A rare Shanghai dialect movie
3 April 2022
It's been a long time since I saw a movie with all the lines in Shanghainese. The film is full of Shanghai's unique style and human touch, but also cleverly embedded in the director's own wisdom and humor. I felt very comfortable listening to the Shanghai dialect in the movie, watching the streets of the plane trees and enjoying the whole story. All were so appropriate. I think this shows that films need to be diversified. China's films should not be full of northern-style narratives and language styles. Too much will make us tired.

At present, it seems that Beijing is too dominant in popular culture, and there are too many styles of north, including the northeast in China's movie and TV series.

The good news is that there is a chance to counter the northern power, in addition to Shanghai, the southern style film production is Guangdong. For example, I Am What I Am (aka Xiongshi Shaonian). The images and scenes presented in the story are full of Lingnan style (the area near Foshan, Guangdong Province, the hometown of Yip Man). Unique, fresh and full of tradition .
