The Kashmir region is defined by it beauty and the many cultures its conveys. However, its territory also highlights the troubled history of India after the partition when Kashmir became the most fought-over region, resulting in three wars between Pakistan and India, and the region finally being subdivided among the two states, as well as China. Its history as well as its rich culture is what attracted Indian director Pushpendra Singh for his third feature “The Shepherdess and the Seven Songs” whose story is set within the Indian-administered territories of Jammu and Kashmir. The movie, which had its world premiere at the 2020 Berlin International Film Festival, tells a story about the region, but also one about oppression and liberation, about desire and attraction.

Northwest India’s Jammu and Kashmir region resides at the center of a longstanding geopolitical stalemate involving neighboring Pakistan. While those tensions are referenced in The Shepherdess and the Seven Songs, they are not the film’s focal point. Instead, paranoia and opportunism have become fully ingrained in the forest area’s mountainous bedrock. Of more importance is why these characters either accept or subvert such societal realities, and how they normalize modes of corruption and gender inequality under the guise of tradition or progress.
When split in half, the title of Pushpendra Singh’s riveting character study represents competing forces of assimilation and freedom, patriarchy and artistic expression. Indian arthouse filmmaker Pushpendra Singh’s latest effort, feminist fable “The Shepherdess and the Seven Songs” (Laila Aur Satt Geet) is bowing at the Singapore International Film Festival after plaudits at Berlin, Hong Kong and Jeonju.
The film, based on renowned Rajasthani writer Vidaydan Detha’s story of a woman discarding all identities society wants to impose on her, and making her own choices, uses the narrative device of seven local folk songs to describe the protagonist Laila’s inner and outer worlds.
“I had read the folktale in 2010 and was fascinated that Vijaydan Detha wrote a feminist story in the late 1960s which also dealt with desire and exploitation and how a woman in a conservative feudal society asserts herself and makes her own choices,” Singh tells Variety. “The idea to adapt it to contemporary times was also a strong drive to choose the subject.”

In the vast and gorgeous region of Kashmir (which most outsiders might only associate with its contestation between India and Pakistan), nomadic tribes still live difficult but not unpleasant lives, herding their animals beneath the beauty and drama of the Himalayas. Though their existence is under constant threat of the increasing and generally useless bureaucracy and scrutiny of civil servants and police. Magic still exists in these forests and mountains; Pushpendra Singh’s luscious tale The Shephardess and the Seven Songs, inspired by poetry by 14th century mystic Lalleshwari and an old folktale, infuses this magic to the modern world as one particular woman struggles for independence of body, mind, and spirit. It seems that Laila (Navjot Randhawa) has no choice but to marry Tanvir (Sadakkit...

The Hong Kong International Film Festival has taken the unusual decision of revealing the pictures it selected for its now canceled 44th edition. It also plans to award prizes in its competition sections, though there will be neither in-person or online screenings for the public.
The festival had previously rescheduled its 44th edition from its usual slot in March, due to the first wave of the coronavirus outbreak. And then set Aug 18-31 Aug. dates instead. But, with the city now facing a third wave of the virus, organizers last Friday bowed to the inevitable and announced the cancellation of HKIFF44 and the smaller Cine Fan activities in September and October.
Now it says that this year’s Firebird Awards and Fipresci prize competitions will proceed with online judging. Winners will be announced on Aug. 20.

Chinese social drama film “Damp Season” was this week named as the Grand Prize winner at the Jeonju International Film Festival. The well-established Korean festival has been held in largely virtual form this year in reaction to the coronavirus outbreak.
At the end of April, festival organizers confirmed that Jiff would go ahead May 28 to June 6, roughly a month after its usual late-April slot. But they said that it would be stripped down to become “an exclusive edition with no public audience,” consisting of just three sections: an international competition; a Korean competition; and a competition for Korean-made short films. Some films will be available for public, online screening until September 20.
Directed by Gao Ming, who previously made 2006 feature-length documentary “Pai Gu,” “Damp Season” tracks the relationships of four young men and women in mega-city Shenzhen.

Nfdc Film Bazaar is introducing a new segment for films in need of gap financing this year. Eighteen projects will be pitched to potential investors to find finishing funds at the first Investor Pitch in Goa this year.
“We learnt that independent films invariably run out of budget at post-production stage. So we thought of organizing a pitching session of such films from Nfdc Recommends section and presenting them to investors, producers and distributors. Here prospective investors can get to watch full films,” says Deepti DCunha, the curator of Investor Pitch.
In order to try out the idea, Nfdc invited selected filmmakers from the Viewing Room section last year for a pitching forum. Filmmakers were asked to showcase the trailers and talk about their films for about five minutes.

Avinash Arun’s “Killa”
Avinash Arun’s debut film Killa, won the Crystal Bear at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival in the Generation KPlus section. Killa is about an 11 year old child who is coping with the death of his father and finds it difficult to adapt to a new place he has migrated to. Director Avinash Arun tells us more about the film.
You’ve been describing Killa as autobiographical. In what sense is it so?
I come from a small town called Solapur in Maharashtra. My father kept getting transferred from one place to another. It was very difficult for me to make friends in one place and suddenly, do it all over again. This went on and on. Later, I realized that it is necessary to explore. So this nostalgia resulted in the genesis of the idea of Killa while I was still at the Ftii.

Pushpendra Singh’s debut feature Lajwanti (The Honour Keeper), based on the story by late Rajasthani author Vijaydan Detha, will have its world premiere in the Forum section of the Berlin International Film Festival on February 10. The actor-turned-director talks to DearCinema about the journey of Lajwanti:
Lajwanti premieres at Berlinale Forum
You are an Ftii trained actor. You have worked as an actor for Amit Dutta (Aadmi Ki Aurat aur Anya Kahaniya) and later assisted him (Nainsukh) and Anup Singh (Qissa) in their films. What led to this transition?
I think it was natural. An actor is constantly directing himself by giving choices while preparing for a role. Acting in films never happens in isolation. An actor has to be aware about how the camera is relating to him, how the shot is going to be edited or whether his tone is on the right note or not. I...

Lajwanti (The Honour Keeper) directed by Pushpendra Singh has been selected for the 44th edition of the Berlinale Forum, a section of the Berlin International Film Festival that showcases independent, artistic filmmaking with a disregard for convention. Berlinale Forum will screen twenty-eight world and eight international premieres this year.
Lajwanti was part of Market Recommendations at Nfdc Film Bazaar last year. Based on a folk tale set in the Thar desert by Rajasthani writer Vijaydan Detha, the film explores the inner struggles of a married woman to honour a dream and in that search find the higher meaning of love and freedom.
A trained actor from the Film and Television Institute of India (Ftii), Pushpendra Singh has acted in films like Amit Dutta’s Aadmi ki aurat aur anya kahaniya and Nainsukh. He has also assisted Dutta in Nainsukh and The Seventh Walk. Lajwanti marks his feature debut after recently assisting Anup Singh on Qissa.
