I'm not sure what budget this film had, but it certainly appears to be low; the production values are pretty low in terms of visual polish and sound quality. However this is something I like about shorts, that not having the resources for the best camera doesn't stop you having great ideas. We Can't Be Late sort of has a good idea, which comes together as the film moves forward, but the problem is that it doesn't have the quality in the total creation to pull it off.
In essence the film is about two buddies on their way somewhere, chatting together, giving each other a hard time about stuff and things like this. The ultimate destination of the film is a nice idea, but it needs us to really be into the lead characters and believe them as people and friends. Working against this though is the writing and acting. Both have elements where they feel okay, but too often the dialogue is a little stiff and unnatural, and the delivery thereof matches this. It is not awful by any means, but it doesn't feel like the viewer is being drawn into any of it – which is the film's single biggest problem in its construction, production values are secondary as an issue.
It might have worked if this base was better, but it is not strong enough to deliver what the idea needs for the viewer to be with the film.
