative new technology that allows him to experience different versions of his own life.

Onaodowan is best known for starring as Dean Miller in the ABC drama and “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff “Station 19,” as well as playing James Madison and Hercules Mulligan in the original Broadway cast of “Hamilton.” He also played Afrika Bambaataa in Netflix’s “The Get Down” and Anthony in HBO’s “Ballers,” along with voicing Timbourine Toucan in “Tuca and Bertie” and multiple roles in “Robot Chicken,” which both air on Adult Swim. On the film side, Onaodowan’s credits include “A Quiet Place Part II,” “Person to Person” and “Thanks for Sharing.

There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.

Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

Norah O’Donnell and CBS News have come to terms on a new deal that will keep the anchor at “CBS Evening News” beyond the 2024 election, according to four people familiar with the matter.

A a spokeswoman for O’Donnell declined to make the anchor available for comment. O’Donnell disclosed her new contract Friday evening while having a toast with some producers at CBS News’ Washington, D.C., facility, according to three of these people. CBS News confirmed it had signed the anchor to a new deal on Saturday, after details, some previously reported by Puck, began to surface.

In the first instalment of my in-depth conversation with Rick Alverson on The Mountain, co-written with Person To Person director Dustin Guy Defa and Colm O'Leary (The Comedy), shot by Lorenzo Hagerman (Entertainment), starring Jeff Goldblum and Tye Sheridan (Alexandre Moors's The Yellow Birds), with Hannah Gross (Michael Almereyda's Marjorie Prime), Udo Kier, and Denis Lavant (a Leos Carax and Emmanuel Bourdieu favourite), we discuss what "interrupting the trigger" means to him, "parallels between lobotomy and filmmaking", a Django Reinhardt number, and the role the threshold move plays. Rick confided to me that he is a "big Perry Como fan" and that he was "reared on all that Disney stuff" when I brought up a scene that reminded me of Snow White.

Gloria Vanderbilt, artist, author, actress, fashion designer, heiress and the mother of CNN’s Anderson Cooper, has died. She died Monday morning at her New York City home, surrounded by family and friends, CNN announced. She was 95.

“Gloria Vanderbilt was an extraordinary woman, who loved life, and lived it on her own terms,” Cooper said in a statement. “She was a painter, a writer, and designer but also a remarkable mother, wife, and friend. She was 95 years old, but ask anyone close to her, and they’d tell you, she was the youngest person they knew, the coolest, and most modern.”

Following up his divisive films The Comedy and Entertainment, Rick Alverson once again got humorously bleak with his next feature The Mountain, which had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. Set in 1953, the movie conveys the relationship between an introverted teenager Andy (Tye Sheridan), whose mother has been institutionalized, and the seemingly charming Dr. Wallace Fiennes (Jeff Goldblum), a famous lobotomist whose career is in sharp decline. As the Doctor evangelizes his harmful procedures to save his dwindling career, Andy becomes infatuated with a patient (Hannah Gross) and his worldview shifts accordingly with his burgeoning sexual feelings. There comes a telling moment near the beginning of The Mountain when Jeff Goldblum’s doctor turns to his newfound apprentice to explain the workings of a camera’s aperture. He’s a shady lobotomist (is there any other kind?) and has just hired the younger man to take photos of the women he operates on, both before and after their procedures. He explains to him that were he to set the aperture to F11 not much light would get in. You would be within your rights to say that the film itself is set to F11, just as its creator, Rick Alverson, might be too. As visually overcast as it is emotionally dead-eyed, The Mountain is probably the most intentionally–and unwarrantedly–bleak film you’re likely to see in 2018, a draining head-fuck of a movie with perhaps some stuff to say about misogyny, creativity, and mid-20th Century mental asylums.

Acclaimed FX spy drama “The Americans” will be given a fitting farewell at the Emmys this year, without the need for any collusion or Russian meddling in the voting process.

Although “The Americans” was a slow-burn at the Emmys to begin with, managing a total of five nominations over its first three seasons (including a guest acting win for Margo Martindale in 2015), it finally broke through in a big way 2016 with five bids, including for Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor (Matthew Rhys), Best Drama Actress (Keri Russell) and a second consecutive win for Martindale. Last year, although it missed the cut in Best Drama Series, it racked up four big nominations, including for both leads, writing and Alison Wright taking Martindale’s place in Best Drama Guest Actress.

The irreverent contemporary Western The Escape of Prisoner 614 arrives on Blu-ray (plus Digital), DVD, and Digital June 26 from Lionsgate. The film is currently available On Demand. Ron Perlman stars as a corrupt and cold-blooded sherif opposite recently fired deputies played by Martin Starr and Jake McDorman, who purse an escaped convict to try to win back their badges. Abbi Jacobson has lately spent off-weeks from Comedy Central’s “Broad City” giving dramatic, festival-friendly performances. Last year she co-starred in the Sundance premiere “Person to Person” alongside Michael Cera and Tavi Gevinson. This week she was at SXSW for the debut screening of “6 Balloons,” a forthcoming Netflix feature from writer-director Marja-Lewis Ryan.

While organizing a surprise party for her boyfriend, Katie (Jacobson) discovers that her brother Seth (Dave Franco) has relapsed on heroin. After she’s unable to place him at a local rehab facility, Katie spends an agonizing night watching and distracting his young daughter, as Seth tags along with worsening withdrawal. Seven-time Emmy nominee Jane Kaczmarek plays their mother. The actors were cast in October 2016.

Few things are more sublime than finding back-to-back features that hit some specific thematic sweet spot. Drive-in theaters may not be the popular viewing spot they once were, but with the overwhelming accessibility we now have, one can program their own personal double bill. Today, we’ve run through the gamut of 2017 films to select the finest pairings and tried to sway from the most obvious (i.e. a combination of Dunkirk, Darkest Hour and The Finest Hour). As 2017 winds down, like most cinephiles, we’re looking to get our hands on the titles that may have slipped under the radar or simply gone unseen. With the proliferation of streaming options, it’s thankfully easier than ever to play catch-up, and to assist with the process, we’re bringing you a rundown of the best titles of the year available to watch.

Curated from the Best Films of 2017 So Far list we published for the first half of the year, it also includes films we’ve enjoyed the past few months and some we’ve recently caught up on. This is far from a be-all, end-all year-end feature (that will come at the end of the year), but rather something that will hopefully be a helpful tool for readers to have a chance to seek out notable, perhaps underseen, titles from the year.

In continuing our fall preview, and after highlighting the 25 best films we’ve already seen, today brings a look at the unknown. We’ve narrowed down 30 works with (mostly) confirmed release dates that are coming over the next four months and have us intrigued. While some won’t show up until late December, a good amount will first premiere over the next few weeks at various film festivals, so check back for our reviews.

Dustin Guy Defa knows something about the zeitgeist: mainly, that to capture the spirit of our times one has to evoke the spirit of other times. Defa’s feature-length Person to Person, expanded from an earlier short, chooses New York in the 1970s as its nostalgic fulcrum. Shot on 16mm, Person to Person is a filtered film, in the Snapchat/Instagram meaning of that word, a gloss of reminiscence over a modern snapshot. Snapshots are all we get with Person to Person; it’s an ensemble piece that resists the urge to weave together all its threads or resolve much of anything. At the end of the film, we aren’t left hanging so much as temporarily resting. It’s a strong group of limited releases for a July weekend: Kathryn Bigelow’s “Detroit,” “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power,” and the Yiddish-language “Menashe” all performed well, as did Sony Pictures Classics’ “Bigsby Bear.”

Kathryn Bigelow’s first film since “Zero Dark Thirty” is the first released by Megan Ellison’s production company through its own distributor. With reviews nearly as strong as “Zero” and “The Hurt Locker” but shifting to the home front in this recounting of the Detroit riots exactly 50 years ago, this opened in 10 markets ahead of its wide release this Friday. This is a tough subject, however well received, and Annapurna and its team has a challenge opening this outside of the festival/awards season and finding a wide swath of African-American and other upscale audiences.

Dustin Guy Defa is on the cusp of big changes. The filmmaker’s second feature film, Person To Person, opens tomorrow. In it, Defa delicately interweaves multiple stories taking place over one day in the lives of New Yorkers portrayed by an ensemble of legendary performers (Phillip Baker Hall, Isiah Whitlock Jr.), name actors (Michael Cera), newcomers (Abbi Jacobson, Tavi Gerivson, George Sample III), and so-called “non-actors” (Bene Coopersmith). Kogonada is one of the most well known video essayists on the internet, but he’s about to become one of the best new voices in indie film. “Columbus,” which premiered to acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, is a hypnotic and intimate debut that’s bound to leave an impression on anyone who sees it.

Kogonada’s debut stars John Cho as Jin, a man who finds himself stranded in the titular Indiana town after his father falls gravely ill. It’s here where he strikes up a friendship with an architectural enthusiast (Haley Lu Richardson) struggling with her own parental issues. The pair spark a connection rooted in soul-searching.

Entertainment Weekly has debuted the official trailer for the movie, and to say it looks visually striking would be the understatement of the year. Working with cinematographer Elisha Christian, Kogonada draws your attention to architecture and blocking like a master filmmaker.

This is the time of year when those films that made the festival circuit earlier are now being released for the general public to view. One such film is “Person to Person,” which made its debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was immediately picked up by Magnolia Pictures for distribution. Now, the film is set to be released later this summer, and we have our first trailer ready for public eyes.

Hollywood loves hyperbole, but when it comes to talking about Noel Marshall’s wild “Roar,” it’s hard to overstate just how crazy, dangerous, and just plain nuts the film’s production was.

For 11 years, producer-director Marshall; his wife, the actress Tippi Hedren; and their children, including then-fledging actress Melanie Griffith, lived, ate and slept in the company of 150 lions, tigers, cheetahs, and jaguars. (Yes, this sounds like a bad enough idea already, but wait for it.) Eventually, Marshall and Hedren came up with the idea to use their own life — and cats! — as the basis for a film meant to bolster their love for animal conversation. It did not work out very well.

The film’s shoot was plagued from the start, both by financial difficulties (Marshall and Hedren sold almost everything they had to finance it), and a series of horrific, seemingly random plagues, including floods, wildfire, and disease. And that’s to say nothing of the injuries.

When Drafthouse Films re-released the film back in 2015, the forward-thinking distributor sold the feature with a canny (and true) tagline: “No animals were harmed in the making of this movie. 70 members of the cast and crew were.”

As IndieWire detailed at the time: “Some of the injuries sustained in the course of production: cinematographer Jan de Bont was scalped, requiring 220 stitches; Griffith was mauled by a lion, which required facial reconstructive surgery; an A.D. narrowly escaped death when a lion missed his jugular by an inch; Hedren, who was also attacked by birds on the set of ‘The Birds,’ endured a fractured leg and multiple scalp wounds; and Marshall himself was wounded so many times that he was hospitalized with gangrene.”

Those injuries and upheavals are just part of the upcoming behind-the-scenes documentary, “Roar: The Most Dangerous Movie Ever Made,” which dives deep into the film’s troubled production, complete with exclusive interviews and never-before-seen footage. “Roar,” it seems is still dangerous, and now there’s even more of it.

In our exclusive clip, various cast and crew members (including Marshall’s son John, who starred in the film) detail the circumstances surrounding perhaps the most notorious injury to happen during production: the scalping of de Pont at the hands (paws) of some very angry big cats. Fans of Asian cinema are in for a very big treat when The Film Society of Lincoln Center and Subway Cinema roll out their annual New York Asian Film Festival, known as North America’s leading festival of popular Asian cinema, later this month.

This year’s edition will showcase 57 feature films, including 3 International Premieres, 21 North American Premieres, 4 U.S. Premieres, and 15 films making their New York City debuts, including titles like “Bad Genius,” “Birdshot,” “A Double Life,” “The Gangster’s Daughter,” “Kfc,” “Jane,” and “With Prisoners.”

The festival will present five awards, including the Star Hong Kong Lifetime Achievement Award to Eric Tsang, two Star Asia Awards, the Screen International Rising Star Award to Thailand’s Chutimon “Aokbab” Chuengcharoensukying as announced on June 5, and the Daniel E. Craft Award for Excellence in Action Cinema to South Korea’s Jung Byung-gil.

“We were seeking a range of original films from young, first-time directors, films that represent the diversity of filmmaking from Asia, stories that say something both very local and specific to their countries of origin and something very universal: we hope we achieved at least some of this with our inaugural competition selection, which includes films from seven countries/cities in the region in a broad variety of genres,” Nyaff executive director Samuel Jamier said in an official statement.

He added, “It’s important for us to champion new filmmaking from Asia, and the diversity of film made there at a time when other festivals in North America seem to be reducing the size of their Asian lineups.”

The New York Asian Film Festival is curated by executive director Samuel Jamier, deputy director Stephen Cremin, and programmers Claire Marty and David Wilentz. It is co-presented by Subway Cinema Inc and the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

The festival is held at the Film Society of Lincoln Center (June 30 – July 13) and the Sva Theater (July 14 – 16).

Only two years have passed since we last took a trip to Camp Firewood in the prequel series “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp,” but we’re about to take a big 10-year jump in the sequel series, which of course bares the title “Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later.”

Netflix has released the first official trailer for David Wain and Michael Showalter’s next run of eight episodes, and it takes everything you love about the original and puts an amazing (or disturbing, depending on how you look at it) 1990s spin on things. The new installment is set in 1991 and centers around the 10 year Camp Firewood reunion. Expect very odd things to go down.

“Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later” debuts on Netflix August 4. The ensemble cast includes Amy Poehler, Chris Meloni, Chris Pine, David Hyde Pierce, Elizabeth Banks, Janeane Garofalo, Jason Schwartzman, Kristen Wiig, Paul Rudd and many more.

Radiohead is celebrating a milestone this year as their groundbreaking 1997 album “Ok Computer” turns 20 years old. To celebrate the anniversary, the band is releasing “Oknotok,” a deluxe reissue that includes three unreleased tracks. The group has debuted the music video for the second of these tracks, entitled “Man of War,” and it’s as ambitious and head-spinning as you should expect from Radiohead at this point in their career.

The clip is directed by Colin Read and features a paranoid man walking down the street being followed. Read shot the same long take twice at different points in the day and then edited them together to give off the surreal impression of one shot that switches between night and day but never breaks its long take effect.

Similar to “Birdman” and the opening of “La La Land,” neither take is a pure one shot, but the editing to mask the cuts has been done so effectively that the sensation of watching a one take remains. And let’s just say it’s thrilling to behold.

“Man of War” is the second unreleased track off “Oknotok” after “I Promise,” which received a music video from “All These Sleepless Night” director Michal Marczak earlier this month. Watch the new music video below.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to “Person to Person,” a comedy starring Michael Cera and “Broad City’s” Abbi Jacobson that premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. Writer/director Dustin Guy Defa’s sophomore feature (following 2011’s “Bad Fever”) follows a day in the lives of an eclectic mix of New Yorkers. These include a record collector hustling for a massive score while his roommate tries to make up for a big mistake; a teenager examining her best friend’s new relationship; and a rookie reporter and her tough boss investigating a murder case involving a clock store owner.
